For event games - by the deadlines.

For other games - I don't seem to finish.
In order of existential terror:

Three weeks.

A month.

A month and some change.

Two years.

Looking like three to four years (I hope).

You start to get a good feeling for how long things take once you're really familiar with your work habits; since that two-year game was my first project, by the time I got on this site, I was pretty comfortable in that department.

The time it takes often depends on the scale of the project itself and your own dedication to work on it. My shortest project took around 16 to 20 hours to make, but when I look back on it, if this wasn't an event with a deadline, I probably would have taken more time on it since there was no real pressure for me.

That, and there are things like real life interruptions, and even the process of revising ideas that don't work as well as you think can all add to the time for development. Experience counts, too, as trying to make things you aren't used to working with do stuff is always time-consuming. I can appreciate the guys who can make even decent games within a 2-day period in that regard, because it shows that they know quite a lot.
