With all the talk about anime, I felt compelled to make this thread. While I generally don't like anime-esque products, there are some visual novels that really caught my attention lately! Especially Umineko. I was curious if anyone else on the forum was into it.

This is kind of random, but I noticed a lot of people misunderstand visual novels are games. Well, they aren't, really. Its no different from a picture book, except it uses a different medium.
I agree, and have argued from that platform before. I often rail against overemphasis on long cutscenes or huge blocks of text in video games, or even the assumption that video games should ever be focused more on story than gameplay--but Visual Novels are a different story. They're not games, even though they use similar User Interfaces and have interactive elements. I often make the argument that people who do take such an interest in telling stories over making games should be making visual novels instead.

That said, I don't think it's like a picture book either. Visual Novels are their own medium, and can utilize things picture books can't, like animation, music, and voice acting--all of which make a pretty big difference.

I suppose so, though it was more of a loose analogy if anything.
If you haven't yet, check out Ever 17 ~Out of Infinity~. It can be kinda inane at times, but its without a doubt my #1 favorite visual novel. It's about a group of kids who get trapped in a deep underwater marine park that's set to collapse in on itself in the next few days.

Tsukihime is another one of my fav's, though given its notoriety, I'm sure you've already seen it. I'm personally looking forward to reading Fate Stay Night once its completely translated, and have been quite dismayed to learn spoilers about it just from surfing the internet.

Also, its not a visual novel, but anyone who's a Haruhi fan would do very well to read the translated novels. There's a lot of things in the novels that are really glazed over or left un-explained in the anime.
I'm a Haruhi fan, but I never finished the light novels... Then again, I have the attention span of a strobe light when it comes to reading.
Anyway.

The only visual novel I've read is Narcissu, and I love it. Actually, I haven't heard of any others until now, so I'll check them out.
Description of Narcissu, from its site-

This is a story of disease and suffering; of medication and adverse effects; of thoracotomy scars and cellular poisons; of the living who cannot help but to die and of the dying who cannot help but to live; of a resting place other than "on 7F" or "at home".

This is a story of so many things.

But most of all ...

This is the story
of a girl whose heart was standing still
and a boy whose breath was being stolen away,
both of whom die.

I'm actually almost done with all the arcs in Tsukihime. Right now, I am playing Kohaku's. I wonder what the ending will be like.
