yeah, tbh i barely noticed the difference between no ads and ads. i didn't even really appreciate it until now i guess? i donated to rmn to beg for people who participated in lockez & i's event to get MS/badges, not to skip the ads.

i can't vote as none apply to me.
i do not mind the ads. i understand the need for them.
but i am not interested in them and don't really have free money to spend on things that are not necessary to survive.

they do not get in the way or even delay/make the experience tedious.
like background audio which you cannot stop is the worst.
ads like on YT where is plays a short video before a video click is fine too.

in any case do what you feel you need to do. this is one for my most visited sites i come to daily. i would be sad if it went away as it and its community has changed gaming for me. for the better.

i wouldn't worry about not being able to donate -- you add a lot to the community, especially as a consistent gamepage visitor. rmn would be worse without you!

no just no, if this site has to keep asking me for money when sites that are almost dead NEVER have then there is something wrong, just ask RPG maker VX Ace how they stay up, I never notice ads on them

dude rpgmakerweb is a storefront with a forum attached. their income is several order of magnitudes higher than RMN's (which is basically non-profit anyway).
@CashmereCats: Was just about to make a post asking the same. :)

Very true RPG Maker web is all of those things, I said RPG maker VX Ace...
Guys I am extremely sorry that I am not wealthy enough to fully fund RMN on my own.

Like, seriously sorry.

So very very sorry.

I tend to dislike advertising and advertisements in general, and RMN's are no exception. Yet I am also a hypocrite, since I do not block RMN's ads because I want the site to get all the financial support it can, and because I also know that I literally never click on any ad links whatsoever anyway.
So while on the one hand, I do understand and support RMN trying to gain all the revenue it can, no matter whether that is used for site upkeep or other fun but less essential things, I am annoyed by the fact that some of the ads shown are for things like shady download sites or dubious dating portals etc. This is why I really like options 2 and 3 you listed, kentona, as this way the ads would at least be relevant to the focus of the site itself, and the groups behind those products would be known to you. It seems to me like that would be a good compromise and an improvement.

no no. If anyone should be apologizing, it's me. I have higher priorities via patreon contributions, or I'd probably be putting a good chunk of money into the site monthly.
I am not using an adblocker persay, but I use noscript, because no site should ever be allowed to just run javascript on a computer willy nilly. Now, that means I don't see any ads - I have enabled it for RMNet now so I do.

Possibly get some ads that aren't Javascript based, and put them in noscript tags, so that people without Javascript still get ads?

RMNet is much busier than VXAce .net. Considerably moreso. It has a much more resource intensive core, too, what with it hosting games and shit.

HBGames meets its costs mainly from donations but I normally pay the monthly hosting fee and keep the rest as surplus for emergencies/contests. But again, it is a much less resource intensive site.

We run on donors but ads buy silly stuff like games....no just no, if this site has to keep asking me for money when sites that are almost dead NEVER have then there is something wrong, just ask RPG maker VX Ace how they stay up, I never notice ads on them, and if we already have ads and it's still not enough for this site to stay up then maybe the site should not stay up...

And this is coming from someone that HAS donated to this site before...
So go jump to RMVA forums instead. Good luck with your non-hosting of games there. RMN is a lot more than just a few forums, mate. It has game pages, a shop, on-site downloads, locker space, cool events and a host of other things that even places like RMW - who have cash to burn - do not have. To act like a whiny, spoiled brat just because you don't want to pay money is stupid, especially when you're being asked - politely - how you feel. Your reaction to the presentation of facts was very rude and frankly, stupid. Grow up.

RMN is the only site which I allow my adblock off, even if I am a donator and don't see any ads. It's =home=, and I'm all for supporting =home=.

So I wouldn't mind at all renting space to Degica, provided they want it (and frankly, why wouldn't they?) or showing off commercial games that come from the site (hello Remnants of Isolation, get your adverts ready~ ;p ). And the shop. We really need to get that shop up and going for games.

You should be.

I mean...

Ads are fine. I expect a website of this size to have ads.

2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
I have an ad blocker on so I never notice the ads unless I visit from another device, but I will say the only thing about the ads that bothers me are the trashy ones featuring scantily-clad women trying to get you to sign up for F2P RPGs.

I think making the ads more relevant is a good idea. I imagine Degica products and the like will be relevant to most of the userbase here.

1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?

Not really. You could even throw in a yearly achievement so people could donate, say, $10 each year to get a new badge or something. Just to encourage donations. I haven't been able to donate since I've had like three surgeries/procedures to pay off, but there's always next year.

2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?

Indirect ad selling is the reason I use ad-blockers. I've seen things that are probably questionably legal pop up on some websites before I started using ad-blockers. So selling directly saves you from potential responsibility in the event of a hack, and looks much better. If I knew I was guaranteed to see RPG Maker-related ads, much like PlayStation or Xbox does with their home screen ads, then I probably wouldn't mind turning off my ad-blocker.

3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??

Love it. Love everything about it. Now when people show up in the forums and start advertising their unfinished Kickstarter-rejected commercial games and link to a totally different website you could just go "That will be $15 please."

I like this idea too. The thing is, you've got a lot of users on RMN. This is the ideal kind of site to put pay-for-click ads on, so as much as I like the idea of content specific ads, that also kind of narrows your options.
Shouldnt healthcare costs be borne by the state? What kind of place makes its citizens pay for a basic right like healthcare?

The shame I feel over not being wealthy is immense.
Hm... you could also reach out to other engines like Unity and the like and see if their creators want some ad space too. Make it more equal opportunity on the engine side of things, since we do have other engines on the site. For all that we have rpgmaker in our name, we're not just for rpgmaker.

(I actually had to explain that not long ago to some people who were looking to sign up but used alternate engines.)
Out of curiosity, what kind of monthly ad revenue do you think you'd need to totally get rid of ads altogether? Most of us posting in this thread don't see them because we're donors, but it doesn't hurt to consider the thousands of visiting game-seekers. The main page is already pretty busy without scantily clad boobies peddling cheap Korean MMORPGs.

we have no idea how to price it, but were thinking like a buck or two for a week as part of a rotation/pool of about a half dozen user "ads"/banners...? We are totally open to suggestions

pfft. Too cheap. I'd buy the whole pool myself. If I had that many games. Or even one.
If it was $1/day, I'd still buy a spot, and rent it all year, every year. That should give you a starting point as to what kind of revenue that alone could generate. Considering the unanimous support this idea's been getting, maybe another poll is in order.

TBCH I would pay several bucks for a week just to put in dumb vanity ads like pictures of cute dogs or something.

With 6 people in the pool, 0.84 bucks a day would already be enough to completely cover rmn's hosting fee. I'm not sure if everyone would be willing to pay that much, since that does translate to 25 bucks a month, but there's certainly a lot of potential there.

I think a new poll is indeed in order. One with the question how much people would be willing to pay for this.
before i donated i used adblock so i've never seen an ad here like ever
ha
hahah
hahahahahahahahaha

1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
i had to google "aghast" and was amused to realize its meaning is obvious.
rmn need fundingfunding yes it doesssssssssssssssssss um lets suport rmn so it dasnt die laik gamingw or all the others pls rmn is my only home

2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
yes
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
yes
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in the derelict RMN store?
yes but i'm not sure it would be as profitable. rmn needs money so we can have kentona statouettes.
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
nah, intrusive. But having a small reminder somewhere wouldn't hurt tho.
I was actually thinking about RMN having a Patreon...

6) what about nothing?
no
7) what about RMN just going full on MEGA and putting ADS EVERYWHERE with popup videos and pages where you have to watch an ad to get to the content you want, and ads between forum posts, and words in posts and articles being highlighted which link back to advertising pages, and massive banner ads, and covering download pages with false DOWNLOAD NOW!!! image ad links?*
fuck you.
