[RM2K3] I NEED HELP DECIDING ON A NEW MAKER!

I know 2k3 like the back of my hand but I'd like to use something fancier. As long as it can do what I need it to do of course.

Highest to lowest priority:
  • Side-view battles
  • MP + TP
  • Animations that move the battler (they're called action sequences?)
  • In-battle transformations (could probably just be an easy class switch)
  • Animations that move more than one battler (but battler 2 doesn't lose his turn)
  • Animated monster sprites
  • Skill costs manager (throw money, etc.)
  • Item synthesis

Right now I'm leaning towards VX Ace but I'm worried about those action sequences. Any help would be much appreciated!

The TM is for Totally Magical.

VX Ace doesn't come with side view battles; but you can plug in Victor Sant's animated battle, or Galv's much simpler Animated Battles, use Holder's Animated Battlers with this scripts and you'll have a side-view battle system that looks just perfect.

You can go with MV, it improves on some things, but for the most part, it's not as good as VX Ace.

That's my suggestion, anyway.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

RPG Maker MV can make games for mobile phones. If you're interested in selling your game, that alone is worth more than all the improvements from RM95 to RMVX Ace combined.

If you're not interested in selling your game, VX Ace is just as good, about twenty bucks cheaper, and you'll be able to find a lot more people who know a lot about it and are able to help you do things.

And yeah, the nice thing about every RPG Maker after RM2K3 is that you can make the battle system and every other part of the game work however you want. You're not limited to some built-in battle system, you can make your own from scratch, or use one of hundreds that other people have made and posted online.
Okay thanks a lot!

I'm not interested in selling any (Maker) games right now. Outside of making facesets and sprites I think trying to make the other resources from scratch or finding original content would be a chore for me right now.

VX Ace it is!
There are free trials available for most of the makers, if you want to get a general feel for how they play. You can find them on their product pages on rpgmakerweb.

Yup that's exactly what I'm talking about. I feel like it helps make JRPG battles feel less monotonous.

I guess it boils down to me finding a way to do action sequences with VX Ace (I'm pretty sure it's possible) or just going with MV.
Something else to consider is that VX Ace uses Ruby as the language while MV uses Javascript. While others may disagree, I strongly believe Javascript is the more valuable language outside of game design. MV also has the chance of being upgraded into a newer version, giving you portability into the newest engine (should you decide to pay out for the upgrade).

If you're going with VX Ace, you may also wait around to see if a discount comes up. I'm not sure how often it happens, but I purchased my copy for $20, which made it a pretty easy decision to upgrade.
MV is currently on sale...
