First image hosting service I used was ImageShack. It was the last one too, I received so much douchebaggery from it that I'm not going back to any image host ever again.
Now I leech from RMN's locker space because it's reliable, even for things that aren't for RMN usage. :^D. Or Dropbox. The public folder works like a charm.
Nowadays I actually don't know how do you watch images at ImageShack. Wasn't it transformed into a trap site?

it's kind of interesting seeing how basic services on the internet have been trying to monetize things
I used to store all my things on xieke, ohsk, or webgel -- but fire-and-forget bitbuckets like that have a habit of vanishing, and there's no way to get a good list of things you've already uploaded anyway. in terms of basic function, imgur is probably best, though iirc they have a habit of lowering the quality of your images if you don't have a registered account.

It's not that they lower the quality but that they sometimes change it to another file type (I think jpeg?). Thankfully, you can have as many accounts there as you have email addresses, and it works a bit like RMN in that the more points you have, the bigger your space.
(I recommend hitting up sites like tumblr/9gag/etc, finding funny posts there, compiling about 5-10 of them into a gallery and submitting it to imgur. They usually eat that shit up and give high points for it. Viola! Expanded room!)
I liked tinypic a lot, and you can always use deviantart for original works or banners. Dropbox is also good, and there are some forum sites out there that give you some space for uploading (not as great as RMN). But hey, lockers are there for a reason~
I'm also in the over 1GB club. Recently cleaned up a bit so got about 800+MB free. Wish we had folders or subsections, if only so I can order all the images in some way. I've taken to naming avatars with AVA_ at the start of the name and game images with the initials for them. Subsections would be niiiiiiice.

If it's about images I think the best option is postimg.org. As they don't delete old files(unless you delete it yourself.).
They also give you unlimited space, you can have albums and I never got any image corrupted(like upload a *.png image but they convert it to *.jpeg dropping the quality).
P.S. and everything is 100% free.

Imgur is awesome if you stick by it for three years, like there was a time i could only view 4 pages worth of my uploads at a time (but, they never got deleted, just taped back into memory, no embeds ever broke.) but when I'd been with them for three years I could view all my old stuff.

With Imgur, there's no reason to get anywhere else imho.
That is true of almost any image site at one point in its history, even ImageShack.
