What type of game is that last screenshot used for? The pixel world with the pizza sign?
It's not being used for a game, it's just my Twitter/Facebook header image. It was designed with sidescrolling/platforming aspects in mind though.

Well, if you're looking to make a sidescrolling game like that, then I guess I'd recommend Unity 2D or Game Maker, perhaps? Construct 2 can also work for it, if you'd prefer something more similar to RPG Makers toolkit. There's also Construct Classic, which is similar to 2, but free.
I'm not a huge authority on it, but that would be my advice. I've only used Construct 2 myself, and while it's not excellent it'll get the job done.

Pizza has been doing those portraits for my Trash Game, and he's being doing a tremendous job. Highly recommend.
