It's about time.

They have a whole new team dedicated to making JRPGs the first game is tentatively called ProjectSetsuna. I hope it's awesome!

Hopefully in the years to come we will not only see new RPGs like Setsuna but also sequels to classics like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Act Raisernot an RPG but still a Enix classic, Vagrant Story, Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, and more
Bravely Default wasn't a jrpg?

Bravely Default wasn't a jrpg?
That's the title that convinced them to make more JRPGs
Square was surprised that Default sold so well.
They thought that people weren't interested in JRPGs any more.
Basically you can see Bravely Default as a testing grounds for whether there was still a market for this stuff.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

That was three years ago. They announced that they were going to make traditional JRPGs again three years ago. Then they promptly proceeded not to do anything resembling that. And now, three years later, they are once again announcing only that they intend to do it in the future.

Fool me one, shame on you.
well they did make bravely second at least right
and there seems to be a few jrpgs coming
i mean there's at least a new SaGa
People seem to be really, really enjoying FFXIV as well. MMOs aren't my thing, but it's good to see a quality product.

The 524 is for 524 Stone Crabs

IMO it's been way too long since we've had another Dragon Quest game. Where are the announcements for that? :(

I think they recently announced a Dragon Quest spin off that's like Dynasty Warriors.
But, yeah that doesn't really count as a real DQ game. Just thought I'd mention it though.
Still waiting for an actually deep JRPG here - Persona 4 was good, but still...
It's a rare thing to find, certainly.
I still wonder why Blue Dragon was fun enough that I could play through it entirely.
Well, I guess there's always the Tales series. It's not really my cup of tea, personally..... but they're very long-lasting. It seems like they've made fifty thousand of those.

THIS game is why I want a PS4, btw.

Good to see I'm not the only one who would buy a system just for a Warriors game. That and Killer Instinct are the only reasons I've given Xbox One a glance.
I haven't been following this company since FF12 (lolz). When did they stop making RPGs? What do they make now?

They make action games, casual social games for cell phones, and ports of games that are more than a decade old.

For the most part they stopped focusing on RPGs after FF12. There have been a handful in there but it's not people's imagination that they stopped making them - they've made several press releases waffling on the matter but all of them at least admit that there was an intention to stop focusing on them. Word is that some executives and/or marketing people in the company haven't wanted them to make more RPGs for quite a while because they are the least profitable games they make and they think that most people don't want to play turn-based games any more (perhaps correctly). So they basically skipped an entire console generation with most of their main RPG series.

It doesn't help that Nomura's insanity led to FF15 taking a decade to develop, compared to the 2-4 years that it takes to develop an average large-scale RPG like that.
when are they remaking Mystic Quest in 3D

Resident Terrapin

They make various highly polished tech demos that they can show off at an infinite number of conferences in order to dupe audiences and appease shareholders. FF15 is really coming guys, we promise! In the meantime, please enjoy Episode Ducat$ version 5.79a.

I guess what LockeZ said is also true. They make cell phone games, which sounds stupid, but the market for them is massive in Japan. People just can't get enough of their idol sims while on the go, I guess.

Upon checking the list of games they've made over the last five years, I discovered that they released two Japanese-only Mana games during that time, both for cell phones. Circle of Mana is a free-to-play collectible card game where you can buy booster packs. Rise of Mana is a free-to-play cooperative dungeon-crawling action game where you can buy materials for weapon/armor crafting, and was apparently unbad enough to get ported to the PS Vita last month.

Some news sites are calling Rise of Mana an "action RPG," but if it didn't have Mana in the name, they wouldn't call it that. It's an action game that has experience points. But every game has experience points now. That's not a meaningful qualifier any more, and hasn't been for close to a decade. It takes more for a game to actually feel like an RPG.

Square-Enix does better than basically any other company on earth at making high-quality cell phone games, for what that's worth. Unfortunately that's not enough to make them good. Also, almost none of them get translated.
