FATHER: MONSTER MAKING EVENT

The difference is that before Pokemon you'd completed a few games that were known so people knew the 'pay-off' was real and that you were sure to finish a game. The 'more than likely' assured release of the game was a big part in the 'reward' that people could expect.

That and Pokemon, man. Everyone wants to make their own Pokemon and then catch it in a game. Because, Pokemon!.

Someone who hasn't completed a game before is going to draw less of a crowd because there's no guarantee or even a slight glimpse of promise that their work will see the light of day. There's no reward for people to get serious in doing so. And yes, the layout doesn't help, nor that people don't know the game in question.

I mean, it's not fair but that's how it is.

You're taking this a little too hard. Try to find a solution instead of beating yourself over it or taking what people are saying as personal attacks.

To start off, try getting the community a bit more involved with the submissions they make. Rather than just having people submit some crazy monster and call it a day, get people to design it and come up with a concept, like a high defense, low offense status user based off a skunk, or a flea that uses a unique skill to boost speed every turn... Something more specific. That way, it will at least feel like the participants are doing something meaningful with their submissions rather than handing out free work.

You also need to set up a clear premise for your project. I actually checked the project page before making my post in this thread, and even then it didn't seem like the game had a clear idea as to what it's about other than being based off Mother 3. That also decreases the incentive for anyone to submit an idea.

This is what I did with the Pokemon RMN Event, if it helps you out (I did make some mistakes). At the time I made this I had no idea how the plot of the game was going to carry out (the submissions actually helped formulate it), but still, I established the basic premise of "Kid trainer going to a brand new region filled with exotic Pokemon", and broke down in exact detail as to what I was looking for with each submission, going as far as to provide points of reference to those unfamiliar with the mechanics of the game. That way, people won't have to guess as much as to what they should submit, and it overall makes their efforts feel more rewarding.

By the way, I disagree that there is no reward to these types of events. The reward is that you get to see your awesome idea implemented into a potentially great game. Considering that we are a community of developers, however, that reward would feel even more satisfying if the submissions were expanded to allow contestants to design their submissions around your game, as already stated.

I would love to open it to stats, powers, etc. but the battle system is fairly limited. I based the system off an old Gameboy game For the frog the bell tolls. The game also is taking less and less inspiration from Mother 3. Overall, it is being inspired by Gameboy and GBA games that I've played. I don't have a super clear idea yet because with the template for the game already set up, it's hard for me to go with only one idea. Then one idea comes up, the others get scrapped. I'm just trying to find a central focus for the game.

Like I said, the only Stats that monsters have are BP and Speed. for now. There's only 4 stats total. Making further stats would only further complicate the game. This game doesn't have the freedom that Pokemon games have battle system wise. The game in short is an homage to simpler times in video games. Please, take a look at this game.

I guess I could add a spot for what the enemy does I guess. Like, someone already submitted an idea where the fox says something about your mom. I can do that but not much else. This game, inspired Father's battle system. It's quick, quirky, and gets you through the game. I decided to mix that with Pokemon and Mother to get the result that's here now. So, in short I can't add much but descriptions for enemy attacks because they can't learn Flamethrower or Ice Beam, only a simple attack.

Thanks for the advice, I'll work on the enemy submission to a point where I think it can pass. Just keep in mind, the enemies are supposed to be humorous. And I'll be converting them to sprites by my lonesome. In the end, I'll be doing the work. I just, once again, thought that people who don't make games on the site can be creative in their own way.

I'd say the game has gained decent traction. It's no FF BMP or anything but it's going along nicely I think. Like I said, I can't offer much in terms of physical rewards. The sketches will be made into enemies by me so I don't know what else I can offer. I'm just one guy. A guy in honors college at that. I know, I have a decent profiled game that hasn't released yet: Dragon Quest. I'll get that up soon but even then, this game and DQ are like night and day. I don't see how DQ+'s release would bolster interest in Father.
Because then you'd have a complete game? People would be more inclined to lend a hand if they know it's going to be finished so they can see it and seeing you finish at least one game means you're more likely to finish the next?

It's pretty self-explanatory.

Also, don't double post. Edit your previous post and add to it instead. It is a site rule.

Which is a flagrant case of copyright infringement against my original character, Angel Dustbunny.
Umm, I'm more than familiar with that derivative trash, Angel Dustbunny, because of our lengthy legal battle between it and my original character, PCPeanut, before I got a cease and desist from the Planters corporation.

I'm going to be honest: I was hoping this would go back and forth all day, haha. Names I never got to use:

Heroinnebago
Phencyclidinosaur
Ecstaseahorse
Oxycottontail
MDMApe

MDMApe is great at parties, by the way.

Haha, feel free to use Angel Dustbunny if you like!
Yeah, you can use any of those names. Just don't cite me--I'm not proud of what I did here today, hahaha.

lol, I'm more surprised than anything. I like to think I'm funny, these puns only enhance the game's humor appeal. Thanks:D
