2014 MISAOS - THE RESULTATIONS
Posts
@Sailerius is right. The problem is that because this is a democratic process, most people don't play minorly appreciated games just by default. So in a democracy, the option with the most exposure has a better chance at winning. It's not that RMN doesn't play that many games. Many dedicated users play many games within the site. nhubi plays a ton of games, so in my mind, her opinion should matter more. I played about 60 or so RMN games from this year, which is OK. But as the others have said, appointing a committee to either determine the nominations or the winners would be a good one. That said, the Misaos have always been vote-based to my knowledge, so maybe it would suffice to create a "critic's choice" awards comprised of a committee of renowned developers, reviewers, moderators and active users/players on the site. Not sure how the committee would be chosen though, but I'd say grab those who have 10 reviews or more, those who have at least one completed game, or those who volunteer to be part of the committee and have a true and proven record of playing many games and being reliable on the site.
There's a problem with that though Sailerius, people like Mawk & Cave Dog have 0 MS but plenty of game playing experience.
Maybe a way around that is a tiny (i.e. 1 MS) achievement for being a member of RMN for a year, or perhaps for making 1000 comments (the assumption being that at least a few of those are going to be on games or about games, not just Mafia :)).
I can understand, and indeed agree with, Kentona's basic revulsion to restrictions, RMN is inclusive, not exclusive, so any voting/nominating criteria should reflect that.

True. Which is why something like a separate Critics Choice Awards thing would work well ;) as the more exclusive, snobby cousin of the Misaos.

I would suggest then having some sort of trivial event in October or November or something that makes it dead simple to get 1 MS, which heads off any accounts that might be registered just to vote come December. Or, heck, do it in the summer.
The RMN Plays event that Kentona ran was perfect for that, each letter was worth 1 or 2 MS, and the point was to comment on games, specifically the Misao possible games. I think if that was an annual event (though revamping that achievement system) that should cover that eventuality.

Thing is, people complaining in the topic about having not played the games had three weeks to play the games! And yes, that was pointed out to them. They didn't play the fucking games. >.<;
I personally don't have much free time. I'm working full time now and what free time I do have isn't going to be allocated to playing RMN games anymore. I tried that in my topic xD and found that most RMN don't appeal to me(That reminds me I still owe somebody something). Most of the games on the list didn't appeal to me. I did play a little bit of Oneshot but that didn't last long.
Plus, if I don't feel a game deserves to win in that category I'm less likely to vote for it even if it's the only one in the list I played. I have a problem voting for something simply because it's the only one I played.
When I first joined RMN the Misaos seemed kinda important and worthwhile. I don't feel that way anymore. So I don't feel I should put myself out for someone else's marginal benefit. Spending my precious time being bored so I can vote in this. I'll just stick to making jabs about them and reminding everyone that I don't play games :3
But that's just me. And I have the new Smash Bros so...yeah. It's my second job now. I'm going to have Smash withdrawals when I do game jam stuff.
If you take a closer look at the results, It's easily visible it's not that dysfunctional and there weren't too many tumblr lovers (Home got only seven votes in GOTY section). As i stated before problematic are categories where voters don't really know on what basis they should nominate and vote. The good example is Technical Prowess where OneShot amassed astonishing 60 votes and the second was game made with Unity (It's Anaryu's game, so it's probably technical gem).
I think changes Kentona suggested are legit and I don't agree on restriction. I want to be able to nominate game I haven't played even It's unlikely I'll ever do so. In case I nominated my shitty game for graphics award and it were looking horrible and some of my tumblr friends did the same, It would make complete sense to delete it from the list later and not bother us during voting procedure.
On the other hand Misaos are people's choice and any restrictions from the the establishment are against theirs nature. I'm for this second branch of awards where committee of renowned critics, developers and artists would make it's official selection.

I mean. Dreaming Mary was also broadcasted on tumblr.
The creator of said game also has one.
As do the creators of Oneshot.
Oneshot itself has a HUGE following on Tumblr.
I know not many people heard of HOME on here, but HOME's popularity comes from the cult following of OFF, not really just tumblr.
ManlyBadassHero a Youtube LPer also played both
Dreaming Mary & Oneshot
Dreaming Mary clocks in at 109,003 views.
Oneshot clocks in at a mere 24,312 views.
What am I getting at?
No matter what, there's always going to be outside influences on voting contests like this. RPG Maker.net isn't a vacuum outside of the internet.

Why? I'm serious why would you nominate something you've never played?

I wouldn't I just want to have the choice. I nominated games I played myself in all categories but I can imagine someone to nominate something as best graphics just for the look of the screenshots.
And the voting is what really matters.
author=Cap_HWell that's just depressing.

author=MerlandeseThat sounds like a Wisao. Oh, wait we're not meant to mention that word in threads that Liberty reads.
Best Game I Didn't Play nominations.
I think that leaving the Misaos as a popularity contest - and framing it as such - isn't actually that big of a deal, as long as we don't take it as some holy judgement of "best game". We all know isn't directly correlated to quality (especially when the winners have ~30 votes), but popularity contests can be a fun way for people to participate and a laid-back, silly contest in general, and get some games more notice.
If we're trying to promote games of the best "quality" (quality being a very tricky word), I'd leave the Misaos as they are and focus on the other systems RMN already has in place for it - the Featured Games, Buzzing Games, New and Notable and soforth. Having one popularity contest a year is kinda fun, especially when the rest of the year we already focus on more discerned judgement.
If people were really interested in a "best game of the year" contest, we'd could do a Oscar-like contest alongside the Misaos, where panels of voters played the nominations for each category. Well-known designers play the design nominees, artists the art nominees, etc... Of course, because of our community's size, it might be tricky to find voters who aren't also participating in a category, and there's bound to be claims of bias and favoritism, and I already feel bad for suggesting more work to everyone on the staff...

you should feel bad!
also, I would expect this to be a cabal separate from the staff (though it could include a staff member or two if they wanted to do it).
just don't forget the lessons learned from the last time I tried organizing something like that...*
*yes I have been here forever and done everything. stop pointing it out.

That the community is full of dicks sometimes, especially when an official group make a decision like 'best games' instead of it being popularity-born. People will blame the system if a game they don't like gets thrown in the top. We had a few very loud assholes in the IGMC who hated the top picks there (and even went so far as to accuse the judges of being A - biased towards games that were made in Ace, B - being biased towards games that used RM assets, C - being biased towards games that didn't look as good as game x, y or z... and the like).
People are always going to complain and blame someone/thing though. I say we give it another shot next time. Maybe get some of this years' most prolific reviewers in the panel, and have the stipulation that most of the games have to have been played by the panel.

I'm curious: What were the lessons learned? Be careful what you name your awards?
Yes, that is lesson #1. Also, lesson #2 is that the community is full of dicks sometimes. #3 is letting the judges hammer out a top 10 themselves and not use some convoluted point scoring system to sort a list. and maybe not even have a ranking.
The following year (or maybe it was a year after?) what I did was get a few of the contributors at the time and get them to pick their top 2 or 4 or so games from that year and write a blurb about them. I am not sure where that topic is now (I must not have made an article for it).
Yeah, you're never going to please everyone, and people can get really upset over that. Just as a participant in IGMC, I saw a lot of sad, upset people, often for reasons that were kinda silly.
I will say, that the games recommended on the Unofficial Official Misaos Thread were almost all really good, and while I didn't play all of them (I still played more than half XD), the ones I did play held up fantastically. So to anyone who made a game that got recommended in that thread, I'd like to throw confetti in the air above you and declare you the winner of "Yay You Made An Awesome Game That People Liked" award!
That actually sounds like a really good alternative! Something like that could work well, I think.

I like both of those ideas! The little blurb thing would be really cool :) but I also like a judging panel. Or both! No matter what you do you're gonna get people who are upset at the winners, claims of bias, and whatnot. I guess you just gotta expect it and ignore it (as best as possible) and make sure everyone who ends up judging or helping or participating knows what might happen >_>
If we do another panel-based game of the year award show, I think we should name it The Kentonas.
