Honestly the overly fancy art style of XP and the character sprites of VX Ace are what keeps me from really wanting to use said programs.

This doesn't make sense. Neither of the things you mentioned are more than options in both engines, if not every engine. HOME/OFF are prime examples of NOT using default assets, aren't they? So how can that be a deterrent?

Making 16x tilesets and such for VX Ace and XP is a pain. Same with the character set resources. Also, the default combat system of both VX and XP are hideous and CBS can be rather frustrating and complicated to get working properly.

Just not fond of them.

It's the resolution rather than the assets themselves. In a tile-and-pixel-art based engine, low resolution graphics tend to look nicer.
I wish there's an option in the engine to scale everything 2x but in the meantime a script will have to do.

Double the size = fits Ace. Same with character sets. The DBS for Ace is the same as 2k's and one of the options for 2k3... and isn't broken like 2k3s is. There's a literal fuck-ton of scripts that allow for side-view battles that are just plug n play too. And another fuckton that change the DBS.

The excuses to use superior RM tech never made any sense to me. It's not hard to make the switch between low rez/high rez pixel art, from personal experience having done so I can say that it's extremely fun to have all that extra room and infinite colour/transparency support. You're doing nothing but improving your own skill by pixeling in different resolutions/styles/palettes/etc anyways.

And in the event that you simply can't pixel twice as large? Buy a program like PyxelEdit- it has the capability to cleanly scale graphics 2x and above. I'm sure there are other programs out there that can do this, since it doesn't seem like super advanced wizardry. You could upsize in paint if you felt like it by zooming and print screening, if you don't mind working through pains in your ass.

Fuck, you can just pixel with a 2x2 brush. Boom. Half the resolution.

Perhaps I come off sounding a bit elitist or condescending, but this is how I react when people hold on to barely operational 12 year old technology like it's some sort of forgotten gem. I wish more people would abandon it, since 2k3 games are pretty much unplayable cause of that trashy engine. Bleh.
You can double it in paint by selecting it with the area tool and clicking the resize option. Double one of the numbers and BAM 2x. I also think Ace is lovely, but I started with Ace so I'm probably biased.
This is super off-topic, but I'm going to keep risking it. XD

Both my games Social Caterpillar and the contest version of Last Word use that 2x2 pixel resolution for the backdrops.

Example:

The style isn't like Oneshot or Home/Off, but I'm not seeing why the "style" of less resolution isn't possible in XP. And I'm not on the platform of a person who knows anything about the other engines; I don't use 2k3 and I've never used VX. It just seems to me that whether it was Unity or Construct 2 or XP, you could make the graphics look just as big-pixel-y as you want.

EDIT: Does it have to do with the 640x480 resolution?

It's not about functions. Restrictions are what make these games so good and often better polished. You have to put another amount of effort to make game good in vx than in 2k3. Development has totally different flow.
I'm no 2k3 fanatic I just like the fact people are using prehistoric engines.
my next game will be in QBASIC and only runs on Windows 95
People don't like having to learn new stuff, even if it's basically the same stuff with a new skin.

and then after that I am going to make a 2k3 game and bravely use default systems. Not sure what I should call it though...

I love XP to be fair, I don't have the artistic finesse to keep up with the 32x style.
