DOES ANYONE KNOW STUFF ABOUT GUNS (OR BASEBALL BATS)?
Posts
In a game idea I was working on as a proof of concept, the main character used the same gun that acted as locked equipment. Then underneath that there are three branches under weapon that denote the Ammo used, (Elemental/Status/Extra damage) Scope,(for accuracy and crit chance) and a special orb slot that imbued the gun with magic and extra skills to use in battle. Other than that, there'd also be ways to upgrade the gun itself, though it'd never be swapped out like the parts of the gun, just permanently upgraded.
Bats are a lot easier since you're making different pieces of equipment instead of keeping one. Use wood to start, and go from cheaper weak wood to stronger ones like Ironwood. Then do the same for the metals going from weaker to stronger. You can always look up what woods and metals are stronger than the other.
Basically I agree with Rine.

That's pretty much true if unity's doing that type of character. If she's doing the traditional gun nut that you always see at the practice ranges, well, to hear them talk, they've got a different gun for every occasion. Still, in all of that minutia, there is plenty for unity to take away in ideas for statuses and effects (random jamming is a great idea for a debuff.).
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Switching gun types is certainly not worse than FF/DQ characters switching from a greatsword to a fencing sword to a whip to a halberd to a boomerang in every town. It might be a little worse just because people will be more likely to think about it, due to the fact that more audience members have real experience with guns than with medieval weapons.
I think my method with the bats works just as well with the guns - no one will question the stats or the progression if you give them all Ridiculous RPG Weapon Names.
I think you're fine as long as you don't make the absurd mistake that FF7 made: it's mostly Ridiculous RPG Weapon Names, but about a third of the guns in that game are real world weapons, and their attack power is nonsensical. A partial list of real-world weapons in FF7, in order of attack power, is: Gatling Gun, Assault Rifle, Shotgun, Riot Gun, Winchester, Peacemaker. I swear to God that's from weakest to strongest. What is wrong with this picture?

Wow, thanks for such a huge and varied range of responses! :D Extra special thanks to Max McGee and pianotm for such detailed information! ^_____^ I really appreciate it!
Hmmm... so perhaps I could have all the guns of a certain type to make the issue of them sharing ammo work better. Like, say, revolvers or something. Or just one gun that gets upgraded, as some have mentioned.
Then they are too overpowered and must be saved for the sequel! :P
Hahaha, good old Parasite Eve! I need to replay PE. I think the freezing grenades thing is another sign that I'm probably overthinking things :P
Haha, well, this characters' gimmick is using bats, so I'll just have to work around the limitations.
Wow, thanks, I'm honored ^_^ I think if I can nail down how I'll be doing guns in the game, then I'll be good, though. Speaking of, this game is re-purposing those graphics I made from that McBacon Jam game, since it shares a modern-ish setting. Hope that's cool ^_^
Holy shit! C-can I steal some of these and their descriptions? Because this is gold right here! I'm trying to be somewhat realistic so I don't know if I can use, say, the Laserbat, but a lot of these are just too awesome not to use!
I think you have a great point here. Yeah, I'm definitely over-thinking this. While I want to avoid being totally unrealistic, I still don't need to go overboard in the other direction XD;;;
That's good advice. Thanks ^_^
The characters are in a bit of a dire situation, so it's possible they could only have one gun on hand, and have to keep upgrading it/look for better ones? All the while bragging that they'd be unstoppable if they had access to their arsenal back at home? XD
Hahaha, I barely even noticed that when I first played FF7. >.>;; But yeah, in hindsight, that seems pretty crazy XD

PLENTY of videogames abstract this highly, to the point where all pistols just load "pistol ammo" and revolvers load "revolver ammo". so there's no distinction between 9mm and .45 ACP or between .357 magnum and .44 magnum. there is technically nothing wrong with this: it's up to you the level of abstraction you want in your game. : )

hockey sticks have a greater range than baseball bats

Bat -> Bat with nails in it
Pistol -> Machine gun that fires freezing grenades (Thanks Parasite Eve!)

oh, as for the character who uses bats thing, that is rather limiting. the only progression I can think of is bat -> cricket bat -> aluminum bat -> barbed wire bat -> nailbat (and now we're getting into "do you really care about realism" territory but) -> flaming bat -> flaming nailbat? actually, come to think of it a 6-8 weapon progression might be fine depending on how long the game is. but letting the character use other bashing melee weapons besides bats (there are oodles) would be cool too, if the game setup and graphics allow for it. oh, and you could include "whiffle bat" as a joke weapon XD

lemme know if you ever want any more substantive help with this game, by the way, my enthusiasm to collab with you is undampened since January/February

High-level bat suggestions:
Electrobat - Bat and taser, now united in holy matrimony
The Babe Ruth - Legendary left-handed bat of the Bambino
Rune Bat - Engraved with strength-boosting enchantments
Sledgebatter - A bat with a giant mallet on the end
Vampire Bat - Drains enemy HP when attacking
Batty Bat - Inflicts confusion status effect
Flanged Bat - At this point this thing is literally just a mace
Laser Bat - Not super great at actual baseball
Felsteel Shadowbat - Forged by hellfire in the dark heart of the Underdeep
Shortstop's Bane - He might as well just move to outfield
Turf Violator - Gonna have to replant the field again
Sonic Boom - Breaks the sound barrier with every swing
Mach Three - We just went ahead and skipped Mach 2, you're welcome
The Crash - It's like getting hit by a truck going 80MPH
Darth Maul Bat - Twin-ended bat that can be spun easily
The Atom Smasher - The entire ballpark will probably be vaporized
Tempest Swing - It would be a waste not to have a wind-elemental bat
Dragon Bone - An approximately basebal-bat-shaped femur from a winged dragon
Holy shit! C-can I steal some of these and their descriptions? Because this is gold right here! I'm trying to be somewhat realistic so I don't know if I can use, say, the Laserbat, but a lot of these are just too awesome not to use!

To the original point: If you're worrying about being realistic, you're going about this the wrong way. No one really expects guns to be 100% realistic in games.

Yeah, by all means, steal that whole list. That's why I posted it!
If you want a funny anecdote for baseball in your game, here's what happens if a pitcher throws the ball at 90% light speed.

I also didn't include any caveman clubs, cake batter, or autoexec.bat
I might need to make a second list

Unity: so your game is re-using the graphics you made for Bright Future? I'm definitely interested in following it now. : )
I'm glad someone's doing something with those resources.

Thanks! :DDDDDD I'm really excited about it! I'm taking the idea I had back on my Idea Depot thread for the "Weird Horrific Urban Exploration Game" and running with it, using the Bright Future tilesets and monsters I made, and going with cartoony character designs (done by MakioKuta, who's art I just adore ^_____^) to contrast with the strange things happening.
I'll be making a gamepage for it in the next week or two, and I'd be super pleased if you or anyone else from this thread would like to check it out :D

Here's a website with a chart about wood strength if you want to use realistic baseball bats. You could have bats made of stronger wood and then metal instead of crazy fantasy bats.
