I know you guys are gonna hate me for this, but I'm a Christian and I believe homosexuality is a sin, so I'm against the institutionalization and normalization of it.
You're probably gonna hate me for this but this was an ignorant ass thing to say and no one cares that you have such a shit view of sexuality.

Go beak off somewhere else. There are people who are rightfully happy here, so let them be happy. Literally no one wants to hear your opinion right now except for other bigots.

Seriously man?

Like... Seriously?

For real though. Really?

My friend is a staunch Christian and even he doesn't care.

This makes me seriously uncomfortable about working with you, considering that my own sexuality is pretty sinful in terms of the one thing the Bible thinks is okay.

FYI I'm super drunk right now so take it with a grain of salt k

I only just registered what happened, I've seen this thread title all day but it only now hit me that OHH WAIT THEY'RE ACTUALLY MAKING THIS FEDERAL LAW NOW.

I'm so used to seeing threads decrying the pitiable state of gay-rights legislation in America I had assumed this was just another one. Noep!

@Sated The bad news is that more than 50 percent of Americans vote Republican.

Actually, only about 15-20% of the population votes Republican, because only roughly 35-40% of the population votes in any given election for any given candidate. The same can be said for the Democrats. Both parties roughly have 15% of the voting population registered as or considering themselves aligned as a Dem/Rep and the rest of the voting block considers themselves Independent, Libertarian, Green, etc, etc. Also, voter turnout is a lot higher during Presidential elections or when so-called key seats for either party are under threat of being taken by the opposing party, so there are exceptions to the rule.

The other 60% is too busy smoking weed and having gay sex because that's way more productive.

And as a human being, I say that's full of shit.

But let's be friends anyway because you're a cool dude. You've contributed so much to the community and it'd be a shame if we let this get in the way.

Isn't equality great?

That's cool, but religion should always be a choice, never a part of government that is enforced. After all, how can we call ourselves a "free country" (though I almost think that in itself is a huge misconception) when people of differing opinions are outright denied equal opportunities in life?

Just because you don't agree with it, doesn't mean anyone else should ride the same boat, so what you just said was really selfish. I expected better from you, dude.

A lot of people do consider themselves republican or democratic even if they rarely vote.

As a Christian, my own opinion is that the government shouldn't recognize marriage. It's a religious union, performed by a religious official, that means wildly different things in different religions.

I think the US government doesn't necessarily recognize marriage by its religious values, otherwise just about anyone can claim that they are "officially" married to someone. Marriage comes with filing for spouses and all that other paperwork that's pretty much there so that the government can keep track of you.
exactly, all those rights and stuffs you get once you have an actual spouse
it's pretty shitty to have a 30+ yrs relationship with someone and not being able to visit them on the hospital because according to the law you're "friends" :V
also inheritance, and all that law jargon I don't know in English and only in portuguese (I need to learn that omg, I've never noticed I didn't know that)

Yeah, I'm saying they shouldn't keep track of it at all. It demonstrably comes with a lot of extra baggage that could be avoided if they simply stopped having marriage represent any kind of legal status at all.

I mean, a lot of people don't really believe in marriage. I know a lot of atheists and agnostics who don't. It's not right to deny rights to those people because of their religion either.

I wonder how soon the USA military will have until they can't discharge gay people any more? I mean the current policy is don't ask, don't tell, right?

And just remember that Canada was first.

You're about 4 years late on that train, homie. We stopping giving a shit about gay people in the military for a while now. Even before the law, it was more or less a lip service thing. It was really hard to get discharged on a DADT breach. I serve with gay people and nobody really cares.

This might sound dismissive, but I'm glad that 'nobody really cares'. It's better than me saying 'yeah I knew tons of gay dudes in my command who were beaten for being gay', which thankfully has never happened among those I've served with.

I'm not going to gang up on you and shit on you because I'm a grown ass man and I can voice my dissent to your opinion without doing so, but I'm going to say I'm really glad that the courts don't agree with you. How do you feel about marriage between nonreligious people? Do you believe that's also wrong?

This is an extremely weak argument. Christians, Jews, and even Muslims are not the first to participate in marriage, and documentation of the earliest marriages by government predate earliest documentation of marriages by religious institutions. Also, marriage has been most commonly regarded throughout history as a union between families, with the union between husband and wife merely being a contractual stipulation. In fact, there has never been a time in which marriage was not recognized as a contract between two seperate parties. The basic form of marriage regards the woman as property, sold to the husbands family in exchange for goods and longterm support. America is actually rather progressive in that we are one of the few countries that actually gives women a choice in the marriage process. Largely, marriage is typically a prearranged business deal in which the woman has no say or choice.

Of course, if you prefer marriage as a religious institution, the following are perfectly acceptable examples of marriage in accordance with biblical law:

A woman sold to a man's family for livestock
Selling your daughter as a slave
Being required to marry your rapist
Being required to marry your dead husband's brother
Being forced to give your daughter to your master

Yeah! Let's hear it for Christian values!
