Helen's Mysterious Castle is an rm2k game being sold for $2 on Steam. It is very, very good. Why is it good? It is a creative and well-crafted exploration-based adventure through a mysterious castle filled with interesting battles and navigational puzzles!

With an enjoyable and... bizzare... cast of friends and enemies, Helen's journey is pretty damn memorable. The engagements are a lot of fun, using a sort of single-character CTB where each weapon both you and the enemy use has its own wait time before you can use another action. Yeah, you can use that Thunder spell that ignores Defense, but make sure you don't get counterattacked while chanting!

This map alone has two (or more...?) major secrets. The game is less than 10 hours long, but it's fairly meaty (especially if you try to get ALL the things).

I highly recommend it if you like doctored-up RTP, exploration, interesting battles, goofy enemies, and/or dragons.

Added this to my wishlist until I'm less stingy enough to pay $2.

This actually looks interesting!

And will be buying it tonight. $2 isn't really expensive per se (although I have been pushing back buying it for quite a while).
An amazing game. I played it before it was put on Steam. Definitely challenging too.

I've seen speed-runners beat the game in under an hour, and that is nuts. XD
Wow, I thought you hated commercial RM games more than anything. The music and graphics feel awfully familiar for some reason. They give me some Legionwood vibes.

Anyway, I'm always glad to see fellow developers putting out games from their hearts using RM. It definitely motivates me.

What are you on about?????? Legionwood is RPG Maker VX, while Helen's Mysterious Castle is RPG Maker 2000! They are in no way the same!!
The first dungeon track is in LW1 as well, battlebacks are from XP's RTP and most of the other graphics look like they're from the 2k2 and 2k3 RTP. I remember seeing a lot of the graphics that Helen uses in a cancelled Legionwood sequel (Legionwood 2: Revolution in Tartarus, or something like that).

I never said that the games were the same, or that LW is a 2k2 game. They use similar resources, hence, why Helen gives me some vibes of the Legionwood series.

EDIT (to Craze): I've read that you think that RM games are only supposed to be silly little games made for fun and not to be taken seriously. They're not real games and shouldn't be treated as such (therefore, they should never be sold). I also know that you despise multiple developers that use RM commercially, like Indinera Falls, Aveyond, RosePortalGames and Dark Gaia, to name a few.

That's because Legionwood 2 literally copy-pasted the files out of my game, Diablocide.

it's still a massive insult to Helen's, which has creative integrity XD

okay i see how you can get this impression. lemme clear a few things up then... maybe i should just replace my rmn profile bio with this since i'm.... pretty active and vocal in the rm* community...

1) I believe in two different camps for RM* games. Amateur projects have every right to exist as "silly little games made for fun and not to be taken seriously." They should be judged on their cleverness and fun, not on extreme artistic merit or compared to commercial projects. There's no point in comparing Leo & Leah or Romancing Walker to Monkey Island or Final Fantasy X.

2) RM* games that are commercial or that strive to be Golden Era (see: Legionwood, Forever's End, Exit Fate, Hero's Realm, To the Moon) should be judged as any other game that you could come across. In other words, they should not be given leeway for being made in an RPG Maker engine.

3) I have nothing against good commercial projects like Helen's Mysterious Castle, Ara Fell, or... I'm trying to think of a good XP-or-later commercial game.... uh, maybe Remnants of Isolation, but don't take that as an endorsement because I haven't played it yet...). The problem is that there is a massive pile of absolute shit, and it stems from those sites you mentioned.

4) I will admit that I have a negative history/falling-outs with several commercial RM* devs, such as harmonic (disgusting human being!) and Dark Gaia (with whom I've had a mutual truce. I don't love his games, but I won't attack his character. yes i already dissed legionwood in this topic). Others, such as Indinera and Reives, I have watched for over a decade and find them anywhere on a spectrum of reprehensible (the former) to just not very good (the latter).

tl;dr: don't judge amateur games compared to the greats. judge indie games compared to the greats.

HOW ARE ALL OF YOU LIKING HELEN'S WONDERFUL GAME!?!?!?
Though I can't count how many foreign games have used The Decisive Battle from Trial.

-Helen's Mysterious Castle
-Demon King Chronicle
-Doll (I think that's the name.)
-Ruina (I think I heard the theme in this game as well, but I MAY be wrong.)

Check those last two out. They're definitely worth a good look too.

Dem gamez, I swearz. :P
To be fair, the stuff LW used was basic stuff that anyone can use (or can be used if you have, say, bought both engines), so... it's only natural that it show up in other games on other engines. You shouldn't ascribe RTP stuff to any one game, after all. Unless it's Sairen, in which case, yes you should.

I haven't played it yet, but I did hear about this game quite a while back - like years ago. I didn't play it then, either. I should probably do that but the last RM game I bought on steam was a bit... eh, despite being told that it was a pretty decent game. It's okay, don't get me wrong, but if I'm comparing it to even some of the non-commercial titles we see coming through the site pretty often, it's a little meh.
I'm sorry, but I actually never meant to insult Helen. I actually like LW1 a lot. :/ Helen does look like a good game and I am probably going to buy it sometime, now when I know about it (mainly because it looks like a fun game and only costs 2$). Thanks for letting us know about this game!

I understand your points and agree with most of them. A lot of RM games are made for fun and are treated as hobbies. More serious RM games are definitely indie; they should not always be compared to the AAA titles that hundreds, if not thousands of people have worked on. They can be compared of course, but it's important to realize the different scopes of AAA games and indie titles. Thanks for clearing things up!
Also:
I'm interested in your history with harmonic, since I thought he was a pretty cool dude (not that I know him).
I've completed this game and...yep, I really enjoyed the gameplay of this game. Very, very creative. One can see the creator has definitely put in a lot of effort into the gameplay. Goes to show 1-to-1 battles can be just as interesting. The story is also pretty interesting as well. Thumbs up to this game. And Liberty, you should definitely try this! Since you loved Romancing Walker (which has some RTP vibes to this), you'll surely love this! It's worth the price imho (unlike the Sacred Tears True which I believe you bought...that one is really a wasted potential).

Btw, for those who are interested in more Japanese RPG Maker games (or similar ones), you can check out this website: http://gekikarareview.com/review_rpg/rpg_index.html. It's basically a review site of Japanese indie games that include Helen's Mysterious Castle, Cave Story and Nocturne: Rebirth (and a few non-Japanese indie games like Exit Fate, Spelunky and OFF).

One game that strikes me in that site at present is One Way Heroics. I've seen this translated game on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/266210/) and it looks pretty interesting, but has anyone played this game?

EDIT: Oh, and for those who are wondering how that review site reviews games, the reviewers judge it based on 3 categories: Addictiveness (so basically gameplay), Graphics and Sound. Not all games have ratings, though.

EDIT2: Changed Cave Story to the correct location. I actually knew Cave Story is a Japanese indie game, but my brain slipped there ~ ~
Japanese devs make some serious shit rpgmaker they seem to have more intrest un 2k3 and 2k than the newer ones as far as i know,i found alot of really good games like an exact DWIII engine on rm2k and even FF engines..i couldn't play it since you know japanese rtp..??!!.

But i really would likd to try this game out.

It's fun! It's simple(ish) and a bit chaotic until you get used to it, but it has a neat concept for a roguelike: you can't go back. Or, in this case, left. It's also really cheap so if you like roguelikes I suggest trying it out. There's a certain panicky joy in breaking down a wall with your sword as the darkness closes in on you because you forgot to leave a building before its door was consumed.

Holy crap! This game looks impressive!

That custom battle system is even more impressive considering the hoops one must jump to make stuff like that work in rm2k.

The detail... on everything! :O
