I'm facing the same dilemma in my project. The best solution I've thought of is to use the description field to tell the player what a piece of equipment actually does. Of course, that means you'll have less room for flavor text, and it also won't give the player the handy quick-comparison of how much it raises their stats by compared to what they currently have equipped. As a partial solution, you could give the equipment a plain stat boost in addition to your percentage thing, which would at least let the player know which equipment is higher than what they currently have, and since you're already fiddling with the stats behind the scenes it shouldn't be too hard for you to compensate for the extra stat boost if it isn't already small enough to ignore in the first place.
