XENOBLADE CHRONICLES X

well, why don't you start? tell us what you liked so far. I'm interested in the positive points as well.

I think it's important to note, though, that raising these issues isn't making some kind of value judgement -- people are expressing disappointment, not driving the conclusion that this game is Objectively Bad.
I played it all day and it's pretty dope so far. Quite different than the Wii game in several ways.

You create your own (mostly) silent protagonist from a fairly limited character creator instead of there being a fully voiced character written by the developers. The new class system is a lot cooler than the skill category thinger from the last game. This time it branches out, splitting into three separate classes at each stage, which teaches your dudes different abilities based on what route you invest in, and there's a lot to choose from. A lot more stat diversity than the last game too, so there are more things to consider when outfitting your character. I haven't unlocked the mecha yet, so I'm looking forward to whenever that happens. A considerable portion of the story is told through its sidequests, of which there are shitloads of, and the game world is almost completely open to you right from the start--I've only run into like two artificial progression gates so far and the first one was in the intro. This makes it a much more open-ended, exploration-driven game than most JRPGs, which is always a nice change-of-pace from the norm.

I don't really have a lot to complain about yet except for a few things. The music is a lot different than the Wii game. I guess it fits the game well enough, but the original's soundtrack is too great to compare. It's still a Monolith Soft RPG, so all of the characters look like expression-less dolls, which I've never liked. If you didn't find it a problem in Xenosaga or Xenoblade, you probably won't mind it here, though. The UI is tiny. My living room is pretty large and I keep the floor open, so my couch is far away from the TV. I can't really read a lot of the things on the UI from that distance, so I've ended up tossing a bean bag up close and chilling on that. Like the Wii game, you still select your abilities using the d-pad and an action bar at the bottom of the screen. I think they missed an opportunity to put these commands on the tablet screen, which has been reserved for a mapping system that could've easily been suppressed during combat instead. By extension, they could've offloaded a lot of the UI onto the tablet during battle. Like Xenoblade before it, it's very cluttered when there's a lot going on. The monsters are awesome looking and I'd like to get a clearer look at them while filling them with bullets.

Glad to! For one, I enjoy how just about every aspect of this game is an improvement on Xenoblade 1 and not a downgrade. The game pretty much throws you right into a giant world to explore (after a semi-lengthy opening cutscene) and the world was just breathtaking. You're almost instantly shown just how vast the whole game is by showing a humongous dinosaur like enemy that makes you look like an ant.

The creativity in the sky alone baffles my mind. The night sky is full of stars, beautiful giant moons, and at some points I swear there were auroras floating around. The landscape itself I can't even wrap my head around how someone thought of this stuff and made it look good. I'm only in the first area. (I would find examples but I want to avoid spoilers like a plague lol)

The gameplay is fast paced and requires thought and skill to pull off correctly, and there's already a bunch of customization especially compared to the original Xenoblade. I'm learning new things about how to battle properly left and right.

And for me, the story is pretty interesting. Without getting into too much details, it's about crash landing on a new planet and pretty much attempting to rebuild human civilization they had just previously lost. It's a story about exploring the new and dangerous and attempting to keep what was theirs before this terrible situation happened. And I'm sure the story will twist and turn until it becomes about something completely new. (if anyone knows the story somehow, don't confirm that please haha)

P.S. To go further on what you said at the end of your post, saying the game is worth nothing more than watching an LP is, well, saying the game is not worth playing. That's calling it bad.

Edit: I agree with most of what you said Jude, haha. I'm still iffy about the music. I mean, it's really good, but Xenoblade's was just perfect. I think they should have kept the same team of composers.
You underestimate the selling power of an LP, my friend. I've bought a lot of games after watching LPs of them - it's why game companies let people LP their games in the first place: free advertising that nets them sales.

That said, it does look like the kind of game that I'd rather watch an LP of than play, mainly because I'm unsure of the content and how it plays. I've never played any of the games in the series, despite hearing good things about the early ones, so it's something I'd rather watch someone else play first and then decide on whether I'd want to play it myself or not based on what I see.

As to the sexualisation stuff - I won't stop playing a game for something like that but it doesn't paint a great picture of a series where sexualised armour is something that is considered the norm. Fair enough if you've the one, but the idea of boob windows on womens' armours when the male versions don't have them is beyond stupid - not only from a protection pov, but also just makes me want to facepalm.

I wonder how long it will take for Japanese game companies to realise that maybe letting that shit into your game will be cutting out possible audiences instead of encouraging them. :/

Not saying it makes it a bad game, but it does make a potential purchaser wonder if it's worth the buy when ridiculous stuff like that was something the designers actually thought was a good idea to create. They'd have better nailed all the other parts of the game if they had the time to make with the sexies.
If makes you feel better, Liberty, there was a male character in the first Xenoblade who became stronger the more naked he was. Glorious Dunban, the naked dodge tank.
I'm actually all for LPs. Personally I think a game about exploring and discovery might be something best played yourself, but I know not everyone is all that dedicated to every game that comes out. And if someone enjoyed the start enough they can just stop early and get the game themselves.

I haven't heard anything about the boob windows for female armors yet lol. That's pretty ridiculous.

I just mainly want to make the point that so far, this game is FAR from the problem in Japan, seeing how the bikini armor on Lin (the 13 year old) was suuuper tame and an armor you can get for everyone else as well. It wasn't made for pedos. It was made because the bikini armor was super popular in Xenoblade 1. Seriously, most of the time I see Shulk online in Smash Bros he's wearing his swimming trunks. If they excluded a bikini for a character in fears they'd be seen as a pedo, that'd be more guilty to me. Just about every sitcom ever has multiple episodes where the daughter goes swimming. Doesn't make the show or viewers pedophiles. Most people tend to swim. Pedophiles would like them, bikini or no, because they have a problem. I don't see having a character in a bikini supporting a serious problem such as that. Japan has a problem, but I seriously believe this time the issue is HUGELY over-exaggerated.

Well I don't want to go too much further into that haha.

Jude: My favorite part of Dunban was a random cheesy line he said during an ambush. "Excuse me, we ordered room service an hour ago." It came out of nowhere and quite frankly I laughed my ass off. I mean, I could have seen Reyn saying it, but Dunban is a pretty serious character.

Not even remotely a porn game, haha. I think the user meant it's a game made for adults and not kids. The same way a serious tv drama are aimed for adults and not kids. Adult oriented doesn't necessarily mean porn.

this is a pretty fine nuanced point of English, but yeah when you say something is "adult themed", that does kinda imply porn as people use language nowadays.

i mean, i don't assume a videogame is for kids, i assume videogames are "for adults" by default. because it's not the 90s. but maybe it's different over in nintendo land? it's a really weird statement all and all because there are obviously hundreds or thousands of "adult" marketed games that are cool enough to buy.

mawk - I wasn't talking about what was said at that point, but what would come. And has come. As soon as a young girl in a bikini was mentioned things played out pretty much like I expected. As it always does.

Yes, I meant adult as in all Mario games are stupidly easy. You've got lego games and skylanders and disney infinity and splatoon. It's all cutesy kid oriented. I'm sorry you think adult means porn but we don't all think like you. I mean, there is Mass Effect and Assassins Creed, but those aren't Wii U exclusives and I want more games like that.

This is why RMN sucks now. Literally NO conversation can happen without a certain set of issues becoming the focal point. A small comment is made. The same set of people show up to reiterate their outrage and the concept. The same set of other people will eventually show up to dispute something the first set of people said. And it gets into a heated discussion about social sensibilities.

Yes, social sensibilities affect everything but we don't need to talk about it every fucking time! We've already heard all possible arguments and opinions. There is no need to keep doing it over and over and over.

When those topics come up on purpose I try not to stick my nose in and say "You guys can't talk about this!" but when we are trying to talk about a fucking game and that kind of thing ends up dominating the conversation I still get the blowback from saying "please don't talk about this here". I'm labeled as someone who is trying to silence the conversation. mawk does his usual, create a status to express his outrage in two places at once. Bleeding that adversarial-ness throughout the site. I'm the bad guy because I wanted to have a simple discussion about a game without having the uncomfortable and predictable conversation about all the things wrong with society. I'm sick of it. Where is MY safe space.

You're all a bunch of PC principals.
people have wasted far more breath trying to justify the fanservice and decry the people who mentioned it than Sai or em or I have spent criticizing it. the problem isn't people fixating on portrayal issues, it's people who massively overreact to seeing those issues raised and pretend that the critics are having some immense soapbox speech for just mentioning something that bugs them.

like, you derailed the topic yet again, after Jude and I worked to turn it toward the positives as zDS suggested, with multiple paragraphs about how I should stop talking about something I literally made two posts about -- one to criticize it, and one to reassure someone of the relevance of that criticism.

tl;dr if people were able to let criticism of fanservice sit without leaping out of their chairs and screaming 'WHAT IS THIS SOCIAL JUSTICE BULLSHIT' the point would have been laid to rest on the previous page

oh my god
I for one am not angry. Neither should you guys. Take a moment to laugh at the PC principle comment. Bottle that anger and use it to destroy the old japanese men who make 13 year olds wear bikinis.
I'm already on it. you can't see the small rocks floating up off the ground around me, but trust me.

how's the fashion been in the game so far? I've heard that there are vanity slots (which is always a plus for me), but aside from fairly plain-looking military wear I don't know how broad it is. can you customize colours and so on?
Regarding boob windows: In the sixteen hours I have already invested, I haven't noticed any. I am definitely not saying it doesn't exist, but that it's at least insignificant enough that it hasn't stood out. I have some bikini armor--like actual swimwear bikinis, but if you put it on a dude then they're shirtless to match their booty shorts. Appropriately, swimsuit armor sometimes comes with swimming speed augments, though little else so I'd never actually equip it.

Warning to anyone who has the soundtrack: it has buggy DRM that will encrypt your hard drive if you try to play it.

good thing i've been listening to the tracks on youtube for like a month
the robots have come to take over our machines with their music
I've played 11 hours now and I'm finally "getting" the mechanics. So god damn fun. So many ways to interact with the land, so many cool places to explore.

Fashion wise I haven't gotten much options yet besides mostly military armor. There is some normal looking clothes you can buy, but not too much yet. You can probably develop more something like that with one of the armor manufactures you can invest in. I personally like the style of my main character's armor, but the female character's armor is a bit silly with everything covered but the chest area, like it's a fashion rather than for protection. With that said, the armor that covers the rest of the body is pretty cool at least, lol.

oh my god
An angry joke.

The fact that the first page of the topic is full of that nonsense is enough to complain about, regardless of if it stopped by the time I was able to read the topic and post that last comment. If that's the end of it I will be happy.

You keep calling any suggestion to not have a discussion about that kind of thing a total frothing opposition to equality. As if wanting to talk about positive/upbeat things equates to being a bigot. I miss the days where people could talk about something and not have that come up.

I still can't find this game anywhere :( Nothing worse than anticipating for so long and not getting satisfaction!
