THE IMPOSSIBLE GAMES THREAD

Posts

Pages: first 12 next last
You know, I felt that there should be a thread in honor of the games that we all just can't beat. It could be that we, personally, just stink at the games, or the game's developers just forgot, or chose not, to program the game in a way that allowed gamers to win.

There are tons of games out there that fit either, or both, descriptions, be them old or new. So, share all that you'd like to about it here!

These are the ones (that I can think of at the moment) that have made my personal list:

Friday the 13th(NES): This game panics the heck out of me. There's nothing like running around as a dumpy kid who can't even walk, and trying to stop Jason from murdering everyone. Then, when you get into the house, and the kids thank you, I immediately feel as if I've evolved into Super Wimp. Que death; Game is rigged. Time to move on.

Solstice(NES): Maybe it's the clumpy controls, I don't know, but this game seems impossible. Seriously, have any of you gotten far in this game? I think the only artifact that I've claimed have been the Magic Boots(Or, whatever they're called). I can jump higher, yay. Que death; Game is rigged. Time to move on.

Ghost and Goblins(All of them): Save the girl with a terribly slow guy, who doesn't at all speed up when his armor falls off, and he continues his quest in indecency. I think the biggest problem here is the unpredictability of the monsters. I have to say, I deep down have a lot of admiration for the programmers' creativity. Making the enemies do tons of things that manage to surprise each time you play it is amazing, but....... I think they got a little out of control with it. Also, I can't help but feel restricted and helpless in the face of the massive bosses that can leap, run, fly, shoot projectiles, explode, shoot lasers from their eyes, kill you instantly, etc.

Que death; Game is rigged. Time to move on.

Creature Shock(Sega Saturn): Okay, maybe it's just me, but this game doesn't make any sense. Stuff happens and alien things are everywhere. I don't think I need to even repeat the result.

Steamshovel Harry

Just to name a few.

Oh man! Those were hilarious! I was so confused about Steamshovel Harry until I realized the whole thing was meant to be a joke.

I will never forget Contra.
That Battletoads racing bike level still frustrates me just thinking about it.
Personally, Super Monkey Ball Expert mode at the moment. I just... can't move my thumb that delicately!

Can't say I've ever played a game that was literally unwinnable, except maybe some really bad freeware game that I've forgotten by now. I hear Exile 2's later game was nigh-unbeatable due to Working Design's tweaks (ironic company name there), and you basically had to just use contact damage boosts to get by enemies rather than fight them normally.

While there are a lot of bullet hells that probably fit the bill, the most notorious I can think of is Dodonpachi Daioujou: Death Label. It's basically a boss rush that you have to complete twice + an extra boss that's two final bosses next to each other. The real kicker is that the second round has to be completed on a single life. If I'm remembering this right, this replay is the first time anyone actually managed to beat the game, SEVEN YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE. I think only a small handful of people have managed it since then.

I just played this, it was great. The song was actually pretty good. Got it in my head.

"I can't wait to make love to Physiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiics"
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth.

It was a tactical RPG game for masochists. It was so ludicrously unfair with the player at a consistent disadvantage. Plus your characters died permanently whenever they'd fall in battle. You were also outnumbered by at least 3-1 on ever map.

FF4 DS's Zeromus boss battle. Impossible even with some grinding. I hate it. I hate that game. It's even worse than FF3 DS which I actually somehow, with some miracle, beat on the first try of the horribly designed final dungeon. I hate FF3-4 DS.
Goofy's Hysterical History Tour for Sega Genesis. It's mainly impossible because it's so bad and clunky. It was the only Genesis game I had growing up that I couldn't beat... and I eventually beat it one day in college, but had to use game genie. The ending was sooo not worth it, but it was the closure I needed at the time.

FF4 DS is the only version of FFIV that I've beaten.

but GOD did it have to back-asswards design ideas regarding "difficulty" spikes. And all of them (that I researched) were "new things" added to the DS version. And they were all just DUMB.
Yo, what about that underwater level in Turtles in Time?

Yo, what about that underwater level in Turtles in Time?

There was an underwater level in that game? I recently played it with my son multiple times (on Easy mode) and I don't remember an underwater level. It was iirc Big Apple 3 a.m. > New York streets > Sewer Surfing > Technodrome > Dinosaur level > Pirate ship level > Cowboy train level > Near Future hoverboard level > Spacestation level > Super Shredder boss fight
That one doesn't have an underwater level either afaik. Do you mean this one?

because in the PC port it was literally impossible due to a change in the timing/physics and you couldn't clear one jump in... level 4 I think? Here's a video of said literally impossible jump (with a bonus glitch you can take advantage of to skip the jump entirely)
Yeah the NES Turtles game with that damn underwater level. The game was even sort of fun before that. (Just like Battletoads! That game was fun too before doing crazy race)

Turtles II was fairly easy (I think we managed to beat it once without the Konami code)

Spacechem is difficult. I mean, sure I could youtube it but where's the fun in that. However you need to do lots of thinking to get anywhere.

haha u rite
I got redic good at that level when I was a kid, to the point where I could do it without taking damage (and that playing it again this year I still beat it first try (taking about half damage, of course))

Whatever happened to all of my free time?
