2015 MISAOS - THE CATEGORIZATIONS
Posts
So we all know the current list of Misao categories:
Best Storytelling and Direction
Best Characters
Best Setting
Best Atmosphere
Best Graphics & Artwork
Best Sound & Music
Most Technical Prowess
Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design
Best Gameplay Mechanics
Best Interface Design
Most Promising Demo
Best Non-RPG
Game of the Year
What you may not know is that we used to have a wide variety of categories, because you used to be able to INVENT AND NOMINATE CATEGORIES for the Misaos, before any games were nominated. Which is how you would end up with categories like 'Most Egregious Butchering of the English Language' and 'Game Most Likely to Evolve Into a Shitty Webcomic' and really contributed to their wacky nature. I mean, just look at say the 2006 misaos http://rpgmaker.net/misaos/2006/
I am wanting to add a bit of the fun back in, and I am strongly considering adding in a few more esoteric awards to the 2015 misaos. And I'd like you to weigh in.
Would you like more categories, or would you prefer to leave them as is? How zany would you be willing to go? Do you have any category suggestions for next year? What about serious categories that should be included, that the current list doesn't cover? Would you like to see more awards for specific kinds of games (like horror or comedy or puzzle)?
FYI Here is where I first broached the subject that lead to us making a fixed defined list year to year: http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/1734/?post=27634#post27634 (has a compiled list of common categories).
I think that a few categories like this would be fun:
Best Game Title
Most Humourous Game
Most Horrific Game
Most Heartwrenching Game
Most Fun Game
"Lawsuit Waiting To Happen" Award - most non-chalant use of rips.
Game Most Likely To Turn into a Shitty Webcomic
Best Storytelling and Direction
Best Characters
Best Setting
Best Atmosphere
Best Graphics & Artwork
Best Sound & Music
Most Technical Prowess
Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design
Best Gameplay Mechanics
Best Interface Design

I would probably like to see the "Best Non-RPG" Category broken down into a few "Best of X Genre" categories, like Best Horror Game, Best Puzzle Game, etc. I think some more specific recognition for stuff like that would help, especially in terms of just giving credit where it's due.
I know it's not about the categories per se, but how about you can only nominate one game for a number of categories? So instead of having one for all, you have to decide on 3 or 4 categories it shines in.
That wouldn't make a common problem void, but at least open other categories (like interface) for other games.
Either way, I'd agree Pizza. There are quite a few games of all kinds of genre out there, would be neat to have some variety there.
There are some things I as a player find hard to judge, specifically technical prowess.

I made a cursory list based on the genre suggestion, and it's already pretty long. Is that the direction we want?
Most Goofy Game
Most Horrific Game
Most Adorable Game
Most Romantic Game
Most Puzzling Game
Most Depressing Game
Best Retro Oldschool Game
Best Fantasy Game
Best Futuristic Game
Best Action Game
Best Adventure Game

You could probably cut Goofy, Adorable, Depressing and "Retro Oldschool" out of that list since they really aren't genres in of themselves.
I guess we'd have to vote on what genres to include though, since VG genres are an issue nobody can really ever agree on.

Best use of RTP (Most RTP game award)
Vice game of the year (this one is more of the sociological study. If we gave people to choose the second place, would they vote for the same game as for the first place, would that make they overall selection more diverse?)
Best Non-RM game
I like Lawsuit waiting to happen award, it's so good candidate for the worst Misao award.

Most Original Villain Entries:ROFL!
The English Language (Phylomortis: Avant-Garde)
Anyway, I like this idea, but I don't think it'll solve some of the most glaring issues with the Misaos right now, but Nightmargin's categories stick out to me.
I have been wanting more zany back in the categories for years now. Good. I like this topic.
How about some break down of the different areas by which we judge games themselves?
Story/art/sound/gameplay
Best Male Lead
Best Female Lead

I agree about the RTP category. A very good idea.
This post reminds me, I always thought it'd be a good idea to have Gold, Silver and Bronze GOTY awards with achievements attached.
Hmm, I do like Lawsuit waiting to happen, and please please have Best/Worst Puns.
Also
Most irritating mini-game (or, where's the dynamite, I've broken my f$%&ing pickaxe again)
Most gratuitous display of nudity (or, who goes into battle in a loincloth/bikini?)
Most ridiculous keyboard layout (or, just how many hands do you think I've got?)
Most overuse of ellipses (or, this is why the ent-wives left)
Serious ones though
Developer of the year
Game Changer (for something that pushes boundaries, be they graphical, emotional, social etc)

Best Hero of the Realm
Best Monster Design (RooOOAAAarr)
Best Enemy Reaction Conditioning (AI)
Best Razzle Dazzle Tenor (Special Effects)
Best Title Screen (Look atta Pretty Colours)
Isn't there an easy way to check which genres other than RPG are most common?
That way you could create specific genre MISAOS for those (i.e.: Best Survival Horror, Best Adventure Game, etc) and keep the "Best Non-RPG" for the other ones.

It can't be just my age:(
How the hell will you guys/gals remember the games you played to be able to plug them into the 75 or more categories ???? :) hehe

We'll be trying to show off some of the better ones this year, give a bit more spotlight via discussions and podcasts and hopefully encourage people to vote more.

You come back to RMN and nominate them right after you play them, any time of the year! if you play a better game later that year, update your nomination.
