AS AN ADULT, DO YOU FIND YOURSELF PLAYING MORE VIDEO GAMES AT THIS AGE OR LESS?
Posts
Way, way, waaaaay less.
When I was a kid, we had a nintendo, and then a super nintendo, but I had to share with three other siblings, so I never actually got to play anything, just watch. Grandma also decided videogames were stupid and expensive, so we missed the PS1 era entirely. Once highschool came around, we got a PS2, and while I still had to share, my sibling's interests veered away from games. That left me with more time on the system, and I found myself playing a lot of JRPGs, many of which influenced my game design philosophy today.
Anywho, fast forward to now, and I find myself with absolutely no time to sit down in front of a TV and hold a controller for hours. It feels like a waste of time to me, when I could be on my computer, getting other work done. When I game, it's usually in short bursts on the 3DS, or a casual session on a steam game. I can't keep up with the console nonsense anymore.
Though I will make exceptions for favorite series like Tales of, Persona, Fighting Games, Star Ocean, etc. Otherwise, lots and lots of games just pass me by now.

With the rise of mobile gaming via phones over handhelds I've found my average gaming time has increased, though there does seem to be more of a delay between must-play RPG releases on consoles these days - I remember the back to back releases on the PSOne racking up a que of games I HAD to play. As a parent now too I can confirm that sinking considerable time into first Inquisition and then Trails of Cold Steel around family time hasn't been too much of an issue either.
I play Less by Far, but that's all relative because I'm still pretty sure I play way more games than most people in my position play.
32, wife, 2 kids below the age of 5. If the kids are in bed and I'm not washing dishes or on reddit or something, a console is in my hands.
I'm kind of like that guy from "The World God Only Knows." Any spare moment, I'll pop out my psp or 3ds or phone and play a few moments.
I can't believe I put ~90 hours into Bravely Default. It is literally the only Non-Disgaea game I have ever grinded my way to lvl99 without cheats, and I didn't even notice. I hit the cap way before the end.
I blame Disgaea for making me love maximizing leveling techniques.

I still play quite a few games but I'm not sure if the amount of playing has lowered or heightened. I think my big deal is that I do not find many excuses to play games anymore. As a kid it made way more sense to play games just to the pass the time or that you were bored.
Idk I get kind of depressed that I could be doing something productive or more social. I'm kind of just playing games out of habit or just this nagging feeling that there's this one game I need to beat before I die.

Funny, I get "I should be doing something productive, like playing games" whenever I'm stuck watching TV or on reddit or something.
That's not to say I don't have a lot of productive pan on the stove: Audiobooking, reading, writing, making games, learning whatever new application picked my interest, making amazing avatars.
I just happen to include Game Playing as a productive activity, since it is something I have to actively engage in and is a challenge.

I think my mindset is just: is this activity going to improve my life in some way? This was especially bad in college where I thought to myself that coursework means more progress towards not making my time there a waste. Games do require some time investment and effort but that kind of makes it worse due to the inherent reward being an ending cutscene or something.

Umm... what if I'm not an adult? Welp, I guess I play as much as I did before I was 16 still!
Adult life sucks, cherish it, blaze it homie.

PROTIP: Adults are not Adults. There are no adults. There are just 16 year olds who now have to work enough to live and figure out what how the hell am I supposed to fill out this form. Understand and be terrified.
I'm not sure but probably less. It took me a year to finish Illusion of Gaia simply because I was busy. Xenoblade took about half a year. I started Terranigma months ago. I think it's amazing yet I've got sorta sidetracked. I seem to be going through SMT IV at a decent rate though and I recently beat Final Fantasy IX and it only took me 12 days. So, it's hard to say when I have such mixed figures.
I will say this, as I get older I tend to be pickier about what I play these days. I'm a bit less picky for RPG maker games though because the games are free and it's neat to see what people come up with.

For me, vidya is like comics or movies: something I need to do sometimes to give myself a break and replenish the creative resources. It's not healthy to be 100% work and productivity, especially if you work in a creative field. You gotta mix in some playtime to keep everything running properly, or else burnout is gonna get you.

This is the truest goddam thing. Though it's kind of liberating when you realize everyone is like this and nobody has had the magical adult switch in their head flipped. We're all just pretending we have a handle on life so we don't look bad in front of everyone else.

If only things were so ideal and simple. I never balance this basically.

What's stopping you?
I either never play games at all, or start to play a game, and then my gf complains that all I ever do is play that stupid game. So I stop for a long time. Rince repeat.
Managed to get through one quest path in Skyrim recently.

I've grown to dislike console games these days
Way less free time for gaming. But I squeeze it in somehow!
I think its like Sooz said about replenishing creative resources... maybe partially by reminding me what I love about games, so I can put that energy into what I make.
