RMN has had Google Ads on its pages since like 2007 or something. I rolled with it because why not? Money, right? I use that money to buy games for prizes for events and the like (Second Saturday Scores, for example). I also have a rainy day fund set aside.
But anyway, what I wanted to ask was, what is your opinion on ads on RMN?
RMN runs on donors - this is what we rely on to pay the bills - but the ad moneys do help us purchase cool stuffs like Steam keys or games or engines or as gifts I've given to staff for being super-awesome. The point being that it's not like RMN will die without ads, but they are a nice perk.
Currently, RMN donors do not see ads. (as long as they've told me they've donated and I checked it off on their user profile) (also obviously they have to be logged in for the benefit)
I personally like having the extra revenue sources and having the rainy day fund. But I do know of the downside for ads - slower loading times/bandwidth, issues like that one that jeroen_sol mentioned today, clutter, etc...
On the topic of cashmoneys...
1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in thederelict RMN store?
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
6) what about nothing?
7) what about RMN just going full on MEGA and putting ADS EVERYWHERE with popup videos and pages where you have to watch an ad to get to the content you want, and ads between forum posts, and words in posts and articles being highlighted which link back to advertising pages, and massive banner ads, and covering download pages with false DOWNLOAD NOW!!! image ad links?*
Anywho, food for thought. plz respond.
*this is never going to happen on my watch.

We need to add a script that detects if the user has an adblocker and show a sad face to them and a message saying that ad revenue supports rmn and they are killing rmn and are a monster
@GreatRed Spirit: Or make the website unusable if you have adblock on like the escapist did for a while.
I wouldn't mind ads even if i wasn't a donor. When i browsed the site before donating i never found ads to be intrusive or bothersome, and there were no pop-up ads which i absolutely detest.

Which leads to a war of attrition with greasemonkey scripts and special adblock filters...
I've never found the ads her particularly bothersome but if you think Degica would be interested in buying ad space from us I'd at least ask them about it.

This is a COOL idea!
Hear me out,
Newgrounds has something similar, where if you have AdBlock enabled before watching a movie:

...This little reminder pops up!
So I disable AdBlock for Newgrounds cuz, Newgrounds is COOOL!
...You guys wanna be cool right?
You should do something like this! 8)

Irrelevant, seeing the sad face and message even once will be burned into their very soul and there's no greasemonkey script that can change that in their heart of hearts they know they are stealing bitfood from the mouth of rmn's server vm
(To be clear the suggestion was not serious, I only call our users monsters in the staff forums where nobody can see)
e: We aren't going to add any obtrusive ads or adblocker messages. That's the reason why a ton of users have adblocker to begin with (and obtrusive messages stuck).

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

I never had any problems with the ads before the ad platform got hacked, so I really don't mind them staying. I mean, rmn should take all the extra revenue it can get as long as it stays unintrusive. I really like the idea of the adspace being sold directly to Degica or people advertising their projects, as that also sounds a lot safer than using a giant ad platform. (That apparently has security issues)
The little message of "We see you're using adblocker and that makes us sad" would probably be great if it were put in the space where the ad normally goes, but certainly not as a popup. I think many people would be more than happy to allow ads on rmn but simply never think about allowing it, popups however make people annoyed.

1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
How often would you have to do a drive to totally replace the ad revenue? I don't think you could muster ankylo-calibre fundraising if it was scheduled every 2nd Friday.
2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
I used to frequent a Tactics Ogre forum. Because two of the main characters are named "Denim" and "Vice", we used to get S&M gear and fleshlight ads.
I don't know if that answers your question.
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
This sounds pretty cool. Do you have any ideas in mind for cost vs actual exposure? I might even be interested, if I ever finish my game.
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in the derelict RMN store?
Makes for an equally derelict link.
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
Advertising during a drive is awesome, but if you inundate people with a perpetual DONATE NOW button, they'll think you're always just fishing for an extra buck.
6) what about nothing?
I'm a donor, so I see nothing anyway. Of course, being a donor, what's my shitty opinion on ads worth?

The ads are interesting because they seem to be regionalized. So I get to see a bunch of Chinese stuff if I log into a different computer. And sometimes some of the material does look questionable.
i hate the idea of adblocker. i mean i don't like ads but... i'd rather just not patronize sites that don't deserve it.
1) eh. wouldn't affect me but i'm worried that with the smallish (ish, it's getting sizable) userbase you might get disappointed
2) that'd be totally cool. consider indie devs too?
3) oh uh yeah see #2

6) i don't mind ads at all. they've never been intrusive in my opinion.

I don't see the ads, previously as an adblock user and currently as a donor, but here's my two cents anyway.
1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
Nah, though I'd have qualms about what "regular" means, purely from a practicality standpoint. That has no bearing on this poll tho.
2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
Sounds like a good idea to me.
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
This would be cool. Something Awful has a dedicated user banner, and quite often has completely pointless but funny material on there. I'd super love to see something like that here, assuming the userbase can support it.
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in the derelict RMN store?
I don't understand what is being suggested here.
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
Go for it.
6) what about nothing?
I didn't realise there were ads because of my adblocker, so the net change would be nil. That said, I'm OK with ads for places I like and use a lot, provided said ads are not noisy, overly animated, or irritating (as in the old Evony ads. Urgh).
Bad credit? No credit? First time buyer? First time baby? No legs? 8 legs? You a spider? Are you a Spider trying to buy a house?

1) oh, I guess I should have specified what "regular" means
I was thinking, like, annually, or semi-annually at most.
2) I havent actually approached Degica or anything, it was just an idea I had.
3) we have no idea how to price it, but were thinking like a buck or two for a week as part of a rotation/pool of about a half dozen user "ads"/banners...? We are totally open to suggestions
4) we have an RMN Store http://rpgmaker.net/store/ why does nobody know this
you are so sweet

I'll disable ad blocker, JUST FOR YOU GUYS.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Noscript doesn't allow me to turn on/off ads just for RMN. It has controls based on the website where the offending script is hosted - so I would need to allow myswitchads.com and googleads.com, not for rpgmaker.net. For myswitchads, it looks like I might also need to allow each individual advertiser? Nuts to that either way. Both ad providers can stay universally disabled on every website.
That said, every time I open RMN on my phone or tablet (which don't run any ad-blockers) and see an ad that's actually for a game, I click on it. Sometimes I even play for a while. Once I played one of them enough times to discover a way to hack it through javascript injection and remove my character's underwear and get banned from their server. See, I'm helping!

I think a once-a-year funding drive would be cool. I'd chip in ^_^

YES. This is a good idea!

I'm a donor so I don't see the ads, and haven't for years, but if it helps keep the kitty full then I don't see an issue with targeted ads, or ads from people specifically in the industry such as Degica.
You could always make the donation a yearly thing, I mean I know a lot of people have a regular payment set up, but some are like me who threw what they had in their paypal at a particular point at you and said 'here, do with it as you will' and then forgot about it. I've donated to a couple of other things like SOS and Anky of course but RMN itself, only if you bring it to my attention that it's needed. However if you make donation a 'donor status for a year' then once a year I'll throw my paypal balance at you.
Though I suppose if you just make that a once a year funding drive it'll get the same result.
As it stands being a donor anything you do with ads isn't going to impact me, so take the above with a shovel of salt.
Also
this has to be the best response to any poll question I have ever seen, anywhere.

I have no problem with ads on this site. I understand the need to generate revenue to keep this site relevant and whatnot and I much rather have ads then forcing people to become members or "donate" Obviously to me it's not a donation if I'm being forced to buy a membership in order to view certain content. I say do what you believe is best and keep up the good work.
