WHAT APPEAL OF THE OPEN WORLD GOALESS GAMES?

I think I've got a game for that.
Edit: Also kentona, is it that you don't understand the appeal of such games, or that you don't agree with it? Because surely by now you've heard enough reasons why it is fun, but have just concluded that it's not fun for you. Could you understand why it could be fun for others? Or is the main gripe that you don't feel the love for open world goalless games is a legitimate one based in the concepts of what you consider to be good gaming?
It was a more introspective assertion, with the hope that maybe I was missing something here in my assertion that I don't find those goalless games fun.
I have heard enough reason why people might think it is fun, but have concluded that it's not fun for me.
My current gripe is a trend of games moving towards the soulless empty pointless expanse game design - like in No Mans Sky, the new Zelda, FFXV, MMOs in general, Elder Scrolls etc.. (or on the flipside, completely linear highly scripted paths like Collar Doodie or FFXIII).
It's like... there's no more room for the middle ground, focused but with freedom.

author=kentonaSame. I don't look at it like Zephyr, I guess. I make a 'new life' in the game - hence the RP one I'm currently doing. I mean... it's not like real life has skeletons who shoot the shit out of you and teleporting endermen who steal dirt blocks and melons and scream at you with a horrible voice or zombies that wear armour and their tiny zombie children who ride chickens into battle or giant flying tentacle creatures that cry and spit fireballs at your or a hell dimension full of nastiness and lava or floating islands in the sky or villagers that offer ridiculous trades (well, okay, maybe it does have them ;p ) or jungle temples with traps and treasure to find or ocelots that turn into different breeds of cat when you tame them or animals that reproduce on 'command'(they don't have gender and breed when you feed them) or the ability to change where ore spawns (want diamond to spawn at the top of mountains? You can do that~) or giant darkwood forests with huge mushrooms growing in them or mooshrooms or underwater temples that are guarded by laser-shooting octopodic-type creatures where the only treasure you find is gold (bah) and sponge (double bah) or pyramids that have an explosive trap that destroys the treasure if you're not careful or underground chasms filled with water and lava and so many ores to mine or enchantments that can be applied to armour, weapons and tools to make them do various things like breathe underwater or increase the drop rate of special items or ... I could go on. I haven't even touched on mods and there are literally hundreds of them, all doing different things like allowing you to build a rocket to go to the moon and Mars or magical ones that let you indulge in ritualistic sacrifice or build golems and enchant shit or use the power of flowers to create stuff or build a factory that makes drugs or... so much stuff. So very, very much stuff.
I play games to escape real life, though...
The only issue I have with the game is that it uses Java. Of all things. Fucking Java. Why?! ;.;
author=kentonaI do agree with this - a lot of games nowdays are missing soul. They try so hard to copy other games that do shit better, instead of focussing on making that game special instead. There are some good ones, sure, but unfortunately there needs to be more focus by the creators on what they're making and less on what worked for someone else's game. :/

Yeah, non-linear empty game design for the sake of non-linearity but lacking in content is a huge deal, especially when it's just to mimic others. I was specifically defending Minecraft's design because I think it's an innovative game, I mean voxel-based creation of your own survival, with houses and day and night cycles that actually make sense, and a deep crafting system had only really been done well before with Dwarf Fortress (which inspired it), and that game is incredibly hard to get into but apparently immensely satisfying.
But when you look at the current trend of survival games like Rust and The Forest are aiming for complete freedom but missing in depth. They also mimick other trends.
I think the point I'm trying to make is, I don't really mind if it's open-world and even soulless so much, as long as it's original and innovative. Mind you, if it's original and innovative, then that probably means it has a lot of soul :P I think if you're willing to play Minecraft for 5 minutes and say, "This is pretty cool, but it's not really my thing", I'd really respect that, and I think that's a mature viewpoint to have. There's plenty of things that I view highly from a critical standpoint that I wouldn't play for enjoyment, same with films and games and other forms of media. There's a certain type of film like Lincoln where you go "that was a great film, and it was really important, but I'd never ever watch it again, oh no".

I have an urge to refer to this game since I've played it.
author=LibertyActually, these things can happen in real life. The Probability is almost non-existing, but they can. Video games are part of it after all. And these mindfogs had to be created somehow. For NPCs these games are reality.author=kentonaI play games to escape real life, though...Same. I don't look at it like Zephyr, I guess. And I don't think games are getting soulless. I know, that wasn't what you wrote. The problem is that the industry moved. There is more good and original games than ever. Rock Paper Shotgun is reporting few new stars every day. AAA production is something what the player-developer should avoid. There are good AAA games too. These are rare.

"No middle ground" / "one extreme or the other" is a pretty common problem with people on any subject...
I'll be honest, I don't care much for Minecraft's regular survival mode, and I played on Xbox version, so no mods or anything (but at least it has tutorials). It's not the lack of a defined goal that bothers me, it's just that finding anything is so damn tedious. Like, can I craft a metal detector or train a sniffing dog or something? It's somewhat related to what people were complaining about with the whole "soulless randomness" thing, where there's basically nothing in terms of landmarks for finding important materials like gold and red stone. They only appear at certain depths, sure, but within those depths can be freaking ANYWHERE. That... and the mining sound kinda sounds like my cat trying to throw up...
Create Mode (read: unlimited access to all blocks and items) I think at least has some RPing potential if you have friends, if not at least the simple joy of placing absurd amounts of TNT and blowing it all up. They kinda killed my "Adventures of Sheep Man and Rocket Squid" shenanigans by patching out the floating squid glitch, tho...
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If I wanted minecraft to be like real life I would just give up my job and my computer and my home and go out into the wilderness and start punching trees.
@turkeyDawg: To be fair, the crafting in the console versions of the game are shit. Complete and utter tripe. Horribad. What in hell's name were they thinking? >.<;
Had my niece and nephew over yesterday. Their favourite game is minecraft so I showed them some modded stuff. The first thing they wanted to do when we found an ancient Aztec ruin? Blow it up. Go-go Creative mode! Gotta admit, it was fun blowing the hell out of an ancient pyramid, though it took a lot more tnt than I thought. Then we made a tnt chain from bottom level (bedrock) to the top map height and blew things sky high. Also fun, especially now that my computer can deal with that (my older one would have crashed me out or lagged to hell.)
Kids know how to have fun. ;p
