Are you a Legend of Zelda veteran? Or a newbie, who cares lets discuss it! I'll start the conversation.

So I finished Skyward Sword last Friday. If you seen any of my other posts, Its clear that I don't like the game much. Well I actually sit down and played it, and I still didn't like it. I still think its a disappointment, for many many reasons. And I'v got my fingers crossed big time for Zelda Wii U. I hope they don't mess it up. As for Majora's Mask 3D. Has anyone played it? If so, is it as good as the original? I myself have been kinda of passing it off, making the game easier just makes me feel like they were afraid no one beat it or something and its kinda of causing me not to buy it due to that reason and I haven't even beaten the original yet due to lack of motivation, is it easier?. That's my wood for the fire, lets throw more into it!
I haven't bought Majora's Mask 3DS cos' I have the N64 one lying in my house and I still haven't beat it. I'm a terrible Hero of Time.

I actually really liked Skyward Sword, even though everyone seems to say it was one of the worst of the series.

Maybe I don't remember the puzzles all that much, but using the WiiMote and nunchuk like a Sword and Shield, as well as pulling the bow and arrow...
I LOOOOVED IT. SCHWING SCHWING SCHWIIING!

That's actually my main like and dislike with skyward sword, it barely worked for me sometimes, but when it did (which thankfully was most of the time) it was extremely fun. I don't think its absolutely horrible, because there are some things I do like. The dungeons are cool, and the story is pretty good as well and them graphics and music its like having an eye and eargasm. But the padding in the story, and the controls that can be bothersome added up for me. When I said I don't like it, I should have said its more of a like/Dislike. One minute I'm having a blast next I'm wanting to pull my hair out. Probably the only game I played where I Like/Dislike it.

The last zelda game i played was phantom hourglass for the DS. I bought spirit track but the cartridge came busted and wouldn't load the rom, and i couldn't play skyward sword because my last wiimote broke.

I'd wish i had a 3DS to play a link between worlds because from what i've heard about the game it is pretty fantastic. I'm not getting either a 3DS or a wiiU though so i'm going to miss out on the new zelda that's coming out for the latter.
I beat Link Between Worlds in a week and... I didn't enjoy it that much.

Being able to buy all the tools just... takes out of the wonderment for me.

I really like the suspense of finding them. "Oh boy, what tool is this?" And finding out how to use them in the following situation.
Link's Awakening and Link to the Past are still my definite faves. Played through the former a TON when I was a kid and still do every once in a while. Just has that charm to it.

I think the only main series Zelda games I haven't beaten are Majora's Mask, Oracle of Ages, Link's Awakening, Zelda II and those godawful DS games. I don't really consider the Four Swords GC thing a main series title, but I have played the GBC one that came on LttP.

My favourite of the series is Link to the Past. Twilight Princess, The Original, Oracle of Seasons, Wind Waker and Link Between Worlds are up there as well. Unlike a lot of modern Zelda fans I don't like Ocarina of Time all that much, and for similar reasons I've never gotten into Majora's Mask, although I might pick up the 3D version soon and check it out. I've always thought the N64 era was horrendously over-rated.

I always thought the series worked a lot better in a 2D/Top Down perspective. The 3D games have largely been kind of shaky for me- I only think the aforementioned Twilight Princess and Wind Waker really got it absolutely right on the 3D front.

Skyward Sword is abysmal. The story and the whole concept of making the game the "origin story" of Zelda (concept wise, not execution wise) is great, the art is nice, but the gameplay is easily the worst in the series (okay, maybe not worse than the DS games, sort of hard to tell). TP got the Wiimote-Sword right, in that it gave the player the feel of swinging a sword but still kept the 3D Zelda traditions of button/stick combos being used to change up sword moves.

It blended the two really well, whereas Skyward Sword relies too heavily on a level of precision that the technology of the Wiimote/Motion Plus isn't capable of achieving, and requires that the player meet it nigh exactly. It makes the game a humongous chore to play because you pretty much never get the swings right on your first go- every enemy becomes less of an action/strategy situation and more of a game of rock paper scissors for snails. The Ghirahim boss fights stand out in my mind as one of the least fun moments of the whole series. When you combine this plodding, frustrating core with a creepingly slow story filled with cutscenes at every turn it just makes for an extremely annoying game.

I would definitely say that Twilight Princess is about the peak level of story that should be in a Zelda game, if you want it to work properly anyways.

Link Between Worlds however was a great breath of fresh air, returning to the more open world/lightly handed story approach that Link to the Past and The Original used. Being able to tackle the dungeons in any order was fun, and so natural that I didn't even realize I was doing them out of order until after I beat the game and read about it. It was awesome of a Zelda game to give the player that much freedom again after linearity pretty much became a series tradition. I think they're doing the same kind of thing in Zelda U, which is why I'm so excited for it, I really want to see how that formula works in a 3D Zelda.

Damn, now I want to play a Zelda game.

There's a Zelda game on this website that's got GB graphics that looked pretty good.

I wish that I could collect all my thoughts on the Zelda series into a neat little essay because there's so much to talk about. But for now I'll just say this thread makes me regret missing the SGDQ run of Twilight Princess.

Skyward Sword is not a bad game but I still didn't like it. And not because of the Wiimote controls, which I liked and worked perfectly for me. It goes against a lot of what makes Zelda fun in the way that its designed. If they had just slapped any other name on it than "Zelda" it would not get as much hate as it gets.

Majora's Mask is the best because it managed to do all the story and character building that SS wanted to do in a much more natural way and its fun to go spelunking in creepy tombs that make your skin crawl, which later games seem to have forgetten how to do.

LTTP is probably my favorite because childhood nostalgia blah blah blah. It was the next logical step from the first Zelda and was better in nearly every way. Best sequel, for sure. Link Between Worlds is only third best sequel. Prequel? Whatever.
Link's Awakening is sort of the Zelda game I have the most memories of. I mean obviously Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 were also big parts of my life but I actually bought Link's Awakening for my own moneys and essentially spent a summer playing it.

Zelda 2 also had a profound impact on me, mostly I think because it introduced me to grinding. I was so bad at that game that I essentially spent most of my time trying to go up in level so I could beat some of the harder stuff and still failing to do so. With a guide I eventually beat Zelda 1.

But Link's Awakening. In my memories that game has some of the most touching moments I've ever had in games. I played it at a time when my English was rudimentary at best. (There was a hint system in the game and half the time I had no idea what the guy was talking about) But I remember a scene when you are sitting on a log with a girl, watching seagulls and she's monologuing (because Link never says anything). I felt that moment somehow (I also really love the Ballad of the Wind Fish. It's such a beautiful tune. Just as a by the way) and I understood that by beating the game I might destroy all that I had just played through (spoiler by the way).

So mostly thinking back I really feel that ending of Awakening. It's sad in a way that... I don't know... I've not seen very often in games.

These are my memories of said game. I'm not sure what it'd be like if I revisited it. But it's an old favourite of mine. Especially whenever I think about "game moments that have moved me". That log scene just is there somewhere.
I started with 3D, so my standards are that from 3D and what I seek from it as well.
I did enjoy the Minish Cap a whole lot, but it will never be the classical Zelda formula in my mind.
The DS games are a worse pain to play than trying to play the flute with my feet. So I can't say much about them.

Majora's Mask is my favorite, although Twilight Princess does an excellent job on all fronts (it is only perhaps a little bit too easy to get all hearts)
Majora's Mask has such a dark metaphorical layer to it, great story-building and a very handy mechanic at its root. I did not use the time slow-down (or just at the very end) in my first playthrough, which made for an actual race against time.
Not to mention masks and shape-shifting and many many fun times to be had.

Combat has never been the focus for me. And if we are talking combat, then yes, it sucks for the most part. (shielding and waiting being a common thing).

I found The Wind Waker downright a horrible experience. I did not enjoy sailing, I did not enjoy the environment, nor the art style, and it simply didn't pull of a "zelda feeling" or atmosphere for me.
I can see it being liked, and having solid ground.
But this ground was not for me to tread on. I actually stopped right before the ending of the game, because I couldn't muster the willpower to spend more time on the sea searching for the triforce maps.
Twilight Princess is ambien in the form of a game. Every time I play it I have to make sure I'm 100% alert or I will lose focus and hit the floor from being bored too much. The whole game is so gloomy and depressing just looking at it makes me want to put a gun to my mouth to at least remind myself that my life has some meaning. The game even opens up with some dude next to a lake talking to Link, exciting huh? Then after meeting the cast of The Hills Have Eyes you think you're in for some fun hyrule adventure. Then "that" happens and you wish you were playing Okami instead. Fuck the wolf sections.

I would have said "Worst Mini-Games/Most Dependant on Mini-Games to Progress"

Fuck the Goron Race, and fuck them for keeping in the shitty Gerudo stealth BS from OoT.

*I know the Goron Race isn't technically necessary, but come on, who doesn't get the Gilded Sword?

Minish Cap - Worst Gimmick

I actually enjoyed the Minish-Mode a lot. Unless you're referring to the Keystones, in which case I agree 100%. I think the Minish Mode gave the entire game this really neat fairy tale feel with the Minish people building houses out of everyday objects/in everyday places, and I thought it was a good way to promote exploration of the world. In fact, Minish Cap is really fun to explore in general, with stuff like the Cane of Pacci and the Mole Mitts.

Twilight Princess - Least Challenging / Most Disappointing Combat

I would agree on the difficulty, but I found the combat in Twilight Princess to be pretty enjoyable myself. Not for any particular reason I guess, I just felt as though it was more fluid and quick than the other 3D games before it.

If you want a good challenge, try playing the game with only 3 hearts and always wear the Zora Tunic after you get it, because it makes you weak to Fire and Ice. Just imagine- everything in the Ice Temple kills you in a single hit. I found doing that made the game really enjoyable.

I was originally going to put "Worst Opening Sequence" because it drags on for a full 3 day cycle before you can actually get the game going. But its mostly there for building atmosphere and setting the tone. And it does it very well, and not in an obtrusive way that I found annoying. Skyward Sword did. With all the dialogue.

Worst minigames might go to the Oracle series for the dancing. But I really like minigames so I'm a bit too biased to make that call. :<

Actually no. Worst minigames are Skyward Sword because I distinctly remember not enjoying or remembering any of 'em.

Majora's Mask has a lot great, maybe even brilliant ideas but I feel like the game didn't quite come together as a whole. Still, it was ambitious.
Okami is the best 3d zelda

But Majora's Mask writing and atmosphere is the best of the series when the best I can say about the rest is "Groose is p.cool"

I love the dark and depressing atmosphere around Majora's Mask, and yea, the experimental mechanics behind it are fantastic. I would really love to see some sort of roguelike designed around looping time backwards, groundhog-day style...

I also really liked Link's Awakening. It's also a tad darker and feels very mysterious compared to other Zelda games. Honestly, I don't really care about plotlines regarding Zelda and Link, or the plot twists where mid-level baddies like Aghanim or Zant are summoning Ganon. I think the series shines when it leaves Link as a blank slate, keeps the plot bare-bones, and instead focuses on building a strange world full of darkness and mystery and weird characters. What do you all think?

I went and bought Majora's Mask 3D today because of this thread.

Hopefully this goes better than the last time I tried MM!
