.: RMN GROUP :.

Introduction
Hello you may have seen me around the site, but allow me to introduce myself I am NoblemanNick, or NMN or Sir Nicholas Nicolas the Nobleman. We had start around in the summer a Dungeons and Dragons group. Sadly due to some incidents with my computer I was unable to DM for a couple of weeks and most of them forgot about it I believe. Last night we had a session but only two people including myself showed up and the experience was stale. So I'm making a new and updated version of this topic since the immense post count on the other one might scare those who would of joined before.

Sessions
Sessions usually take place on Friday nights, 9:00 US Eastern. But as many things that can always change, this is placed because it's Friday night many people don't have to worry about their work since it's the weekend, but of course there are a few exceptions. These session usually range from 9:00-12:00 US Eastern. If we are still in a encounter or skill challenge when the time hits 12:00 we will play until we finish said part and then we shall stop for the night. If the entire groups agrees this can extend to 1:00. But there are those such as myself that need to cuddle into their bed and hit the hay and watch TV.

Members
So far we will take all the members we have, but just to be safe the max member limit is members to keep a good party size. If we need to we can split the groups into two and conduct separate campaigns at different times and dates. Newcomers don't be afraid, when this group first started Shadowtext was DMing and I seriously wanted to play, I got the Rule Books and was able to learn and play as a newcomer. Anyone is allowed to join.

Activity
So to be a member in this group you have to be active in the group. If you can't come to a session for whatever reason please post or PM me and tell me that your not coming. If your running a little late, if all the members are not their by 9:00 we will wait 15 minutes before we begin, just to make sure if your running a little late. If the group sees collaboratively that you are not active enough, then we have the right to decide on vote whether you should be kicked out of the group. But also missing one night isn't going to matter. Missing five in a row will though. Also if you do not arrive at the session you might simply disappear or I might decide to NPC you, it counts on the situation and part of the adventure.

Campaign and Format
We will be conducting this in 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. It's the newest and probably the most newcomer friendly. This campaign we will probably being doing is a creation of mine called "The Legacy of Dragons" that I have created that will probably span over many adventures and sessions. I will be the Dungeon Master (DM) of the sessions, but if anyone wants to try their hand at it at certain times that is ok. it would be fun to sometimes play as a regular party member.

Tools
  • MapTools- MapTools is basically a virtual tabletop where we'll conduct our sessions. MapTools is used to create maps and has alot of tools to bring Dungeons and dragons to life. You'll need to download it and a Java starter.
    MapTools http://rptools.net/doku.php?id=maptool:intro
    Java http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Character Sheet- This is to be posted or PMed to me. I need your character sheet. I will provide a PDF version if you need one.
    http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/charactersheets

Ventrilo- This is basically a microphone talk online program that'll allow us to converse. We have used this before in the pass and it's a generally good program overall.
    http://www.ventrilo.com/

Custom Picture(Optional)- I have TokenTool so if you want a custom token for MapTools instead of me just giving you one, post or PM me the picture you want and I'll make one for you.

I suggest getting Shadowtext to help you out in this. This is right up his alley and I'm sure he'll help you out.

He was actually one of the members of the old group and the first DM.

Mog: Its the thought that counts!
Hmm sounds interesting, but I think I'll pass this one out, I'm currently playing 2 different D&D games every week, so that makes me way too busy for now ;)

Friday at 9:00 is not a great time (it's prime partying time, you guys) but I will give this a try once to see if it's any good. So, yeah, count me in for one of these fridays, but don't expect me to be a regular.

Okay, in order for me to play, I would need you to get me a link to or a PDF of the fourth edition rules (AM 2 BROKE TO BAI) and uh, yeah, I'd also like to know what level we're starting at.

That said...SHOTTY ON WIZARD.

Well I know GreatRedSpirit has a copy of it PDF file, because I have the real book. Also a Wizard would be great! In the campaign were only about half-way to level 2, it would great if you would join us.

Okay, so GRS or someone PM me a link to the Player's Guide or whatever and I can roll out a dude and submit it to you. (Or I could eventually get around to filching it from the interwebs myself.)
Yeah, I'm beginning to think Friday is the sticking point with me, too, Max. I'm finding work is getting too demanding for me to make it all the time and it's such a bother for a DM to come up with reasons to work a character in one week and not another. But it seemed like everyone had things to do on Saturdays when I was setting things up originally.

Otherwise I'd be willing to keep playing Freedom, even if I haven't quite found her voice yet.
I won't be able to make it this weekend as I'll be out of town.

Max: Did you get the PM about links?
(This seems to be a running theme at RMN now :\ )

No I didn't because PMs are retarded. I was able to (generally) make mine get through when sending them from the main site, NOT the forums. Try that?

Tonight we won't have DnD due to our still regrouping but next week we'll probably continue on with our campaign so see you all next week, we'll probably have a special long session for our reunioun of some sorts.

I think this topic will also become a vector for me ranting about how unbelievably shit the 4th Edition rules are all the things in 4th Edition that piss me off, your mileage may vary.

Let's start with alignment. As far as I can tell, they've made the "Morality For Dummies" alignment system even more idiotic and restrictive be eliminating the possibility of being Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Good, or Lawful Evil. WHAAAAAAAAT? I didn't think they could possibly make Alignment stupider, but they did.

I'm sure these things along with the races and classes they removed will be SOLD BACK TO US FOR MORE $$$ but that doesn't make me any less enraged.

1.) You can still play CN, LN, CG, and LE. It's just now they're not treated as game mechanics because all the game mechanics related to them were stupid, and no one could agree on the differences between them anyway.

2.) They took out races that didn't fit the new spirit they were going for or that were basically useless. Barely anyone ever played gnomes, and while more people played Half-Orcs, they've come out and said that the reason for not including that they didn't care for the ugly backstory it implies.

As for classes....there are 8 core classes included here, (3E only had, what, 9?) which cover a lot of ground, and a lot of the "classic classes" that they left out they still hadn't figured out how to fit in the new system yet. They weren't sure if Druids were controllers or leaders or what, for example.

And then there are some that they're just not going to give us back because they're unnecessary. The new way of handling the Wizard means that the Sorcerer is basically useless as we knew it. It sounds like they might change it into something different for a future sourcebook, but you're never going to get the old Sorcerer back.

Then why not just get rid of them all, for the same reasons. You can roleplay whatever alignment you want, but none of them should have game mechanics because morality is not absolute. And I feel there are disturbing philosophical implications to pairing LAW and GOOD and CHAOS with EVIL.

As for classes....there are 8 core classes included here, (3E only had, what, 9?) which cover a lot of ground, and a lot of the "classic classes" that they left out they still hadn't figured out how to fit in the new system yet. I always thought having wizard and sorcerer was stupid, and I also think gnomes and hobbits are gay, and that half-orcs are gimped to unplayability. I'm amazed how much Wizards AGREES with me on this shit.

However, I don't feel that the mystifying inclusion of the historically broken "Warlock" class or the choice that the vague "Warlord" class was a better alternative Fighter than Barbarian are any less weird or arbitrary than the array of classes presented in 3E. Likewise, the inclusion of Eladrins and Tiefling and Dragonborn but not Avorals seems weirdly asymmetrical to me, but maybe that's just me being OCD.

That said, I have...issues...with the role system I don't feel ready to discuss at this time. I guess that I don't agree with them taking their cues for how a ROLEPLAYING GAME should work from World of Warcraft. There's something recursively incestuous about it all, a closed loop and all that. More on this later, if I feel like it.
Gnomes are in the MM along with monster races that you can play as if desired. No Half-Orcs, but for me they were in the same pile as Elves in the "Don't touch ever" pile so I can't say I'm sad to see them go.

I think I'm going to play a Dragonborn, Eladrin, Tiefling, or human Wizard or Warlock.
The Warlord is more of an alternate Cleric or Bard than an alternate fighter. And if you want the Barbarian, Wizard's put up a preview of the class that they're playtesting for PHB2 now: http://www.wizards.com/download.asp?filename=368_Playtest_Barbarian.pdf

Say Nick--I think I'm going to try to make Fridays for now, if you don't mind. I'll probably be using Freedom Akta, but I might have an updated character sheet for her. If I don't have it by the end of the week, assume I'm using the old one.

Shadowtext, what class are you playing?

Other guys, what races are you?

Just for the sake of priority diversity, I'm trying to narrow my pick down to something that no one is playing.

And no, god no, I don't want the Barbarian. I hate everything about that class.

P.S.
Is voice-chat an absolute necessity? I don't have a microphone now (there is a really shitty one I might be able to find, but it sucks AND is lost) and am quite broke.
