Whatever happened to all of my free time?

While there are a lot of bullet hells that probably fit the bill, the most notorious I can think of is Dodonpachi Daioujou: Death Label. It's basically a boss rush that you have to complete twice + an extra boss that's two final bosses next to each other. The real kicker is that the second round has to be completed on a single life. If I'm remembering this right, this replay is the first time anyone actually managed to beat the game, SEVEN YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE. I think only a small handful of people have managed it since then.

Wow, the projectiles there are a little...... superfluous. I don't play a lot of airplane battle games, but none of the few that I have played look anything like that. It makes me feel like a baby for thinking that Strikers 1945 was hard.

Goofy's Hysterical History Tour for Sega Genesis. It's mainly impossible because it's so bad and clunky. It was the only Genesis game I had growing up that I couldn't beat... and I eventually beat it one day in college, but had to use game genie. The ending was sooo not worth it, but it was the closure I needed at the time.

Hah, I can see where you would've been disappointed. I've never played that game, but that video shows me all that I need to know about it: Frustrating and pointless.

I think I felt the same way when I finally beat Beethoven's 2nd for SNES. And Trog for NES...... I don't know, I kind of wanted to see my dinosaurs chase the trogs away for good.

Yeah the NES Turtles game with that damn underwater level. The game was even sort of fun before that.

I think it's fun afterwards, too. It's just.... getting there. It's extremely difficult to not end up in a watery grave, even harder to win without losing a turtle, and virtually impossible to go to the next board without taking massive damage.

I think that programmers back then didn't want gamers to play a game and treat it like it was some Sunday afternoon walk. Even the cutesy kids' games were not allowed to be easy.
Iji is like this on "Reallyjoel's dad" Difficulty - even if you get past the ludicrous onslaught of enemies early on, you can't proceed to the next screen.

There's a computer game adaptation of I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream - the german version cuts one of the scenarios (due to taking place in a concentration camp), making it impossible to reach the ending in it.

Most games in Action 52 are so poorly programmed and partially unfinished that many of them become impossible at one point and others just don't proceed to an ending after a while.

I'd like to add Megaman X6 to this list?

I remember playing it a while back and rage-quitting early on; the only game out of the Megaman X series to do so. I've only managed to make it to one boss, the turtle reploid guy, and I can hardly witness a door to the boss room in the other stages due to the balls-hard level design. I remember fighting this curled dragon miniboss at the start of one stage, and I just couldn't get through it. I think I beat it after several tries, only to find ANOTHER dragon-bot to fight near the start. By then I was already depleted of health and just died.

Maybe I'll revisit it? It's the only game out of my Megaman X collection that I haven't beaten. :(
Funny, I found the first Mega Man to be difficult. I haven't really played it all that much, as it's not my absolute favorite side-scroller, but the last time I played it I think the most I did was made it to the boss. I think I'd chosen the Cut Man board. I wasn't lucky enough to get that far on the other boards, so I stuck with choosing that one mostly.

But, hey, I would definitely suggest banging your head against it again and again. That's the best part about owning an unbeatable game, as long as you don't frustrate the heck out of yourself. When you finally beat it though, it does make you feel pretty awesome.

That's a bit of something that shouldn't be overlooked on the programmers' part. I understand that mistakes happen, but those are majors errors there..... How could they be missed?

I guess there's nothing that can be done about that, but I do hate it when you find a game that's intriguing enough to keep your attention, only to find that there's some problem to prevent you from enjoying yourself anymore.

I've had these problems before, but usually not because of missing strings.
Somehow, my disks, and/or cartridges, malfunction, and sometimes they find a way to break. It seems that my Playstation and NES titles are the ones mostly affected by this.

I have no idea how I haven't heard of this. Wikipedia claims that it's notorious among gamers for being one of the worst games due to poor programming.

That's too bad for them. A Mario Party precursor would've undoubtedly become very popular during that time period.
I think on many versions (notably XP DosBox), Daggerfall was impossible, due to inability of the game to display events. And given the number of crazy random maps and game-breaking bugs, it's pretty hard to finish period.
There's a version of Action 52 for the Sega Genesis that's notably improved, but still rather bland. A few games were changed, too (of course, the game with the cool title song, Cheetahmen, is still there).
Seconding Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth. I stopped playing that game after the 4th map and a few levels of the randomly generated side tower. I dunno who designed that game, but they need to be shot.

The DS rerelease is actually playable though. They made the original PS1 difficulty hard mode, and made an easier difficulty normal mode.

Holy god.

Holy. GOD!

Like, who thought this was okay!? It's like the entire stage is taunting you with those donut things. I think I'll heed your advice.
Haha, I was just about to mention HideOfBeast's videos. I honestly recommend watching the others. Playing normally that stage isn't as much of a problem if you have the special weapons and/or Giga Attacks that hit the whole screen when charged. Metal Shark Player's weapon for X basically two-shots them from what I can remember.

Mega Man X6 was actually my first Mega Man game (rough start, no?), and honestly I'd consider it more obnoxious and tedious that impossible or even really hard. Granted, the difficulty depends largely on the stage and what weapons/parts/characters you have and also what Nightmare effects are in play. If you for whatever reason want to try the game again sometime (say maybe you really want to unlock Battle & Chase in the X Collection), start off with Commander Yammark and Shield Sheldon. Their stages are brief and relatively easy, as are the boss fights, and Yammark's weapon is really damn useful. Sheldon's stage also has a brief and sort-of easy Dynamo stage so you can get Zero, who's Zero Buster is really OP against bosses for some reason.
