[MOVIE] RUSH HOUR 3

In an effort to get discussion going on RMN, I am starting new topics in new topic areas such as movies.

I saw a prescreening of Rush Hour 3 on Wednesday last week (for free!). I enjoy martial arts movies and comedies in general, and Jackie Chan in particular, so I may be a bit more forgiving than the average movie-goer.

3/5 stars

Watch it now!
Wait for the cheap theaters
>> Rent it
Watch when in comes on TV in a few years
Avoid at all costs

Rush Hour 3 is the latest movie from Jackie Chan and (the slightly chubbier) Chris Tucker. It's funnier than the previous two movies (which I also watched recently on TBS) but a little lighter on the action. In fact, I think Chris Tucker had more fight scenes that Jackie Chan in this one. So a big boo-urns to that.

This story revolves around the hunt by the World Court for the list of leaders of the Triads - the "bad guys" from the first two movies. That hunt leads them to Paris (where the sexy informant lives) where they find the list and save the girl.

The funniest scene involves a back and forth conversation between Master Yu and Tucker - a total ripoff of the "Who's on first" gag, but hilarious nonetheless.

Some of the non-action scenes feel really forced, especially any scenes with the (now older) Soo Yung (sp?). She seems a decent actor, but the emotion she puts into her scenes seem completely out of place in this action-comedy.

The movie ends with an okay sword fight on the Eiffel Tower and a crazy stunt involving the French flag. Which is weird, because 4 gunmen are still left in the tower when the movie ends. What happened to them, and did Soo Yung get away? We can assume so because Jackie and Tucker are dancing in the streets to "War - What is it good for?" I suppose.

Bottom line is, this movie is entertaining and worth a rental. If you have free tickets, by all means go!
I love Rush Hour 2. I'm actually an enormous Jackie Chan fan! I have a soft spot for movies like Shanghai Noon/Knights and Rush Hour. I haven't liked Jackie Chan's original movies very much (the Asian ones with English dubs), but his US stuff is pretty decent.

I don't go to the movie theater much, though. Not only is it expensive, but, invariably, I end up ordering lots of junk food and feeling fat for the next three days. Not cool. I think that my girlfriend's mom takes me to movies much more often than I take myself, actually.

Anyway!

It's cool that they made another Rush Hour. I'll definitely want to rent it some day. Thanks for the heads up!
I just read various reviews via Metacritic and I have to say, I'm very disappointed with what they've and you've said. Rush Hour 1 and 2 were great comedy action movies involving my favourite martial arts actor of all time and I was actually shocked they made another one.

Can you expand on the "tubbier" Chris? Has he gained weight or is he hench or something?
His cheeks and neck are thicker than in the first two - it's actually quite noticable. I heard several people comment on it when they left the theater. Maybe he started to work out or something? I don't know.

I haven't actually read any reviews about Rush Hour 3 yet. What did they say?

Well read them yourselves.

The one that really made me think this movie must be crap was this comment

The biggest loser in all of this is Chan, whose legacy over here won't be his 20+ years as a martial arts pioneer, but rather his playing straight man to the likes of Tucker and Owen Wilson.

I disagree about him starring in Shanghai Noon though, I liked the cowboy image of Jackie. ;D

Mind you, I'll probably get it when it comes to DVD...
I saw it in theaters. It wasn't a terrible movie.

The action scenes were to a level expectable from the first two movies. The jokes, while funny, were typical American humor. Racial, and mock pop-culture.

The only disappointment I had with this movie was the ending. Not to give away any spoilers, it simply ended too suddenly. It was almost like the writers said "Okay, we're out of jokes. Wrap it up!"
Kentona how'd you get a free screening? That's awesome

For me when a movie like Rough Hour comes out I usually wait for the DVD. But I liked the other 2 movies with their decent fighting and comedic scenes. So I am looking forward to this movie being a good rental.
I love the Rush Hours. I will love this one when I see it.

A friend of a friend works at the local paper - they were giving out free prescreening tickets for Rush Hour 3 in an attempt to fill the theater (they did, plus they had to turn away 30 people). It was put on in conjunction with a local radio station. After the movie, a reporter was getting quotes and thoughts from people who saw the movie. I assume he was writing a review for it, but I cannot be certain.

I did learn that they do this like 3 times a month, so, if I am lucky I won't have to pay for a movie again! (I doubt it, though...)
