[JAN] MISAO ROUND-UP

Posts

Pages: 1
This year we're going to try and put into spotlight the games that come through the site which are eligible for the Misaos. This is the first of many threads that will pop up over the course of the year to show the various games out there available for voting.

The aim of these threads is to get people talking and giving their opinions on the games in question. Some of the staff have played some of the games and given their thoughts, and anyone who has played any of the games listed here can give a small summary of what they thought (or provide a link to reviews, Let's Plays or Let's Tries) and it will be added to the relevant post.

Without further ado, the games of this month!

A Game Maker game, it is quite frustrating due to how it throws you in the deep end and demands you swim straight off the bat. The controls don't help with that much, either, using the J, I, O, P, WASD keys. That said, it is only three stages, and a challenge is good for you, or so I hear. Just keep your Blood Pressure pills nearby.
Wait until it's been tinkered with a little unless you like a lot of a challenge.

stunning demo. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Great gameplay, engaging story, and neat characters as well as a fun concept. It's a good quality game in most respects and it's definitely in my sights for best demo.

Machine Made: Rebirth

Ollimio
Liberty

A rather charming game with a lot of inspiration taken from Earthbound, especially with the battle system. It's very cute, but it also has a darker 'edge' to the plot, though it isn't really explored much in the demo. About a boy named Ollie who wakes up in a lab and has to find a way to escape. Pretty short - about 15 minutes in length, and battles aren't hard.
Try - if you don't mind cliff-hangers and enjoy Earthbound and skimpy story.

Decent game if you don't mind a lot of fighting. The game is basically just battles with some dialogue here and there. The skill system is at least interesting, and the dialogue is alright, though sparse for an Indrah game. Does look good and sound good but not one of her better works.
Try - if you like a lot of battles.

Uzi's Drugged Adventures: Vengeance with a side of eggs

An Enigmatic Daymare

Hired Sword

The Indigo Illusion

Black Galax revert

Lunar Quest
Liberty
A game heavily inspired by Star's Favour, it has a lot of things that are similar with the aforementioned game. That said, it's less of a grind and I found it actually more fun, despite the similarities. It's fairly simple - clear rooms of monsters and then beat boss - but a neat little romp despite that.
Try if you don't mind simple dungeon crawls.

Neo Retro Super Mario Bros

Rot: A Kinetic Novel

A Gang of Weirdoes

Island Tales

Liberty
You take the role of a young woman who has just been reunited with her father after her parents' divorce. Set on an island, you basically just follow the story line as it goes. Progression is pretty decent but there's a lot of issues when it comes to mapping and presentation in general. Tons of passability errors and some really questionable design choices. That said, it's actually an interesting setting and the creator has tried to make things at least look interesting.
Try it if you don't mind lots of mapping issues/passability errors. Or maybe wait until they're fixed up a bit more.

Brain in Flame

Neogenesis

Wednesday's Knight
Liberty
Based on DnD campaigns, the game presents itself as one. As such there's a LOT of telling instead of showing and it can be a bit irksome to have to read a lot of description before getting to do anything. The battles are also pretty hard, based on dice rolls - as such your damage output is random (as is your healing ability, which is a big issue). I can't say it works well to use dice rolls like that in an RM game. There's also some graphical issues here and there, but otherwise, it's an interesting little game.
Try it if you're hardcore into DnD or want to see what the fuss about DnD is all about.

The Bamford Tenement

White Sky

Liberty
Take the role of a young teenage girl trying to find a splash of colour in a world of black and white. There's a lot of unsettling stuff in this game - from the make-up of the world it is set in to the back-stories of certain characters. It's interesting, if you like the style and storyline, but there are some issues when it comes to direction of what to do to progress.
Try it if you like darker stories.

Learson: Chapter 4

Screenlife

Liberty
LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O0jSw0wUxg
For a 10 minute game it's got some creepy parts and interesting story, if you can make out certain hints about it - which can be hard due to how small the images are. The premise is interesting and there's some legitimately creepy parts.
Try.

Interesting short little horror game. It's definitely the scariest game I've played this year, although the year is only starting, and I haven't played many great horror games this year. Hopefully there's more good ones to come.

Seems like a great way to make people aware of what's going on.
But what about game pages that are released now and add download later? Is there a way for you to tell when they have updated their game?
Yes. Don't worry, I'll be cross referencing the lists as the months go, so updates to older downloads and the like will be noted. These are all the games that are currently available for nomination for 2016 Misaos.

@Sated, even better..
What if the game page is private and has a download, but no one can see it yet!?
Then Bam! Made public.
When it's made public it'll get attention and I will notice. Maybe. If not, they (or others) are free to point out that I've missed a game.

I didn't participate in this thread for some reason. I'll elaborate on a couple of games throughout Jan that I enjoyed. And I only played a couple.

Prayer of the Faithless - stunning demo. I thoroughly reommend it to anyone. Great gameplay, engaging story, and neat characters as well as a fun concept. It's a good quality game in most respects and it's definitely in my sights for best demo.
