TRYING OUT A NEW ENGINE

After years of using RPG Maker VX Ace I have sort of hit a space where I'm not very motivated to make games any more. I was thinking of waiting until MV got released to see what it was capable of.

But why waste all that time? I think it's time to try a new engine. After giving it some thought I thought Renpy would be an easy transition, since the engine looks simple enough for someone with a little experience to transition to.

I didn't want to try something too hard (Game Maker / Unity) but something challenging enough or different enough to give me some motivation to make a game.

What are your thoughts on going to Renpy? Will it be easy for someone like me or is there something better you think I could be doing?

I tried it too. Not really something you can just pick up and mess with, you do need to read some documentation as it's pretty different to the RM series.

I don't consider game maker to be that hard really. (Unless you want to make an RPG in it, then yes, it's super hard and buggy and tear jerking)

I actually fiddled around with Game Maker once, following a tutorial. I think I got a stick man I made in Gimp to move in 4 different directions by key board control after about 10+min of work.

I've managed to make a couple of solid games in it, but whenever i tried to make talk boxes i would just curl up and cry because nothing ever seemed to work. I had to copy a talk box system i found on the internet.

I'll never change. "Me" is better than your opinion, dummy!

Exactly this. Game maker is fine until you want dialogue then you have a crisis.

I've dabbled in it here and there. Never made anything with it I've been happy to release sans a little walk around scene for a webcomic I made years back. Though the pirate game wip I was working on had some promise.
Unity is evil. Remember that Star Trek: TNG episode about the puzzle game in an occulus rift that was brainwashing everyone? That's what Unity is.

Renpy seems simple enough for basic things:

Wow talk about dinner plate eyes.
Never tried renpy before. It's a programming language no?
Renpy uses Python, doesn't it?

Python is cool. I would definitely recommend Python.

Yes, it uses Python.
It's pretty basic for simple things, but does allow for some complexity if you know how to use it.
Definitely easier than Ruby or Java or even HTML

Here's a sample from my game so far:

I have actually spent more time trying to collect suitable graphics than having to worry about this scripting system.
