This is that inevitable post where the mythical Holbert, long since dead, and oft-rumored to never have existed, revives long enough to post a short political message and goes back to lurking.

So, I started this Obama fundraiser page, hosted on my.barackobama.com. I was asked by some generic e-mail to join Obama's Grassroots Finance Committee and raise $1,000 for Barack Obama, so he can spend that money kicking ass and calling John McCain an old, illiterate warmonger on TV. I was all like, "I'm game!" and then decided to pretend to be an overachiever and raise $5000, because that would be totally one-part pretentious and also two-part awesome.

One house, one spouse: Obama-Biden '08.

Note: Thanks to WIP, who was the first donater.

Though probably most of us. =)
I briefly considered contributing a full $5000 right this second.

Then I realized that is like a year's worth of rent and also that political donations are not tax-deductible.
I like how Obama's running mate is an old white man.

Kentona: Think of this donation as tribute payment. Electing Obama will not result in your country being invaded by ours. You know they'll think of some excuse, someday.

It's a Michael Moore film, too.

As a side note, it is reassuring that processing of tar sands and oil shale could keep the price of oil sustainable at under $100/bbl for several centuries even with current consumption (upcoming regulations and technologies in many countries will probably cause consumption to decrease) - with almost all of it (60-80%) being produced in North America! Why are the current nominees for president not discussing this instead of offshore drilling.

Extracting oil from tar sands is too energy inefficient right now. Takes about as much energy (from water pumps and machines and stuff) as we get from the end product. Of course, that'll change with time. The point is not how much fossil fuel is left, but how quickly and economically we can harvest it. Right now, without light, sweet crude from easy sources like the middle east, the world economy would come to a grinding halt.

But this topic is supposed to be about Obama. I already gave him munee so pffft.

Patently untrue.

Tar sands operations are economic at $30/bbl (US dollars). At over $100/bbl, you can imagine it would be extremely profitable!

But what does the Canadian government know :(

oh shi--
I'm actually against anything that brings down oil prices too much in principle just because it encourages us to continue using an inherently unsustainable and unsafe fuel source, and the economic hardship could drive innovation.

Besides, Him, it's crazy to say that oil consumption is set to decrease when China hasn't hit its peak usage yet. China's probably going to be on an order of three times as bad as America has been when it comes to oil usage.

Which means we need to drill it so they don't. We have much better environmental standards than China will ever have.

Okay, but only if we use use it exclusively to make giant, frivolous things out of plastic. Like a 1/1 plastic model of Voltron or something.

Drill here, drill now is stupid considering our American companies will just sell what little oil we have to Japan, like we do now, to make a quick buck.

I would be more interested in it if we had an embargo on oil exports.

We have had disgusting enviromental policies for much of our history. They'll catch on too.

Cars marketed in China pollute a ton but have extremely high fuel efficiency and government mandates will result in more efficient cars in the US. I really don't see consumption increasing very much or really at all because efficiency is now a huge priority in the auto market - it wasn't when gasoline was only a dollar. So no, it's not crazy to say that.
