WHICH CASTLEVANIA GAME IS YOUR FAVORITE?

From it's humble beginnings to now, which Castlevania game did you find the most enjoyable to play? Share all that you'd like to about it here!

Out of all the ones that I've played so far, I'd say that Aria of Sorrow is my favorite.

The story was interesting. It had a kind of 'Who Dun It?' feel (to make a comparison), that I found to be enjoyably tense.
Then, when I lost on my first fight against the final boss and they showed me the bad ending, I was impressed. It was one of the first games that I'd seen threaten me with something terrible, then actually deliver on it.

The Metroidvania era for Castlevania has been a great one for the series, or so I think, but adding the ability to capture, and utilize, souls was simply awesome. Traveling around the castle to find every monster felt a bit like trying to collect Pokemon! In a more fatal manner.

I also found Soma Cruz to be an interesting main character, because, considering his background before the events of the game, he's so ordinary compared to the series' other leads. Then, of course, what you find out in game adds to his interest value.

The inside of Dracula's Castle was looking as good as ever (he's such an amazing decorator!), and the music was, in my opinion, at it's best. Castlevania has always had some good music, but the soundtrack to this one really appealed to me.

As much as I'd liked the series iconic title, 'Symphony of the Night', I'm going to have to say that it runs a close second. A lot about that game was pretty awesome, but Aria of Sorrow swept me away.

It's a bit heartbreaking that I didn't find Dawn of Sorrow to be as appealing.
The very first one, as that's the only one I've played significantly (I also rented Castlevania IV for the SNES once, and as I remember it was fun enough). It wasn't as much fun as other platformers of its ilk I played at the time, like DuckTales or Kid Icarus. I remember it being hard. Castlevania IV was the last one I played.

My favorites are the original Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV, Symphony of the Night, and Order of Ecclesia. Aria of Sorrow's not bad either ^_^

I've only really played the original, but from what I've seen the third has some of the best graphics and music on the NES. That game always seemed super cool.

I tried playing Symphony of the Night and hated it.

I've played the original (I sucked really hard at it), probably the sequel, Super Castlevania IV, Dracula X, Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Lament of Innocence, Lords of Darkness, and it's sequel.

My favorite is probably Symphony of the Night, closely followed by Aria of Sorrow. Though, the original Lords of Shadow was really cool. Lords of Shadow 2 was okay, but I wasn't a huge fan of the sneaking sequences.

I recently played the original Castlevania and loved it. I never got past Death since I played it at a friends place and we were only prepared to torture ourselves for so long before something got broken.

The other games I played were Super Castlevania IV, Aria of Sorrow, Circle of the Moon, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. While I loved them all to death, I would probably have to give the 1st prize to Order of Ecclesia, with Portrait of Ruin being a close second, and the original being a close third.

I've played the first one, the third one, and number 4. Four was the best one. Didn't beat three.

The first one was good for it's time and still holds up. Three would have blown my balls off if I had played it on an actual NES back in the day. The graphics, music, and level design were head and shoulders above the first game: Everything a good sequel should be. Complete with the difficulty.

The fourth one delivered on the most important aspect the original castlevanias were lacking: The atmosphere. That's what sells the game and that's why it's the best one. I hear Symphony of the Night is good but from what I've seen it has a very different style going on, and deviated tonally from it's gothic horror movie inspiration.

I grew up with three, so that's got some serious nostalgia points going for it (that and it's just a good game in general). I've played Castlevania 64 through practically to the end 100% legit (I hauled ass so hard I've still got to fight Dragon Dracula for the good ending, but he's a bitch), which makes it the only Castlevania game I've ever beaten without cheats.

So yeah, in terms of "would play again", it'd have to be 64; but for a fun little romp just to see how far I can get for shits, I'd side with three. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot about Castlevania 64 that one has to get used to/muscle through in order to actually play the game (and even then it's still hard as balls), but I don't really see why it's the black sheep of the family.
Castlevania has been one of my favorite series since childhood :D

Castlevania: I still can't beat this game the legit way. Fun for a quick pick-up and play session but dated.

Simon's Quest: Played it a lot as a kid. It's an open world epic ahead of its time, but some of the tasks were impossible to figure out without Nintendo Power's tips.

Dracula's Curse: Very well-designed and still stands up today. One of my favorites.

Super Castlevania IV: It's a great entry in the series but I found that it becomes less fun the older it gets. I love the atmosphere in this game.

Dracula X: I like it about as much as the first NES game. It's best not to think that it's a lamentable port of Rondo of Blood.

Bloodlines: A great game for the Megadrive. Still enjoyable today and full of interesting gimmicks.

Castlevania Adventure: I can't stand the awful controls.

Belmont's Revenge: Played a lot as a kid. This one is very well designed too. One of my favorite Game Boy games.

Castlevania Legends: It's okay but I wanted this game to be so much better considering it was originally intended to be the first game in the timeline and starred a female Belmont for once.

Symphony of the Night: A great entry in the series and the most famous one. It made huge steps in redefining what the Action RPG genre could be. Another favorite although after having spent 300+ hours in it and done all kinds of crazy stuff and challenges I don't really feel like playing it anymore.

Circle of the Moon: In my opinion the best GBA Castlevania. Provides excellent challenge and great fun.

Harmony of Dissonance: Probably one of the worst entries in the series for numerous reasons.

Aria of Sorrow: Great the first time through but after having 100%ed it I began to find it boring.

Dawn of Sorrow: I liked it less than Aria of Sorrow. A lot of enemies, features and moments were just meh to me.

Portrait of Ruin: I was disappointed that Charlotte is so much weaker and less useful than Jonathan, but most of the level design is excellent in this title.

Order of Ecclesia: The first half of the game is amazing and has lots of fresh ideas. It gets repetitive in the second half though, and Dracula's Castle is just awful.

Lament of Innocence: The most satisfying whip mechanics I've ever witnessed. This one is probably my favorite game in the series so far even if I think it has more flaws than SotN. I love the freedom you have in exploring the castle and the story and characters are excellent.

Curse of Darkness: The crafting system is great and the combo/finishers are fun, but the execution of several other features is poor.

I haven't played the other titles enough to make an opinion about them, but I suppose that Rondo of Blood could become one of my favorites.

Super CV 4 is the best but I suck at it. :(

My favorites that I can play are CV2 and SotN. I cannot defend my love of the former; I know it is crap, but I still love just about everything about it.

I have a kind of negative view of a lot of the recent stuff; IMO, Castlevania should always be a 2D platformy game with a Belmont wielding a whip and fighting Dracula. All this other nonsense with pale boys with swords is taking out a lot of what made it cool when it first came out, dammit!
I'm a bit out of the norm myself, in that I had so much fun playing CV2 on the NES more so than any of the other titles. Sometime back there was a fan remake of it called Castlevania 2 Revamped, with graphics on par with the SNES and added boss fights to the mansions, and it made it much more worthwhile to play.
Aria of Sorrow. It might be because it's the only one I ever played, but I loved the Soul System which encouraged you to find good ways to beat the many foes (though I think the Sky Fish was not very nice about it) and also allowed you to mix and match your moveset.
All the NES ones,And Super Castlevania IV..and Belmont's Revenge. That's it!?
Symphony of the Night. I feel there's really no topping it.
Yeah, I'm with Feld on this one. Symphony of the Night was outstanding. Some of the GBA/DS ones were also pretty solid.

I'd love to see a SotN metroidvania style with controls like SCV4. It'd be so boss to swing around on a whip to get to places and all.

Ayyyy

I guess objectively-speaking SOTN is the best one, but I'll always have a soft spot for Ecclesia. A pretty moody game (esp. the twist leading to the castle) but I appreciated how it isn't confined to, well, the one castle.
