RUNE FACTORY 4 OR HARVEST MOON: A NEW BEGINNING?

I gave Sooz one of my old Harvest Moon games (Friends of Mineral Town for GBA) and hearing her talk about it has really got me in the mood to try a new Harvest Moon game.
Looking into it, it seems like Rune Factory 4 or Harvest Moon: A New Beginning might be just what I'm looking for. I was curious if anyone has played either game and could recommend one? Thanks! ^_^

I've played RF4, and it's pretty good. Not quite as good as RF3 but still very good compared to most games of the genre.
I don't know if you've played any Rune Factory games before, but they're a mash-up of RPG and farming/dating simulator. There's an over-arching story in them and they're all set in the same world, often referencing previous games and characters from them.
You can choose male or female (and later change to the other while dating someone of the opposite gender, meaning that you can legit be female dating female or male dating male - pity that the option is slightly hidden, but at least it's there) and make friends with the villagers while following the story, which is progressed at your pace. It can take years to do it in or as long as it takes you to grind up enough levels to take on the bosses in your path.
There are various dungeons, lots of stuff to collect and tons of shit to craft. You can't exactly purchase animals - you have to tame them - and different ones serve different purposes. You have cow-like ones that give milk and chicken-like ones that give eggs, but also wolf-like ones that drop teeth and cute little squirrel-types that give fur and so forth. Some don't drop anything but will join you in battle.
These animals' affections can be raised by general care-taking and gift-giving and what you give them affects their stats.
The townsfolk will also join you in battle if you become good enough friends with them. You can give them armour and weapons (though accidentally gifting a weaker weapon after giving them a stronger one will over-take the previous... as I found out when I gave Dylas a fishing rod over a weapon that had high luck and item drop chance as well as life steal. :< ) as well as the normal gifts that you can give to raise their affection. They will go up levels as they fight and sometimes they'll give you presents back.
Honestly, it's a pretty good game and the story itself is a bit touching, too.

I've only played Rune Factory 4, so I can't compare it to New Beginning. I do know that they're very different and would probably just boil down to personal preference rather than which one is better or worse.
Do you want to fight monsters in addition to raising crops? Then get Rune Factory 4. I can assure you that RF4 is a great game, and you won't be disappointed with it.
Personally, while I did enjoy Friends of Mineral Town, I have a hard time getting invested in a game that just plops you in and tells you to do whatever. At least with Rune Factory, I have context, an objective, and an overarching backstory that sets just the right framework for me to get invested as a player and motivated to do the activities. Unless New Beginning has something like that, I would recommend Rune Factory.
Again though, I would stress that neither is better than the other, and it mostly boils down to your preferences as a player.

From both of your comments, I'll probably go Rune Factory. I really enjoyed Rune Factory 3, so 4 is probably a safe bet. While I'm curious to see where the HM series has gone in recent years, having a fantasy twist on it is always fun, and it sounds like the latest one is no exception.
I absolutely love touching stories :D <3 And I'll have to remember that bit about not gifting them equipment that's worse than what they already have. That's not cool that they'll use the weaker one.
