NEW TO VX ACE!

Hi all, I'm a brand newbie to RPG Maker and this forum.

Essentially I guess I'm a writer. A die-hard Tolkien fan (hence the username), I self-published my first fantasy novella a few years ago on kindle, and it sold a few dozen copies (real life always got in the way so I never promoted it at all).

I'm now outlining my first RPG story, and have been wondering with which engine I should bring it to life. I downloaded and tinkered with Unity and UE4 for a bit, but quickly realised the learning curves are horrendous - I want to get to the story asap rather than learn to program. I stumbled across RPG Maker VX Ace and it fits the bill perfectly! I have been ploughing through the tutorials - it's great to get to grips with the basics and I'm excited about what I can do with it.

There's some decent fantasy art bundles on rpgmaker's website, so I'm planning to buy in some stock graphics from there, but does anyone know anything about collaborations with artists for RPG Maker VX Ace? The artist I originally collaborated with for illustrations is firmly in the realms of pencil and paper only.

I'm British medieval fantasy / Middle Earth / Dungeons and Dragons to the core, and for anyone vaguely interested, I've shared my book for free now here:

(like all aspiring writers, any comments would be wildly appreciated!)

cheers all

Seeing you want a game fast since you already have a grasp on story a lot of artists doing tiles would want compensation for doing an entire game but for a first game if your willing to put down a couple of bucks to get the high fantasy packs which fit what you like.

(There are more then I linked just look at the similar titles thing and they should be there. There is at least two more)
Then maybe you could fit your story in or even make up something new to get a feel for rpg maker and not have to worry about graphics and what not as those packs together have quite a bit of stuff piled it.
Thanks for this charblar - those high fantasy packs are loaded with a ton of decent graphics. The steam ones seem to be the same as the ones I'd come across on RPGMaker's own website:

I'm expecting the vast majority of my graphical requirements will be covered by the bundle, and 50 bucks for HF1 & HF2 & the deep seems quite the bargain! So I certainly don't intend commissioning tiles/graphics for an entire game (I'm guessing that is big $$$ bucks and I'm not that rich!)

But I'm thinking it would be great to have custom character face portraits for 4 or 5 lead characters, rather than using the generic plastic-CGI ones from the bundle.

I'm ordering the bundle today, so we shall see.

Thanks again

~John
Do you have plans regarding player interaction? I think it's this one element that makes telling stories in games that much different from a written story, a movie, a stageplay and so on. I did play a few games with a legitimately interesting story that I couldn't finish due to unbearable gameplay (and rarely, vice versa).
That's an interesting one I'm still grappling with LightningLord2.
I guess this project will decide whether I'm actually just a story writer or a game builder. Although I'm aware that fleshing out interesting characters with a plot-heavy story line doth not a good game make so I reckon there's still hope for me.

From my initial tinkerings with the VXAce engine I'm hopeful my graphical skills are up to scratch with regard to creating compelling locations that you want to explore.

onwards and upwards...
