WE ARE! TALKING ABOUT ONE PIECE~

@Liberty: Not that I grant this "debate" any major importance :P but saying in the OP that he has published the most comic books can be interpreted as having the highest number of volumes... hence why I wanted to point out that the award precises it's about copies.
Having consistent sales for so long is definitely commendable though.

I don't know what you're taking issue with. It was said in my first post exactly what the award is - the most published comic books by a single author. That is what the award title is. It is EXACTLY that. I never said otherwise so I have no idea what your argument is about. I never said volumes, I said the exact title of the award it received.

This is straight from the Guinness World record site. This is the name of the award One Piece was given. Did I not spell that out exactly as it says because I'm pretty damn sure I did. He has published the most comics for a single author in one series. That is fact. Undisputed unless you'd like to tell Guinness differently.
Whatever, though. I'll add a link so people can check it for themselves. :/

Don't get me started on the rap intro. I hated it with Pokemon and I hated it with One Piece. That being said if I didn't see the characters in the little images of the anime episodes I'd swear some of them look like they are going to die or are dead. This shit must have been heart pounding suspenseful in Japan when it aired on TV.
EDIT: Okay...what the fuck Liberty. This is bullshit. These characters hardly even look the same anymore. When it was one or two I could look past it. But did they really change EVERY BLOODY CHARACTER to make them more sterile and child friendly? I mean it's bad enough that fight scenes were heavily edited (I expected that since it was the 4KIDS channel) but sweet zombie jesus on a flaming pogo stick this is ridiculous. I mean I've heard of fucking censorship but what the fuck America?

Well, Chapter 795 appears to finally clear up some stuff about the fate of the Thousand Sunny and Issho's plans. That, and...
FINALLY reveal a ton about Kaido, who's looking... Terrifying. I'm definitely loving the jolly roger he uses and the general design of his crewmembers- sort of a blend of vikings and traditional One Piece garb. I never would have guessed that Kaido is a guy who tries to kill himself for fun. Christ.
Man, Kaido's design is just great. I love that he's so trusting in his ability not to die that he goes out of his way to try kill himself for fun, and that 'stache, yo.
I'm not too worried about Luffy beating him - a few people I've seen talking about the possible future battle between them have been all "How can Luffy defeat this guy who can't die!!!" and I'm like, "Luffy doesn't kill, he steals their dreams and that's how he defeats his opponents."
So, yeah, I can see Luffy having a heads-up on most contenders for Kaido's head, if only because Luffy won't be fretting about how to kill the guy. (Not that Luffy really frets about his battles in any case. XD )
It was good to see Kidd and the others - they look like they're in for a hell of a fight. But the big fun was seeing the rest of the crew and what they're up to. From the looks of it there's another female character that might be Nakama-possible (some say she looks like a fox-girl. My initial thought was she looked a bit like a deer-girl. We'll see, I'm sure.) and Sanji breaks out the sunglasses. Hopefully this will be a return of the Prince. And damn, Nami can swim. I really like her outfit here too. Hell, all their outfits are great. XD
(One thing you gotta give credit to OP for aside from the great characters/story/etc is that they change their clothes a lot, even the men. It's so nice to see.)

The one thing I could say about the eventual Luffy vs Kaido showdown is that, at the moment at least (and since he was first talked about I believe) Kaido doesn't seem to have any dreams at all. His obsession with dying goes further to assert that he's more like a force of nature than anything- the only thing he seems to care about are the people and places that he owns. So Luffy would have a hard time destroying anything about a guy that wants to see the world crumble into nothingness out of pure apathy.
Which will make that showdown all the more epic when it comes. Too early to talk about it anyways, if the two cross paths now it will more than likely be a situation where Luffy engages in a hopeless fight or Law forces him to run away ASAP. By the time the final fight rolls around who knows what kinds of powers and allies Luffy will have accumulated?
I'll agree on the clothing front. One Piece kind of put the need for interesting clothes in character design in the forefront of my mind for a long time, and even now I still look to it for inspiration when I'm trying to create something 'iconic' looking. I want to use the same effect in my games down the road (albeit to a lesser degree- it would be adding a LOT of unnecessary work to make battle graphics, map graphics, concept art, etc for different outfits) for different terrain/climate types seen along RPG travels. It think it would add a lot to the worldbuilding in those types of games.

ONE PIECE IS GREATTT!!
How Oda let's all his characters come back at some point... GENIUUSSSS
I haven't been as impressed with the series after the timeskip though, for some reason...
Enies Lobby was my favorite arc by far.

One Piece is best read/watched in one sitting, not episode/chapter by episode/chapter. It's supposed to be read fast-paced instead of slowly, but that's been the case since the inception, really. Even Enies Lobby was slow when it was chapter/episode by chapter/episode.

I'm usually on board with this too, but the Mr. 2 thing was bogus IMO. Completely ruins the tearjerker finale of the Impel Down arc once you know that he's a-okay (which makes absolutely no sense considering the situation he was in).

I might have to agree with you there- the post timeskip stuff is only just now really getting good, to be honest. I wasn't a fan of Fishman Island or Punk Hazard (christ, PH dragged on for AGES), but Dressrosa seems to be a return to form for the series in terms of setting, atmosphere, and story. I'll always have a special nostalgic place in my heart for early One Piece though, from the beginning to the end of Skypeia.
Not enough people appreciate the Skypeia arc. Most people who mention it hated it. I loved it to bits. :<
Oh man, I forgot to talk about last week's chapter! I'm thinking Luffy is gonna tell everyone the truth about Kyros (and almost get caught by the Marines). I wonder if he'll whisk Rebecca or Violet off with him, but I doubt it.
Though Violet would make an interesting match for the crew - her ability to see at long distances would be great for a scout and Sanji would finally have a chance not to be rebuffed all the damn time (sometimes I feel so sorry for the poor guy... then he does something pervy and the pity vanishes ;p ).
I assume that the fact the throne would go to Rebecca instead of Violet means that Violet stepped back from her claim to the throne - probably as a sort of self-imposed penance over working for Doffy all those years. I couldn't see the people being happy with her being Queen.
Also it was great to see Sengoku. The new work load is doing wonders for his attitude. He's definitely picked up some of Garp's mannerisms and it was hilarious seeing him reacting to things. Poor Tsuru. As if having one Garp on her hands wasn't enough. XD

I really need to pick that show back up sometime. a friend got me into it a couple years back, and I binge-watched it up to the start of the whole Alabasta thing(?), but after that I kind of left it for later and never got back to it.
really fun and good-natured show, with a great aesthetic and a better approach to the whole shonen fighting thing than just comparing raw power. it has a lot of the typical shonen anime problems going for it, at least at the start, but I hear Oda took some serious steps to fix that at some point, so that's neat.
... Oda's by all accounts a ridiculously hard-working person, too. I remember seeing his daily schedule once. in a week, the guy sleeps enough for maybe four days.

I'm sorry but all I can think about One Piece is how laughably bad the 4kids dub was.
Should I give the re-dub/manga a chance?
Should I give the re-dub/manga a chance?
I was watching the fansubbed version on a friend's suggestion, personally, and I have no complaints. if I get an ereader at some point I might switch to the manga, but having a soundtrack and some colour is really nice too. I can't decide!
Yeah, the 4kids version is an embarrassment. I think One Piece and Hunter X Hunter are the best shonen stuff out there, so if you like the genre at all, they're must-sees/reads. I'd make sure to watch One Piece at least up through the Arlong arc; that was about when I felt hooked.
Also, every time I see this thread's title, this song plays in my head:

@Mawk:
Oda gets about 2-4 hours sleep a night, hence why he's on a schedule where he has a week off every month or so. Because he overworks himself quite badly, his managers make sure he has time off.
Like I said to Ratty below, I do recommend reading the manga, but the anime has pretty much caught up to where the manga is now, so you can watch that too. Again, if you read the manga first then watch the anime second, you can skip through the slower parts of the anime (and the filler - though the arc just after Skypeia is really good, even if it is filler). You'll also see plot stories that aren't included in the anime itself, like the chapter stories that show what happened to certain characters after arcs and the like.
And yeah, Oda is the kind of writer who took a 'thing' that was shown in the first chapter and made it relevant about 500 chapters later. He's the master of the shocking return and hiding information in plain sight. He also sets up jokes quite early on and is great at breaking your heart and making you fall in love with the characters.
Chances are that you'll find at least one or two characters (if not more) to love through the series and he's awesome at making characters you thought were evil or irredeemable come back and be loved.
He's also great and pulling the heart-strings. I mean... I cry every time over one specific scene, ffs, and the way he builds his story, makes you assume one thing and then breaks you with the 'knowledge' is just wonderful. Never assume.
@Ratty:
Read the manga. Definitely. If, after that, you want to see it animated, check out the subbed versions - even the re-dub has some issues, sadly. It's better than the 4kids version but it has some problems (and it starts from the end of the Alabasta saga, so you'd have to watch from the start again anyway and that would either be 4kids or subs anyway.)
There are some episodes that really deserve a watch, though. I'd say read the manga then watch the anime. That way you can skip parts without missing out on the story because you've already seen it. >.<_b

Kaidou's design is awesome, i thought after whitebeard we wouldn't be seeing any badass muscular, but not grotesque, lumps of badassery and i'm glad i was wrong. I was also hoping his design wouldn't make me go "what bullshit anatomy" like big mom's did. I'm very happy with his introduction.
I followed One Piece religiously from its inception up until... I think Thriller Bark? It blows my mind because it felt like it was so far in, but I know that even Thriller Bark is like ancient history compared to wherever they are now in the series.
There isn't even really a reason for why I stopped reading/watching it. I just went a day without watching a new episode and then turned into a week. Then a month. Then a year. It's funny, because I was such a ravenous fan of the series. So ravenous that I was upset that Franky joined the crew over Paulie for over a year. I like Franky, but Paulie was... Paulie. They could've had a badass rope/whip fighter with so many hilarious vices. :(
I think one thing that has discouraged me from going back is the time jump. I'm not opposed to time jumps, but I looked at the character designs of the post-jump crew members and shuddered. I felt like some characters got decent redesigns while others just looked fucking WRETCHED. Like Franky. How long ago was the time jump? Because I still think Franky looks flat out stupid and terrible now. I don't dislike Franky, he's always been an awesome powerhouse. His redesign just rubs me all the wrong ways it possibly can.
I also feel a little weird whenever I look at most of the female characters because of how insanely fanservicey the series has gotten. Whenever I see a newer picture of Nami or someone, their breasts are gigantic and they have legs like skyscrapers. I like how Oda's art style has improved so much since he started One Piece, but I don't care for how much he sexualizes his characters anymore.
I will say one thing though! One Piece has way more likable characters than any other anime I ever watched. Seriously. Every arc, almost every character. Rarely was I happy to see a character go. I'm looking up One Piece stuff now and I'm sitting here going, "Oh yeah! That guy/girl! They were awesome!"
This guy was the shit:

I also miss playing my Japanese copy of One Piece: Grand Battle Rush on my old GameCube. That game was BAD. ASS.

I was in the same boat as you when I first saw Franky's redesign, but I think now that it's been a year or two since the time skip and after seeing all the cool new shit he can do with his body it's grown on me a lot.
I personally don't think anybody is going to join the crew on Dressrosa. Early in the arc I was sort of calling Rebecca, but I think her and Violet (the biggest contenders) are just too weak to make a viable addition to the Straw Hats. True, "weak" characters have joined many times in the past BUT. I just don't see it happening with such a huge skill gap, especially with them having to take on Kaido and Big Mom in the future.
Speaking of Kaido, my early predictions about his design were spot on. I'm surprised how close he looks compared to what I thought he was gonna wind up looking like- the only difference is that I thought he'd be the only other normal sized Yonko.
Still can't wait for Jinbe to join... If something doesn't happen first to stop that.
Honestly, I wasn't big on Franky's redesign - at all. Hated it, in fact; but, as with Pizza, it's grown on me over time. Part of the charm is that his hair changes constantly. The other part is that he's the same old crazy Franky. (Also, I agree about Paulie. I wanted him or Iceberg to join instead of Franky, but again, Oda managed to make me like Franky more than I did originally.)
Oda has a way of making you hate or like a person really easily. I really didn't like Franky when he first appeared, and it's no wonder, with what he did, but now I can't imagine the crew without him and often find myself going "Oh, Franky..." fondly. The same with Usopp - hated him to bits since he joined but somewhere between then and Alabasta I'd grown to love him to bits. Goddamn it Oda.
His villains are also really interesting - not only their designs, but their personalities and powers. I mean, a guy with the power of sand, taking over a desert kingdom, with the weakness to water, who is also a bawse and an awesome character who had an amazing battle against Luffy.
And the music... One thing that is worth watching the anime for is the amazing music. I'll be reading the manga and a piece of music will pop into my head that I know would be used in the anime, because that is the kind of moment in which that song would play.
Man UPRC... if you stopped watching at Thriller Park you missed some awesome stuff. And yeah, I can understand the sexualisation hate - but then Nami's never been concerned with covering up and Robin could care less what people think of her clothing choices. The joys of being a pirate is to be free in what you wear and do, I guess. I mean... some of the fashions are just crazy.
Granted, I get annoyed at some parts - the anime have more of them added than the manga. I recall there was a shower scene added recently that isn't in the manga. Still, it's worth it to see the animate frames.
No chapter this week. :<
I kinda want Law to lose his crew and join up, but the poor guy's been Oda's punching bag so much already, he doesn't deserve to lose his crew.
