WHY (GOD WHY) SO MANY MEDIEVAL FANTASY GAMES AND SO LITTLE OF ANYTHING ELSE?

Posts

I'd just like to point out that there are actually a great deal of sci-fi RM games out there, they just aren't in English. The Japanese communities actually have tons of games that are sci-fi, or something else different than medieval fantasy. They are pretty big communities that have what you want, the problem is it's in another language.

Honestly I think the reason there are less sci-fi games is because of the RTP. Most of the resources floating around are either custom made for a medieval fantasy setting or ripped from SNES games, which are ALSO mostly medieval fantasy settings.

There are lots of sci-fi/modern resources for rm2k/2k3, maybe just because they've been around forever. It's one reason I'm still tied to these makers. There are very few of these resources for XP (Knight-Blade and that's it), and none for VX. I hope to see a lot more in the coming years.

I'd love to see these games just so our community could have these resources to work with. Assuming they're public domain/rips, of course, I don't want to jack someone's custom stuff.

I'm pretty sure that they're not rips. I remember Neophyte or somebody else who frequents foreign forums mentioning something about Japanese not liking rips because of the honor of making graphics, etc.

I was going to bring up under-aged Olympians as a clever retort but then I realized that those were Chinese.
There's also the issue of them living in the country where most of those rips came from.
maybe everybody does midieval because alot of people with rpg maker have played either chrono trigger or final fantasy VII,breath of fire, etc. Plus swords and magic.........is a good combination. at one point i was thinking about using a future setting, but maybe later.

Wohoo. Cat fight. ;D ::Grabs popcorn.::

Sorry, but this is just such bullshit. The prototypical Japanese Videogame RPG is Final Fantasy, which stole EVERYTHING, EVEN ITS BASIC CONCEPT, FROM THE AMERICAN PNP RPG DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. While admittedly msr. Gygax stole from anything from everything, the Japanese did not invent bolt, potion, or random encounters. Give me a break.

Yeah? I never said I'm not making an RPG.

I said I'm not going to use Japanese jokes, themes, language.. etc.
Over the course of the past 5 years I think I've played about 15 gigs of RPGMaker games.
And I'd say that Sci-Fi games were actually probably the most common type.

I'm sick of RPGMaker games now, though, I don't play them anymore, except for a few random gems.

Also, I've been meaning to play Barkley, but I haven't gotten around to it yet...

It's true, most of the games are either RTP, or have some sort of custom thing going for them. They don't get caught up in graphics like the us and the German communities do, at least not as much from what I've seen. They tend to focus on more unique aspects(a custom battle system, among other things) in a game.

I'll see if I can find some games that you can check out, though.
Japanese people approve of fangames, that's why doujin games are abundant as well. *points melty blood*

People like fantasy because of "
chrono trigger or final fantasy VII
"

nonononononono.

Chrono Trigger: TIME TRAVEL = SCIENCE FICTION LOL.
Final Fantasy VII is CYBERPUNK WITH MAGIC! IT HAS ROBOTS AND SPACESHIPS. WTF. WRONG.

Cyberpunk? It was extremely not cyberpunk. Industrialpunk maybe.

Chrono Trigger ran the gamut, but it had periods where it was medieval High Fantasy, periods where it was Magitek Urban Fantasy-ish, and periods where it was prehistoric fantasy.

...but it was always fantasy. Magic or gods always makes something fantasy. The only exception is when the gods are Sufficiently Advanced Aliens. Even psionics run the chance of making a sci-fi into fantasy--the difference between Psionics and Magical Realism is pretty much imaginary. Like the difference between sufficiently advanced technology and magic, or sufficiently advanced magic and technology.

It was so cyberpunk. It had biotech enhancements (SOLDIER), robots, helicopters, industrial espionage, smartguns, lasers. It's a logical continuation of the distinctly steampunk setting of FF6. It wasn't typical cyberpunk, but it's closer to cyberpunk than dieselpunk, industrial, or anything else you want to call it.

My initial interest in FFVII was due to its resemblance to Shadowrun (SNES game/pen and paper RPG).
Playing games other than RPGs is the best remedy to this problem, and one of the best ways to make a great RPG.

I'm serious, though. Good advice is good advice.

Are you serious? Subcategories are so lame. Who defines cyberpunk, industrialpunk, or Winnebagopunk?

I know that subcategories are stupid (is that post-hardcore or screamo?) but they do exist. They weren't the point of this topic, though.

I <3 winebagopunk.
Besides going to hell, the mods are cleaning up some of the shitter posts (the quote-only replies)

Also more Wild West games would be cool.
