Wow, I'm honored that we were able to win GotY alone O: Thanks to everyone who voted for your support!

I mean, sure, OFF is great but it uses the 2k/3 default menu/battle system. >.<;
As does OneShot. Neither should have been up for grabs for the Interface Design.
I don't know... OneShot had those little pop-ups that asked you questions while in-game to give you the illusion that the game is actually talking to you. Aside from that, it also threw files on your computer to ensure that you could only play once, so that's thinking outside the box (for better or for worse).

However, I'm happy to see some Dreaming Mary up there.

Yeah, but in comparison to the tons of other better interfaces out there this year? Not exactly a contender.
I'm pretty disappointed that The Heart Pumps Clay was so low in the Characters category. I detect a lack of people playing the game!

But it's alright, because I found that if I mentally disqualify the votes of people I don't think deserved to vote, all of my nominations actually won.

Congratulations, everyone(shot)!

I'm so happy for you and Nightmargin! :3
I can't believe we tied for best characters. Cats ftw.
Also, yeah. HOME is no longer a demo. Should be removed >_<

So another year, another Misao sweeping. Seriously, we really need to start talking about implementing some necessary changes to the voting / nominating system for next year’s Misaos, otherwise I fear that this will be an ongoing, continuing trend for even more years to come that will just continue to result in p**sing more people off.

I don’t mind a single entry winning pretty much everything if it truly deserves to do so – and I’m not saying that Oneshot doesn’t deserve some of the awards that it ended up winning – but almost all of them, including Technical Prowess or even Best Characters!? I mean, it’s tough for me to get mad about it, because Oneshot was one of the best games that I played all last year, and I’m glad that even Dreaming Mary got a couple of Misaos too, but – come on, there are so many other finer choices out there!!! It just makes me overall very sad.

I mean, it just sucks to see such wonderful other gems released this year, like Enelysion, It Moves, Luxaren Allure and even Pocket Quest get nothing but a “thanks for just being here” and just toss them out with all the leftovers at a dinner party for all the rats and homeless people to go eat afterwards. At least last year I felt that the Misaos were going in the right direction, as we had five different games pick up multiple different awards. This year it was just four.

Oh well… Congratulations Oneshot, Dreaming Mary, HOME (that I have yet to play as of yet) and Stray Cat Crossing for picking up this year’s Misaos. Hold those up high, my friends, for that it is something that most people, such as myself, will never reach. :)

That would require either judges who are willing to sit down and play every single game listed.
OR
Have a system that allows a game to only be eligible to win one Misao. If it gets nominated for multiple ones, the category that has the most votes for it is the category it would win the award in, and all other categories would be open to other projects.

yea I took a gander at the votes, it would've been a sweep for one game or another across most categories anyway, no matter how you cut it.

I'm guessing this is a longstanding problem and I'm also guessing that restrictions for "no more than one category per game" has been suggested before but never got implemented?

I think having a small team of selected officials, a Misao Committee, should decide the winners of each category after the nomination period closes and then picks out the top 3 in each particular category. So basically the nomination process would basically remain the same like before, with users nominating their favorite games, and what not, and then it just comes down to the Misao Committee at the end on deciding on what game should win and what not. This way the people elected to the Misao Committee wouldn’t have to basically play EVERY game that was released that year, just the ones that got nominated the most.

Also, we should change the rules a little about user’s eligibility when it comes to nominating a game to make things a bit more fair and cut down on any shady looking activity. These users have to have had their account open for more than 3 months and at least have more than 50 makerscore to allow eligibility for nominating any games for any Misaos.

Sounds fair to me.
We did think of a 3 game rule where a game could only be nominated for three topics tops. The thing is coming up with a way for it to be automated within the site.

That was most of the issues really. And not coming up with a definite plan. ^.^;

As to the above? Not to me. There are people who have been on the site for a long time and have 0 MS because they just don't bother contributing, yet play a lot of games. Also, it's not fair to lock people out from voting just because they aren't from RMN. We're not an exclusive site, guys. Granted, it is frustrating to see a crowd of people descend and vote but then leave. Maybe some stay, maybe they feel upset to hear that people think their votes shouldn't count.

I mean, if we're really down for excluding, we should only allow votes that are tied to a download from the game in question.

Sounds fair to me.

Except it still wouldn't fix problem where the same 3 games might end up on top of the nominations list for every category.

The user eligibility thing makes sense to an extent (to weed out the votebots and sockpuppet accounts) Though I remember reading how people were mostly concerned about the game's popularity outside the site, which is a fair concern.
HOWEVER, I have a feeling some games might've got nominated and voted so much because they got the most exposure from simply being "buzzing" and being on the front page of this site all the time (and the reason why they're buzzing all the time is because they're trapped in a loop of neverending exposure. I'm looking at 1-2 game in particular that hasn't left that position for at least 8 months, if not more. Those games would probably seem like the face of the site for some people at this point.)

So there /is/ the glaring issue of heavy internal bias, and banning outside voters without changing the front page popularity system would all but guarantee the same pattern of one game winning everything forever. It's just a question of which game would get that privilege.

The download-vote idea sounds nice in theory! But I think it might fall flat cuz it would only apply to people planning to play it during misaos season and locks out the people who's played and enjoyed the game earlier in the year (unless you wanna keep nominations open all year, haha)

I wonder if there can be a gamejolt-like system where like, games on the site can have features synced with user accounts?

Nominations are available all year. You can nominate a game anytime after the voting period for the previous year, which basically means it's open now again (or will be soon) for any game that has had a download added since January 1, and that nomination period stays open until December 31st. We use the term Misao season very loosely, it's more 'the time of year when Kentona/Liberty/Shinan/GRS or someone else on the team reminds us to nominate something we've played'. Not when things we've played become available for nominations. It's only voting that has a short time period, generally around 2-3 weeks.

OOOOOoh ok, so it was always there just not advertised.
Can you nominate a game from the game's page itself? I don't remember seeing a nomination button or anything. I know there's a nomination page off to the side on the user profile/personal access page but.

Another idea can be to require a short blurb on why someone chose a particular game to nominate, and they'll have to be specific enough? For example something like "I think Painted Heart should be nominated for the best graphics category with its really cool watercolor aesthetic." and not "this games great".

That's the way you nominate, in the top bar on the main gamepage is review/playlist/subscribe/nominate. You'll see on Oneshot it's greyed out now, so no-one can nominate your game anymore. That's because it hasn't been re-enabled for the 2015 year yet, but yours will stay grey anyway because it's a 2014 game not a 2015 and is no longer eligible for nominations.

It's okay; I gave myself the Misao for most handsome man. It's been nice having you in my corner, by the way--I think half of my downloads are from you, Unity, and Red Nova mentioning The Heart Pumps Clay every once in a while.

Oneshot was probably my favorite game this year, so if anything were to sweep, I'm glad it was it. It probably should have only won a few categories, but this is less disappointing than when the atomic Pom dropped.

Personally I think everybody should be able to nominate anything they like as long as they fall within the eligible nomination period, which the system handles anyway. I just think that nominations should run from February to December, January is reserved as the first week for the vetting process, i.e. games with less than X number of nominations are removed (in a community of thousands there should be a sensible minimum nominations number) games that are completed are removed from the Demo category (that may have been demos when they were nominated so it is perfectly legitimate for them to be nominated there) games without a download are removed (they may have had one once, but it has been removed by the dev for numerous reasons during the course of the year), then the last 2-3 weeks of Jan are for the voting period, and the nominations kick in again in February.

In regard to clean-sweeps, well they happen in the Oscars, Globes and BAFTA's so I don't see that much of an issue here, but if there is a feeling that the approbation should be shared than make it a three category rule and make the consequences that the game will be restricted to the first three categories it has nominations in, since the coveted GOTY is the last category the chances of a game getting that as one of it's three will be slim if it's been blitzed in all the other categories by fly-by-nighters. I don't think it's the best solution, but unless we are willing to hand over the voting to a committee rather than allowing the community to vote it may be a way to distribute kudos more evenly.

The upshot of that is that games that have a lot of external buzz will never win GOTY however and I'm pretty sure that isn't equitable either. I think we just have to accept that the Misaos are in some respects a popularity contest.

Have a system that allows a game to only be eligible to win one Misao. If it gets nominated for multiple ones, the category that has the most votes for it is the category it would win the award in, and all other categories would be open to other projects.

Actually that would be a good compromise, but it would have to be more than one category, at minimum two, since most games that get GOTY get it because they excel in some of the areas covered by the other categories so it would be good to be able to trace what other areas they shine in as an indication as to what works for the playing public. That would be of interest to devs I would imagine.

Oh you mean users like CAVE_DOG_IS_BACK or even someone like mawk who don’t really contribute anything in terms of games, reviews and the like but have just been posting on the forums? Yeah, I don’t mind those guys being eligible, because their accounts were made such a long time ago and they have been around for such a long time. I guess I meant to say that in order to be eligible to nominate something that you either need to have more than 50 makerscore OR have an account that is more than three months old. Whether they post on the forums a lot or not is just fine, as long as they meet either requirement, they’re both good in my books.

Well…it kind is... I mean, it’s like me trying to vote for a Australian Prime Minster yet I live in Canada and don’t know the first thing about either candidate…or even Australian politics in general. You wouldn’t want someone like that voting, would you?

(Also, I thought that we were an exclusive club.)

Ah yes, the ever-popular, brilliant “buzzing system” that seems like 80% of time when you look at the front page you question to yourself, “Why is this game still there?” I definitely agree with you that it has a major impact on year’s end when it comes down to nominating and voting for games, because a lot of people tend to go for those games in general because they were always on the front page all the time and were seen as the most popular.

Maybe how buzz is generated needs some additional fine-tweaking? I know that buzz is usually generated by stuff like comments, reviews and such, but perhaps it needs some more additional parameters added to it, especially in regards to a game being stagnant for too long. Too often I’ll see a game that’s been buzzing for a long time but have had no new comments or anything submitted for months but it’s still there, right at the top, like it freakin’ owns the place. That doesn't seem right to me.
