MARIO OR SONIC: WHO TRIUMPHS?

Are we talking about the games or the characters?
I took it to mean either/or.
I can't stand about 3/4ths of Sonics' game lineup, so the obvious answer for me is Mario. At the same time though, Sonic being a huge source of snark bait and jokes is something I don't feel Mario has quite replicated.

can't beat that

For someone who has mainly grown up with Nintendo consoles ever since I was a little kid when my parents first bought me my NES, whenever I saw Sonic and all those stupid Sega commercials constantly claiming that “Genesis Does What Nintendon’t,” and stuff, it was almost like I was predisposed to hate Sonic and everything that he stood for back in the day. How dare that stupid blue, red sneaker wearing, finger waving hedgehog say such bad things about my beloved Mario and my beloved Nintendo systems! How dare he!
But I had a next door neighbourhood friend who owned a Genesis back then and I got the chance to try the console out along with Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2 with him, and I remember just being absolutely floored with how good and how incredibly fast that these games played back then! I never quite experienced anything like that on a Nintendo console before. (Let’s just say that I was a bit jealous back then.) Sega definitely had something good there with Sonic, and I kind of grew to accept the little guy.
Although I will always prefer Mario over Sonic in terms of his actual games and overall content, I think Sonic has a better characterization to him compared to Mario overall. He just seems more likeable as a character and more identifiable than Mario is. Hell, even some of his older cartoons, such as Adventures and SatAM, I prefer to watch a hell of a lot more than any of Mario’s older cartoons. (Sonic did always have the best cartoons growing up.)
And all of the Sonic games that I’ve played thus far (although I haven’t played them all, including any of the 3D ones) have been great. Sonic 2 is still one of my favorite platforming games of all time and the last couple that I’ve played (Sonic Advance and Sonic 4) aren’t too shabby either. Sometimes I just don’t fully understand (well, besides Sonic Boom and Sonic ’06) why some of the fanbase just hates him so much and think that the series has gone way downhill still the good ol’ days. I think it’s a bit silly, personally.
I like both characters in the end, but I still prefer Mario over Sonic as a whole. Sonic definitely has his place among gaming’s elite, but Mario and Nintendo is still where the heart is. (Although, Sonic, you’re not half that bad yourself.) ^^
Hey, what about this one:
...A timeless classic. :D
(Although I’m kind of a bit upset still that they got rid of that quote for him in the newest Smash Bros. game. It was one of the best things about him!)

Was looking forward to maining Sonic solely to abuse the awesome taunts he previously had in the new SSB until I found out they replaced that with something else. :( R.I.P.
But ironically to make up for that, he’s one of the best characters in the game to use…better than Mario.

Kirby can't win. He isn't part of the topic.
Chuck Norris also won a popularity contest for a fact generator despite not being nominated.
Sonic is what got me into gaming and was a part of my childhood. Regardless, the only bad Mario games came from third party developers who had no idea on how to make fun games, and they are so few to count, whereas SEGA has proven (to me, at least) that they don't know what to do with Sonic anymore, so Mario wins at that, and also wins at maintaining a relatively consistent identity throughout the years, where Sonic kept trying to go further and further into realistic, dramatic, and "edgy" territory and failed miserably. At least Sonic's starting to return to his roots a bit more (minus Sonic Boom).

I was just asking about what everyone here liked about them most in general, whether it be their games, them as a character, both, etc. I think all of the different reasons given here have definitely been pretty good and interesting.
Personally though, I completely disagree with the Kirby thing. I've found him to be such a pushover opponent in the Super Smash Bros. series, not to mention the fact that his games are completely easy (at times, enjoyable, but still easy). The Mario series has gotten easier over the years, but his older games are something to keep you busy for the next decade of your life.
As for Sonic..... I've never really gotten into his games. I've played a few when I was younger, and the only one that really stuck out to me was one I'd played over a relatives' house, and the only reason I remembered it was because of Tails (in a child's mind, the cute, little, flying foxy!). I own the Sonic's Sega Collection on Xbox 360, and I wind up finding myself playing games like Golden Axe and Shining Force, rather than Sonic.

Smash Bros. limits his true capabilities that he demonstrates in the games. Kirby is a remorseless, over-powered blob of doom with very situational weaknesses.

The game itself was mediocre enough, but hearing "Where's that DAMN 4th Chaos Emerald" seriously just made me both laugh my ass off and groan loudly at the same time. I completely gave up on the series until Unleashed showed up and surprised me with shockingly... enjoyable 3D gameplay (minus the werehog levels, of course).
