GRANDIA 2 -- WHAT'S WITH THE HATE?

Posts

Pages: first 12 next last

Inspired by an old topic that Craze wrote some eons ago.

I've always been interested on why there are so many people hating this game. The biggest reasons that I can think of myself would be:

-The linearity. Yup, this is one of those games that are shaped rather strictly after the main storyline. I guess one of the biggest flaws would be that it's later in the game impossible to travel back to past areas. I would've loved to see some more stuff in this game, like optional areas, bosses, side quests etc. With such a great battle system and customization, I think it's kind of a shame that the game didn't supplement those areas more. :/

-The difficulty. Like I just said, it's a shame that the game doesn't offer much challenge when it's filled with so many interesting and fun mechanics. The game is just way too easy overall IMO. Most bosses are a joke (from a gameplay perspective, they're rad as hell otherwise); they simply don't pose a threat. It's so easy to keep on cancelling their "super moves" all of the time. If the boss does manage to hit the party somewhat hard, then it's no problem, since you can just heal everyone back to full health. I think it's kind of ironic that the remastered version has added a "Hard Mode" to the game. All it does is increasing the enemies' DEF & MDEF. WHY? Out of all of the stats, why chose to increase those? Increasing DEF/MDEF does not make the game harder in any way, it just makes the battle longer and adds unnecessary padding. Enemies needed to be more AGGRESSIVE AND HIT HARDER. Come on, game designers, get it together. :'(

Despite all of this however, I still enjoy this game quite a lot, mainly due to various things, like the music, characters, story, graphics, voice acting and rad animations (these deserve their own mention!). From what I've heard, most people hate the game because of these things (except for the music, everyone loves some Noriyuki Iwadare).

I'm interested to hear others' thoughts on the game and why they hate it. Thanks for reading and as always, I apologize for the poor grammar.
Oddly enough, though I played 1 and 3, I never played 2. I never managed to get my hands on a copy. Welp.
Well, if you enjoyed both, or one of them, then I'm pretty sure that you'll enjoy 2 as well. Here's your best bet if you plan on giving the game a go: http://store.steampowered.com/app/330390/
I haven't played the remastered version yet, but I plan on buying it pretty soon.
It's weird. I knew 2 existed (because it had to to be between 1 and 3) but I never really heard anything about it at all. Ever.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed 1 and 3 that much. They were okay, but not really games I liked too much.

Okay, weird, apparently I already own it. Must have bought it during a sale or something and forgot about it. Ooops! XD

Grandia II wasn't bad. When I first played it on the Dreamcast I absolutely loved the battle system, which took what made it fun in Grandia I and improved it! The story and characters weren't terrible either. Then my Dreamcast got stolen. I wanted to replay the game years later but I got the PS2 version which was a big mistake. That port lags so bad as to be almost unplayable >.<;;;

Anyways, news that this game is hated seems odd to me. I always heard of people hating on old Grandia I, which I can understand, as it's more about exploring new lands than a solid narrative, and progressing felt a bit grindy. I still enjoyed it, though yeah, it's far from perfect XD

As for Grandia 3, I initially skipped it because I heard the story was absolute garbage. Fast forward to like a year ago when I heard Craze talking about how fun it is despite the story being terrible. So I found a cheap used copy but I haven't started it yet (it's on my PILE OF SHAME that I'm slowly playing XD)

I bought 2 during the GOG Insomnia sale a few weeks ago. I'll play it eventually. A shame about the hard mode. I'll just run from battles a lot or something.

edit: unity i'm ashamed of your pile of shame

;_; I am too, Craze. I am too. The big question for me is, do I play Grandia III next or Xenosaga III?

@Liberty: Maybe it was because the game was originally for Dreamcast (which unfortunately died pretty fast). Also, if you already got, then you've got no excuse for not playing (muhahaha)! xD I'd love to see you stream/LP it though.

Unity: Your Dreamcast got stolen!? How? :O That sucks though. RIP Unity's Dreamcast. :(

I've heard the opposite about the hate. Most people seem to praise 1 as a masterpiece, mainly due to the game's sense of adventure, but hate on 2 because of its story/characters/voice acting/linearity/whatever. I never finished 1, but from what I played, it felt pretty linear as well, just like 2 did.

My pile of shame includes the SNES/Golden Era of RPGs and a lot more. Too much gam mak, too little gam.

@Craze: I'm trying to come up with ways to handicap myself more in order to make the game more challenging. Let me know if you come up with any fun ideas.
I've never heard this. The PS2 port is buggy, but the game is still pretty universally loved by JRPG fans and considered the best in the series.

I only ever had the PS2 port of this game, and suffered through the lag. Still, Ryudo and Skye are absolutely hilarious! I'm not sure I like that one dungeon that you're inside some...thing's body, and you hit stuff to move between zones. Or something. My memory is more than a tad fuzzy on this point, as one can tell.

Was it this game that the main protagonist gave up mid-to-late game, and a bunch of characters showed up to cheer him on, or was it the original Grandia? Darigaaz, I'm terrible.

*Edit: I remember that thread by Craze, and I still haven't touched Grandia 3. WEEEEEELP.
Maybe I'll stream it some time after I finish stardew joja run or the old man dating game. I also want to LP breath of fire II one of these days.

I, too, have many games in my pile'o'shame corner.
Yeah, I remember people always liking this one. I thought it was pretty good! The story didn't really hook me, but most games disappoint in that department. The gameplay was a lot of fun, though. Also, I haven't played Grandia 3, but I did play Grandia Xtreme, which, despite the lame name, was decently fun because of its progression elements.

I actually think the first Grandia was the best in the series, though. The story/dialogue had its share of cheese, and it kind of fizzled out in the last third or so, but despite being a cliche, I felt like Justin oozed naivete and clear-eyed optimism to the point where he felt like a legit depiction of a kid going on an adventure for the first time, and the plot for the first half of the game reinforced that and it made me feel like I was a kid going on an adventure for the first time, and I loved that.

It was dumbness on my part. A girl I was friends with in high school wanted to play Grandia II but didn't have a Dreamcast so I loaned it to her. She gave it back to me at school, and it got stolen while I was in the bathroom >.<;;;;;;;;

I actually find it rare to find someone who likes Grandia I. I always thought it was under-appreciated XD

YEAH! I felt like this is where Grandia I really shined! I really bought into the feeling of a naive kid on an adventure and it felt really cool! :DDDD
I've never heard of a bunch of people hating Grandia II. People don't like the PS2 port, but the game itself is liked enough.
If the PS2 port was anything like the FF4/5/6/CT PSX ports then yeah, I can see that being a thing. So it might be that any hate comments you heard are about the port (some people might have only ever played that version of the game, thus equating port=whole game). I mean, like I said, I never heard anything about 2 - if I hadn't played 3 I wouldn't have even known there was a series and would have figured Grandia as the only one.

I liked Grandia over 3, btw. Housekeeping summed it up really well - it made me feel like I was young and dumb and full of bright-eyed adventure too.

I'm pretty sure he's playable at some point in that game. However, as I recall it, your core party members outclass him so hard, it's not even funny.

YES AND IF YOU DON'T USE HIM YOU ARE LITERALLY THE WORST, the first half of the game isn't that hard anyway.

canaan and mizuki are playable too ~ but all three are only for a dungeon or two each, admittedly. the core playable cast is still shion/jin/jr/kos-mos/chaos/momo, although allen hangs around and is part of the story throughout, like normal. because he's the best

edit: uh yeah grandia 2. good game good game

Grandia 2 is one of my all time favorite games. The only real hate I can think of is from the PS2 version cause it had some issues.

Edit: Grandia 3 is something I really need to get around to beating. someday.

I've literally never heard of anyone hating Grandia II. Its graphics and perhaps voice acting are dated now but for the time they were very good. Also the soundtrack is rad.
