I couldn't find any donate button! Is it perk of being a donor?
Personally, I've never minded ads on RMN, they're discrete. However, the idea of selling the space to members/ indie devs is a nice one.
As for the store, it should be remade. For example adding some com games from the site would be a neat feature and probably a not so complicated task to do.

it is hidden in the footer between Contacts and Facebook
the perks are an achievement worth 1000ms, extra lockerspace and the ability to change your user title (and no ads)

1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in thederelictRMN store?
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
6) what about nothing?
7) what about RMN just going full on MEGA and putting ADS EVERYWHERE with popup videos and pages where you have to watch an ad to get to the content you want, and ads between forum posts, and words in posts and articles being highlighted which link back to advertising pages, and massive banner ads, and covering download pages with false DOWNLOAD NOW!!! image ad links?*
Poll:I Don't Have the cash to donate unfortunately, But I Do make sure I can see the ads the try to support the site. Anyway on to my opinions on the other stuff:
1)Not at all, As long as RMN gets the cash it needs to stay active I don't mind, Perhaps you could even give badges to people who donate during these times
2)I always enjoy it when the ads I see on a site are relevant to things i would like, but don't know about, so yes.
3)For sure!
4)Eh, the store would not bring in much cash for the site as a result of steam sales and humble bundles being a much better deal, I honestly think this could hurt the site financially, as well as reputation-wise as people seem to not like sites that peddle their stuff out in the open like that
5)In addition to the ads? Yes. In place of the Ads? No. I want RMN to have all the cash it needs
6)Yus! Becuz it totez does not conradickt evriting i just sad!!1!1!!!!111!!
7)Yus! I Wub Viwusis! Kentona mak it hoppin evein tho you sad you wud nvr lit it hoppen!
Nearly all ads I encounter online now horribly slow down my browser, make noises, are tremendously distracting, and do things like steal by browsing history. As a result, I hate nearly all ads, and while I do try to keep ad blocker off for sites I really care about, if my browser crashes trying to load the ads, the ad blocker goes back on.
That said, I am strongly in support of ads because I know it supports the sites I visit. So here's my request: keep the ads basic images with links I can click and I'm happy. No sounds. No animation. No background scripts. Just a picture and a link.
You proposed a bunch of different ad options. They sound wonderful. I would gladly support them. And since I'd know where the ads are coming from, I may even be willing to click on one once in a while. Seeing people's games advertised would be awesome.
For those curious, ads (or any webpage for that matter) steal a person's browsing history by reading what links "are purple" (that is, currently in your browser history). This means an ad simply has to throw a thousand links in the background to check to see if you've visited any of those sites. Have a million links on rotation for ads and you can get a pretty good picture of a person's browser history. This has been fixed in modern web browsers, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find that companies have a new method of tracking this data. Even if they haven't, checking thousands of potential links per ad per page load, even if you're using a browser that doesn't allow it, is going to slow things down a lot.

I'm usually pretty cool with ads as long as their usage and frequenct reasonable, unintrusive, and do not constitute and overwhelming portion of a given website. If a site makes me struggle to find the relevant content on a page, there's a problem.
As it stands now, I've never really had a problem with the way RMN uses ads, so I keep my adblocker off when browsing the site.
However, I WOULD be against the "Please disable your adblocker to view this content" thing that was mentioned earlier in the thread. Users should not be punished for wanting to browse the web on their own terms, and such measures are aggresively anti-consumer. Messages that ASK you to disable are fine, but locking content entirely seems like unnecessary punishment. I stopped visiting The Escapist altogether when they implemented that.
I'm sharing this viewpoint as someone who is a user and not a web developer. When a site tells me that I can't access it if I'm using an adblocker, my first thought is "I should stop visiting this site." And I think many, many others think the same way.

I got the benefits.
Having donated most of my lifes savings, I really don't know how those ads work.
Does the site get bucks just for putting the ads on a page OR do the ads have to be clicked on to get the bucks???
If the latter, maybe we should have a campaign to "sign of and click on an ad".
Or would that be considered gratuitis clicking??

for every 1000 views, RMN gets a couple of cents. For every click, RMN gets a couple of more cents.
And asking for people to click on the ads is against the rules.

We need to add a script that detects if the user has an adblocker and show a sad face to them and a message saying that ad revenue supports rmn and they are killing rmn and are a monster
This actually works. >_>
That, and the very low cost is what got me to drop some money to support modnexus. XD
author=Satedauthor=slashI've been on a few sites recently where they're like, "We reject people who reject ads". I'm like, that's cool, because I reject people who reject people who reject ads. Now, although I'd personally make an exception for RMN, I know that a lot of people wouldn't. Especially those who are only browsing or passing by.
Disabling the site for AdBlock users would definitely mean our # of new users would take a hit.
I hate when they do that.
Why? Because the thing that made me install adblock was not some laggy or overly annoying ad. It was because my computer was getting LOADED with goddamn viruses and malware due to ads (I think a lot of them came from Screwattack, which was LOADED with ads back in Version.4).
And those viruses STOPPED the moment I installed adblock. Then I found out my parents were having malware problems too. I installed adblock and fireforx for them. Malware for them went down DRAMATICALLY. My brother's computer got totally screwed by malware. I install adblock. No further problems.
...I now run adblock all the time, and when I got my new laptop, it was the second thing I installed, right after my antivirus. LITERALLY the only thing that I've whitelisted is a personal friend's youtube channel, because he's trying to make it on youtube and I want to help in any way I can.
For everyone else? Not taking any chances.
Well I'm both a donor AND have adblock on. In my defense, I only use this particular adblocker because it allows me to block the loading of several site elements (like large images, videos, flash-stuff, etc.) that slow my already unreliable connection to a pitiful crawl. I'd rather see crappily formatted text than nothing at all.
1) would you be aghast at the prospect of a regular funding drive on RMN?
I can't participate in that, since I do not have income in the first place. That said, I suppose anything goes. If it's needed, then why not?
2) what are you thoughts on RMN selling their adspace directly to someone like Degica for them to hawk things you might actually want, like DLC or engines or whatever?
I think it'll be a better idea to redirect those stuff to RMN Store instead, to generate some traffic there. I don't know how e-commerce work though, so I can't tell how hard this will be.
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
Risky, but otherwise a good idea. But the only takers will probably be those working on a commercial game or entering a large contest like IGMC.
4) what about RMN just showing a link to items in the derelict RMN store?
I don't get this. Link to items??
5) what about RMN showing a link to DONATE NOW?
As long as it is not any of the following, it should be fine :)
- A full-screen pop-up, complete with cheeky background music, sparkles, and potentially seizure-inducing rainbow flashes.
- A docked button that takes up to half of the screen real estate (though having it up with Notices, Submissions, and what-not should be fine).
6) what about nothing?
If "nothing" means HR2, then why not? XD
Oh yeah, sure. Go ahead. I'd love to hear all about the hot single girls hanging around my neighbourhood looking for someone to do some err... stuff.

Misleading question is misleading :).
I just allowed RMN on the adblock thing is this can help. A minor annoyance but certainly worth it for the website.
3) what about RMN selling their adspace directly to people to hawk their games and projects??
A good idea, but that runs the risk of having money being a louder voice than content. Not sure if I'm cool with that. It'd really depend on how it was implemented. So... I'm tentatively ok with just the idea.
I think this is a very important point. It's not about having to pay the one buck for advertising space, it's that money will start speaking louder than words.
Games which are showcased/featured usually are because they stand out due to their quality (as a reward so to speak). I would frankly be annoyed by having some games show up all the time because their dev payed some money. I'd rather have the money come from the ads banners.
