2014 MISAOS - THE VOTENING
Posts
Getting a Misao is just a nice way of acknowledging your good work. Despite nothing appearing on the gamepage stating you won but I think you get an achievement & that ever so addictive MS upgrade.
But yeah, Oneshot all the way. Also I like how Blackmoon Prophecy snuck in there, the original not its sequel which is very eligible & deserves some love.

Alright. So I'm going to speak my word here. HOME really isn't deserving of the interface award. It doesn't have any custom menu scripts. The only reason I think anyone would ever dare vote for it is because of the icons used for items. I've done CMS before but I felt like HOME didn't really need one because it would've separated itself from OFF in a manner.
HOME has votes for the most promising demo because many people must've voted for it while it was in the demo stage. I think the runner up should win in that category and HOME should be omitted from winning that award. That or HOME should manually be removed from the voting board for that category if possible.
I guess interface design isn't a popular category and generally fans of a game are just going to vote in every category of said subject and that's how HOME got that many votes for interface design.
Honestly Dreaming Mary should win that one in a land slide. :/
If I'm going to be brutally honest. The only Misao I could see HOME worthy of winning would be the Dungeon/Puzzle award, and the Soundtrack award.
As for characters. I love HOME's characters because I made many of them myself, however I feel like Oneshot's characters have a bit more life to them. There's a charm to their dialogue.
Pretty happy that Dreaming Mary will win the Best Graphics & Artwork Nominations.
I fully believe it deserves it.

Well, this is just the number of nominations in each category, the votes are still to come. But you should still be glad that OFF will probably get some awards. It's not like the game is popular for nothing, it must be quite a great game if it has that following, and the reviews are fairly positive.
Actually, oddly enough, though OFF was added to the site this year and thus is eligible for Misaos, it's not in the running for them. XD
Sorry, I found that kinda funny. Same with Witch's House and another of those more popular games. They were added to the site this year, would have been in the running for a Misao but didn't even get nominated. I just find it funny that the fangame of OFF got nominated when OFF didn't. XD

I think people didn't nominate them because they knew they'd been added as part of the 'save the classics' programme so most people know they aren't a 2014 year game.
But yes it is interesting that technical eligibility didn't come into the equation.

Off isn't from 2014 anyway. It says on the wiki it was made in 2008.
Unless I'm misunderstanding the rules of the Misaos - does a game have to just be added to this site for it to be eligible, or released overall in that year?

The rule is basically that it has to be made that year (or see a release of some kind - we've had some games updated in the past that were eligible again due to that). That said, the way the site allows for nominations is by checking when the last download was added to the site, I believe, which means that they could have been nominated.
And who's to say an update wasn't made on the games before being added here - we don't know because they were basically a dump for more linkage/exposure.
As for the classics, I think if any of them had been nominated we would have pointed out that they were classics and thus not allowed but the system would have still let them through because there's no way for it to have known that they wouldn't be allowed.

Oh well. Can't be helped in the end. HOME was fun to work on, I'll say that much.

... the misaos are kind of a lightweight nonserious thing...

They feel like the Oscars sometimes though.
Exactly! XD
I don't think any awards ceremony can be approached in a way that is perfectly fair without completely dissolving into obscurity. The frustrated conversations about who should win what, and what is unfair, and how it can be fixed next time, is/are the bread and butter of the appeal of awards. The Oscars, in all of its stupidity, thrives on all of its stupidity.
I set some votes for now, just in case. I need to play It Moves and Soul Sunder.
Just getting the data for what to choose is worth the contest. Even if I don't agree that a game should be in Category X, the thoughts I have about it are great game design thoughts that I can take with me after the fact. So this is turning out to be pretty cool.

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

Having witnessed secondhand the nightmare of a juried game contest, I can confidently say that no way in hell do we need a more fair version of the Misaos. Not unless we can make a team of game-judging robots to do it for us.
I think a better plan is just to stick with reviews and maybe some end-of-year discussions. Rather than, say, awards, I'd be more interested in seeing discussion topics where people suggest games for various superlative categories and offer an explanation of why they think X game is the best for reals. (This would also weed out the "I am a fan of this game and only care about promoting it I don't even go to this site" crowd.)
But then "I won X award" is a lot more pithy than "People in the 'Best Interface' thread generally agreed that my game was pretty great but some other people thought this one here was better and no consensus was reached."

It's been pointed out, but Lost Story's inclusion in the best game category seems suspect to me. For one, it only had a download up for a short time, and the demo was loaded with problems. And then the creator was banned for using multiple sock-puppet accounts for self-promotion.

I love how a good number of the "most promising demos" are already completed, while another (Eternal Odyssey) no longer even has a gamepage on the site.

I definitely find this category as the most promising.
the Most Promising Demo made a lot of sense back in the era of RM games never ever being finished...

We still have a few of those, but a lot less I'd say ;)
Every game that gets finished is an insult to the spirit of true RPG Making.
Hell, every game that even releases a demo after more than one month of screenshot hype is blasphemy. In proper RM contests, we used to have a category for the Best Screenshots and Best Title Screen.
