So apparently there is a global game jam thingy going on this weekend. Is anyone participating?

I just thought I'd point it out in case someone had no plans this weekend.

Yeah! I'm gonna be a part of it along with the rest of my class.

We'll be using Unity, so I've got a lot of relearning to do to make sure I don't hold my group back.

Apparently, you have to know people in your community to do this, so that's a no for me.
As far as I know the deadlines are already over, too. So that's a no for me. Would love to be a part of one someday in the future, though.

I could do it in Toronto for sure, but I really don't have the time at the moment. Plus, my room mate and game dev partner isn't here, so.

Since this requires in person contact and there isn't squat in my area for gamedev communities, I'm out.

Probably going to participate again! My school hosts a site and I'd like to be on a team where I could just focus on modeling and textures. I've been sick though, and last year it seriously messed me up for the quarter so I'm debating wether its worth it or not.
I always go to them, have a sleeping bag this time around so I don't sleep on the hard floor like I usually do. Thinking of doing a solo jam for once, dunno yet.
I'm doing it. I had to work on Friday so I didn't arrive to the jam until about 1pm the next day. Going to bed now... we'll see if I can manage to finish my thing tomorrow. Making a shitty platformer.
hashed out a game http://globalgamejam.org/2016/games/brain-bog I'll probably upload a more balanced version on RMN if I feel like it.

It was quite the experience. I had to relearn Unity's interface and cram C# knowledge at the same time. I think I got a collective five hours of sleep over the entire weekend.

The end result was a pretty pathetic 2.5D stealth platformer. I'm a bit ashamed of showing off what my group came up with seeing as it's really awful, but I can take pride in the knowledge that everything in the game was created from the ground up. No prefabs or store assets were used. It may not be the best, but we created it from scratch, and we can say that it was ours.

Oh wait. No, we can't.

It's a good thing there's some pride in making something from scratch, because everything else about it was awful for me and the group. Wanna know the most fun part about being in a game jam? Not being allowed to let others play the game. There was a special offer in my area where a company would take a look at your creation and offer an internship depending on how much they like it. To take that track, though, you had to sign a non disclosure agreement. In a friggin GAME JAM. Because we were supposed to create a game based on specific guidelines that the company wanted. If we were chosen, we would turn that into a franchise. So, basically, the company had no ideas of their own and was looking to game jammers to create ideas for them.

I mean, sure. I dug my own grave by signing the damn thing, but it's pretty pathetic to not even be allowed to claim the end result as our own, and not even allowed to show other jammers what we were working on.

The jam itself was pretty fun, though.

You're magical to me.

Welcome back, Red! ^_^ Glad you had fun! That's a shame about the game, tho ;_;

Thanks, unity! Regardless of how the game turned out, I now have about 600% more Unity and coding knowledge, met some awesome 3D modeling and audio guys, and managed to crank something actually playable, if not exactly fun, in 48 hours. That's more than enough to call this jam a total success!
That's dumb. I would share it anyway. What are they going to do? Sue you? If they're that eager to waste their money, I'd be surprised.
