HELP ME COME UP WITH (BIG) CREATURES

Posts

@Shinan
Solar-powered flyer: It's a improvement on the original, but how does it gather materials with which to grow or to regenerate wounds? I don't think solar energy is enough for that. I guess it could eat something in the air?

Root-creature: It's very similar to LockeZ creature, indeed. I like the pleasant poison part though.

@karins_soulkeeper
That is a very inventive take on something not so original that I could definitely use. Alot more realistic and well thought out than the first creatures. You should do more!

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Volcaridea

This is a picture of a Caridea shrimp that I photoshopped onto a picture of a volcano, because why the hell not.

Size: Up to 170 meters tall.

Habitat: Lives within the magma in active volcanos, of which its home planet has many. Emerges to feed, but spends most of its life submerged.

Diet: The volcaridea is a scavenger which feeds on the charred remains of creatures that are killed by volcanic eruptions.

Reproduction: Lays eggs within the magma, where other creatures are unable to harm them until they hatch. However, the harsh magma kills most newborns before they have a chance to grow.

Description: Its extremely thick exoskeleton shields it from the heat to an impressive degree, but because it is cold-blooded, that means it actually requires the heat of the magma to survive; other sources of warmth are unable to penetrate its body. It is unable to survive in the open for extended periods of time and must return to a volcano to sleep. Its feelers are extremely important, as it has no ability to see or smell within the dense magma.
I had a stab at making unity's creature(s).

I took some liberties with the main creature to make it look less like a snail.

@LockeZ
I guess it lives on a planet with lots of active volcanos. Are there really that many creatures that burn to death at a given time to sustain a creature of that size though? I would think that with the massive exoskeleton it's probably not very mobile, how does it find others of the same species to reproduce?
You didn't describe it much except that it has feelers and a thick exoskeleton, is it supposed to look like the shrimp?

Yeah, I was imagining it looking like a giant shrimp, or some kind of crustacean at least. I was also thinking the planet, or at least some region of the planet, would be covered in tons of extremely active volcanos. It's the kind of creature that could thrive in such an area.

As far as finding others to reproduce with, it doesn't necessarily live in a single volcano, since there are so many. It may travel from one pool of magma to another in search of food if there isn't enough around the one it's currently in, and may find another volcaridea already there.

Solar-powered flyer: It's a improvement on the original, but how does it gather materials with which to grow or to regenerate wounds? I don't think solar energy is enough for that. I guess it could eat something in the air?

One of the ideas is that it might come from a planet that is closer to a sun, or maybe from one with more than one sun (and thus perpetual day). The solar energy is through some sort of photosynthesis (a flying plant!)

The "fixing" of the wings I thought might come from other creatures. An idea for habitat is that it comes from a hot planet, where the liquid that covers most of it is actual some sort of melted metal. With geysers and other stuff that throws things up in the air making the air full of particles. So the flying creature has to be very high up to get sunlight, lower down is probably full of all kinds of particles (and other dangers) But in the air there's also tiny creatures that go around with the wind, eating the air particles. And so the tiny creatures attach themselves to a flyer and eat other stuff that is stuck on the flyer. (the idea was just that solar panels need cleaning, and wouldn't it be fun if there were thousands of tiny creatures just eating all the dust)

I said sky-whale but really it would look nothing like that. It's like a flying branch with gigantic wings. It might not even need a mouth, maybe its nervous system isn't even in the central area but spread out on the wings. It could be like a flying plant. From a hot planet with oceans of melted metal.

That looks totally awesome! I love what you did with the idea :DDDD

Solar whale: If flight is that easy on that planet, then decomposed plant and animal matter could populate the sky like it populates Earth's soil. The creature could potentially feed on it like a plant on Earth feeds on the nutrients in the dirt. Or if it were more animal-like, it could be an herbivore that feeds on airborne plants.

If the game is designed for the player to explore each planet on foot, then a planet with gravity low enough for a human to fly by flapping their arms where everything you find is flying in the air is probably not a great plan from a gameplay standpoint. If the player is exploring in a spaceship, or just sending probes to each planet from a menu, then it seems plausible enough.
@LockeZ
Crustacean: it would probably make more sense to have short legs on the side (like a lobster) rather than long ones, because with how much a exoskeleton weighs they would probably snap without support. It would make it move slower, but I don't see any other way. I guess large creatures often live for a long time, so I guess it's fine to suppose that it will eventually find another volcaridea if it moves from volcano to volcano. It would be cooler(or hotter) if they had some yearly mating ritual though.

Shinan & LockeZ
Solar flying thing: Photosyntesis might work, but photosyntesis alone does not suffice, it still needs to make cells (or something else) with nutrients which you don't get in the air, normal plants get those from their roots. It's probably best if it also eats other plants or stuff flying around in the air like LockeZ says.

Also, anywhere is walkable in the game, even places like gas giants. You buy upgrades to your suit that allows you to travel to previously unavailable places, like Jet packs, Gravity shields, Deep sea gear etc., so go nuts with the enviroments.

Mmm, I do like the idea of a yearly mating ritual, do that instead. I've never watched a nature show for more than two minutes in my life so that probably would never have occured to me. And yeah, it needs shorter thicker legs than the photo, and would probably drag its abdomen on the ground when it walks. It's a scavenger that (hopefully) has no predators, so it doesn't really need to move very fast on land.

I'll never change. "Me" is better than your opinion, dummy!

Yo mama?

Okay, sorry. What about a scarily huge space-eel?

Or the Quasar Toast?

It's like a slice of Toast that is super fucking angry and moves all ominous-like.

Also a mechanical butterfly of oily liquid death would be hype, too.

All I can think of right now.
Thank you for your input, even though you clearly haven't read anything except the title of the thread.

Edit:I took a stab at the Volcaridea:

Well here's the creature from my nightmare I had the other day ;w; (It's not helping that I have Thalassophobia)
Something I drew myself:

A picture from the internet:

Footage picture:

Size:Around is big as a whale
Habitat:Ocean, dark and scary ocean
Diet:Anything it comes across
Description:A giant octopus/squid like creature with a flat body and blue dots. It is dark blue or black and mostly prays on big creatures, but it does attack submarines and people. It doesn't go near the surface.
@LockeZ
Now that you mention it...

@ExtremeDevelopment
I figured someone would suggest the giant squid sooner or later.
Not very original, but I guess you can always make some changes to the classic, like this.

And here's a solar-powered flyer.

Well gasbags are always an option. That name is based on humans naming them, we're not that inventive.

Colouring is probably more like this though

Size: Big, kilometres across when full grown and inflated.
Habitat:The atmosphere of hydrogen, helium & methane rich gas giants
Diet: Mostly thrive on the organic molecules in the atmosphere. They also entrap with their tendrils a selection of smaller creatures that also feed on the molecular stew. They are not above feeding on the juvenile members of their own species especially when they are close to spawning and need to build up their resources, this semi-cannibalistic behaviour is offset in that when they die they become a massive food source for all the lesser creatures including their own kind.
Description: Floating in the currents of suitable gas giants these behemoths inflate and deflate their gasbags to control their own buoyancy as they go in search of food sources, making sure to stay in the cooler richer upper atmosphere where organic materials survive. Much like Earth coral when conditions are right they as a species release tens of thousands of eggs/sperm bundles into the currents to float around the planet and become fertilised far from their parents. The reproductive rate is quite low and the majority of the eggs and sperm packets are consumed by other species and occasionally the parental species as a consequence. Their intelligence has not been accurately measured but they do possess a sizeable brain (in relation to body size) in the middle section of their bodies, hanging directly below the inflatable membrane of the gasbag. This section also contains digestive organs and rudimentary visual apparatus. No active threat to non-native species unless you get caught in the tendrils, then you're lunch.

Hey SnowOwl are you ok with something a little less animal-like and more plant-like?

Yes, for the most part, it's collage. However, not always, like for the creature unity suggested I made it myself.

@nhubi
2nd post: Yes, that is fine. There are already a suggestion that I would call mostly plant (LockeZ first one). Everything that you could reasonably call life is fine.

1st post: I had something similar in mind for gas giants, myself. It's quite the challenge to come up with something that could reasonable live where there are no solid ground or water and I think that your creature does it well, while probably also giving me a good opportunity to make something visually appealing. Nice. More creatures from gas giants would be appreciated, since gas giants are actually pretty numerous, since Hydrogen and Helium are the most common elements in the universe.
Speaking of plants, I'd suggest some root-moss creature living in an tropical environment. It's very flat and covers most of the planet/tropical area with low-grounded roots and occasional threads growing up trees to gather more sunlight.
Reproduction is done via saplings in the root net, kind of like bamboo (?), so that they stay connected
While that certainly would be big, I don't think it would be very interesting for the player to discover without some exciting feature.
