WHAT DOES RPGMAKER.NET THINK OF ANIME?
Posts
Just figured I'd ask since RPG fans usually like anime. My favorite anime is Ashita no Joe and my least favorite is Code Geass. Favorite manga is Lone Wolf and Cub.
I'm big on One Piece when it comes to manga (the anime, not as much lately).
There's Log Horizon, Toppa Tengen Gurren Laggan, Monster, Ouran High School Host Club and Skip Beat! which are all good anime.

I used to watch a ton of anime. Not as much these days, though I still love the style and occasionally check stuff out.

I don't plan to touch the One Piece anime but one day I will read the manga. Monster was an anime though that I thought was fantastic. I usual avoid things that are super moe though.
I stopped watching anime in my early teens. I loved Pokémon and Card Captor Sakura.
I also liked Blue Submarine No. 6 when I was a kid, strangely.

Well, rpgmaker.net has had a number of anime topics that are pretty popular, so yep, there are definitely fans of anime here, including me :)
I'm more of a sucker for romance anime, though. So, to name a few that I love:
- Bakuman
- Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)
- Chihayafuru
- White Album 2

Best romance anime is Maison Ikkoku just throwing that out there lol.
Fruits Basket is insanely cute, too. I like a good mix of all genres. Bar Mecha. The only Mecha anime I can handle is TTGL but that's because it's so fucking awesome I ain't even joking this anime omg if you haven't seen it go watch now it's amazing you don't know just how great it is omg tears and laughter and pain and joy and go watch that shit one of the best anime I have ever fucking seen.
Also, Scrapped Princess was pretty cool. Princess the whole world wants to kill, trying to solve the mystery of her birth and stay alive at the same time. Supported by only her brother and sister and a handful of other characters we meet along the way. The story is nice and it gets really interesting. That ending, though... hnnng~
Solty Rei is another great anime that isn't heard of much. It's about a mysterious girl found by a grieving father who is a detective. She saves his life and he takes her in grudgingly. Set in a futuristic world, it's really interesting and there's a lot of pieces that are just so great. It made me cry. But then so did Scrapped Princess, TTGL and One Piece, so... ^.^;
"Lastly I want to talk about ecchi. Now, anime gets a bad rap for being perverted and yeah, I see where a lot of that comes from. More often than not when I do an anime round-up I’ll have at least one section about this subject because unless the story is incredibly engrossing, it’s something I notice a lot. In Solty Rei there is perversion but it’s handled a bit oddly than in usual anime. Very much so.
For one, the female half of the cast have to be the cleanest anime characters known to man. Nearly every episode had at least one shot of a woman in the shower or bath. I am not joking. Granted, all necessary bits are covered but still! Another thing is the close-ups of Solty’s butt. Good lord, did they love to show her ass off (and the asses of a few other characters who wore tight-fitting spandex). What is odd, though, is that despite the huge amount of chances for panty shots (seriously, if it’s not spandex it’s short skirts or ruffled out skirts that fly all over the place) there are none in the show. Not a one that I managed to glimpse. It was an odd contrast - the willingness to show off the female form quite a lot, but the reluctance to actually show panty shots, despite the huge amount of chances to do so. Reminds me a bit of the last anime I watched in that regard."
Also, Shangri-La is a wonderful experience with amazing characters and you should all go watch that shit. Seriously. Vengeful pink-haired guerrilla girl with her cross-dressing best buddy and other crazy cast, fighting against a mega corporation in a junked-out post-apocalyptic Japan where people are being killed by Mother Nature? Oh, and the whole 'destined one' being flipped on its head and then some? Add in an amazing cast of women - it's a fucking awesome story. I mean, it manages to cover every base - tragedy, war, comedy, ecchi (a little ;p ), sci-fi, hacking, megapowers, trading, explosions, guerrilla warfare, pretty pink girl kicking all kinds of ass, destiny, destiny not being set in stone, pretty graphics... It doesn't get enough love. Please, go watch this anime. It's 24 episodes but I legit watched in within a day because of how great it is. I couldn't stop watching. It's one of those anime where you can never guess what is going to happen next and the characters are some of the best I've seen in an anime in a very, very long time.
Oh, almost forgot Michiko to Hatchin. Escaped convict mother kidnaps the daughter of her ex-lover and they go on a road trip together, searching for the man that links them together. This anime is just so great. The animation is lovely, the main character is a sexy, bad-ass woman of colour. They constantly change clothes, for gods' sake. There's a lot of love put in to this anime. It's from the creators of Cowboy Bebop. Yeah, I bet you never heard of this anime in conjunction with that one, but honestly, it's so good.

I was going to try and explain why I dislike anime/manga so much on the whole, but I can't figure out a way to do it without seeming like a humongous asshat, so I'll forget about it.
The best way to sum it up: I grew out of anime, for the most part. I would much rather watch a good movie or documentary.
Actually, most of the anime I partake in nowadays comes in the form of movies. Perhaps it's because the West pretty much gave up on 2D animated movies, so it's just nice to see that you can still find people who respect the artform. The only other anime I watch is One Piece, and this has only started as of late- I think it's mostly out of an interest in seeing how the manga transitions into an episodic show.
As you may have guessed I read One Piece. Besides having gone through Trigun Maximum, this is the only manga I read. It's strange to me how well it clicked in my head, since I don't read comics either. It's just this one thing.

Maybe I can rec you stuff since you sound like you might be having the same issues I once did. I don't watch a lot of anime movies really I'd prefer live action classics like Seven Samurai, The Godfather, A clockwork Orange and Brazil or a Ralph Bakshi cartoon movie. I think a lot of modern anime and manga suffer from being stereotypical bullshit full of teen heroes and can service its really depressing. I consider Code Geass my least favorite anime ever because it represents everything I think is wrong with the genre. A good majority of anime is garbage but when you find gems like Kaiba its a great.
So just saying even as an anime fan I have a feeling your thoughts you rather not express are justified lol.

That last one doesn't it take place in Brazil? If its what I'm thinking of I've been meaning to watch that.
Also just gonna say Xabungle > TTGL
Probably because Oda takes care to craft the story not only for young readers but also for his older ones - as he said, the kids that started reading One Piece when it began are now adults (17 years of One Piece already!) and he writes as much for them as he does for those new to the series. He takes into consideration the adult audience and instead of just focussing on young readers, write to retain his audience, which is something a lot of mangaka forget about.
He also writes in a way that covers all genres and emotions in a story. You'll be smiling one moment, then crying the next (Enies Lobby fucked me up so much) and the continuity is really great. So many characters who are all so likeable and have their own motives... Someone else said it best when they said that One Piece is an adult manga written so a child could understand it.
/me hugs One Piece to chest
I'm not ashamed to admit that one of my life goals is to see the end of One Piece.
@Tago: Yeah, that's the one. Well, it's not really based in Brazil as it is that the story takes place in a world with a country like Brazil. Or takes a lot of inspiration from the country in any case. It also has an awesome police woman who rocks the best afro.
And I might check out Xabungle. I'm more into characters and story over giant ass mecha, which is why I liked TTGL so much - the characters and plot really appealed to me. The galaxy-throwing mecha was a bonus I never counted on. XD
Sentou Mecha Xabungle, correct? I'll sample an episode or two, but it doesn't really look like my cuppa tea. Like I said, characters and story over mecha and fighting.

Xabu gle is characters and story over fighting and mecha or really both. If you want characters and story I suggest Ashita no Joe which has character development out the ass. Also takes the best elements of Rocky and Raging Bull even though it came before both.
Hajime No Ippo made me start boxing. Started watching it again recently after downloading every Mike Tyson fight. Fun fact: Ippo was, supposedly, partially based on Mike Tyson.
Just watched some .hack mini series on netflix recently, it was okay. 3 eps. I was surprised to see subbed anime on Netflix, pleasently surprised.
DBZ will always be my favorite because it was the first one I ever saw. Your first love is always the strongest. Then Death Note, then maybe like...Gantz or Log Horizon next.

+1 Scrapped Princess. That was one of the first few anime that I watched many years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is.
And Maison Ikkoku...wow that's a pretty old anime (not as old as Ashita no Joe, though). I have watched just the 1st episode so far, but don't feel like watching through 96 episodes at the moment ~ ~
Speaking of long anime, the only two long anime I really devoted to watching through are Bleach and Fairy Tail. Naruto seems cliched to me, and One Piece...well, haven't really gotten around to watching it, and to catch up to its current 677th episode would be arduous for me...
Oh, and anyone who loves TTGL should definitely check out Kill la Kill, since the director and writer of Kill la Kill are the same people behind TTGL.

Actually I don't as strongly love the anime from my childhood as classics I discovered later on. If you like Hajime no Ippo watch Ashita no Joe. Its the father of anime and boxing manga though its a lot darker than Hajime no ippo. Characters are more unique though and the relationships between them are more fleshed out IMO. That said Joe is an asshole in early episodes and not immediately likable but that makes it even greater experience watching him grow into a better person and how his evolution effects those around him.

Oh I have no plans to watch through fairy tale and Bleach. I just don't think theyed be good enough to devote that kinda time for. I'll try the One Piece manga since I read manga faster paced than watch anime plus its actually supposed to be good.
I tried Bleach but had to drop it after the Aizen arc. It just repeated itself so much. It's a pity because it had a lot of great character designs, interesting plot ideas and hook and started off so well.
As for Fairy Tale, it's a poor man's One Piece with more fanservice than you can shake a stick at. I also tried watching it for a while but the arcs kept repeating themselves and I got sick of the 'POWER OF FRIENDSHIP' motif they kept trying to shove down your throat. Then what was done to Erza just made me rage quit. You should never treat your characters like that. It was just the straw that broke the camel's back.
Another good one is Great Teacher Onizuka. I'm about to go watch it again. ^.^
One of these days I'll actually get around to watching Cowboy Bebop and Shingeki no Kyojin. XD
orz
Oh, and Revolutionary Girl Utena is also a good watch. The filler is hilarious so you don't feel bored watching it. (insert random animal stampede here)

Well Pizza, I'm with you to a degree. Although I still love both anime and manga as forms of media ..
But the majority of shows, their impact and their hardcore followers alienate me. It caters to an audience that tries to hide their flaws and bask in acceptance without resistance.
Yet I know that there is more to it and that it doesn't need to mean a thing.
Now anyways, as for favorite series ..
I prefer manga overall, but whatever.
Paranoia Agent is definitely my favorite. It is slighty surreal, but the problems and characters are incredibly realistic and touching. It has a wonderful animation style and a lovely moral.
It's also directed by Satoshi Kon who did the totally awesome movie Paprika.
Black Rock Shooter. It mixes nice action scenes with a focus on relationships - I quite liked the metaphors and the lessons you could take from it. The visuals of "the other worlds" are incredibly strong.
Its creation process is hilarious as well
Baccano!. A whole package of madness, violence and jokes. It has a cast of intriguing characters and most important of all - it is a series where all characters play their part and have their own story and role. You could make countless stories out of it. Great jazzy soundtrack.
It starts out very confusing, but gets clearer and clearer the further you watch.
Texhnolyze. This is a beautiful piece .. but it isn't fun. It can be exhausting and slightly depressing, but it is still beautiful in everything it does. The depiction of humanity is cruelly fitting. If humanity destroys itself, then it does it like this.
Gintama. The only overly-long series I really enjoy - some episodes inbetween are awful, but Gintama is generally a totally ridiculous, but clever parody of anything. After you've watched Gintama, you will find yourself laughing to the weirdest occasions.
But what's particularily impressive is the adaption of the edo period as well as the sheer prowess of genre-crossing. There are serious blocks inbetween where the action, atmosphere, romance and feels are usually better than in their respective counterparts.
It's on edge - love it or find it boring.
