And, what the hell is an emulator??

An emulator is a computer program that simulates a console and thus allows you to play console games in the computer.

Some emulators are easy to use, others are a bit more complex to setup, specially if you're not used to computers.

Anyways, the PlayStation 2 is a great console that allows you to play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, both consoles have a huge and amazing videogame library.

However I can't fully recommend getting a PlayStation 2 console secondhand, the hardware for these consoles is very frail and they usually stop reading discs after 2 years of intensive gaming.

There's also 3 models of the same console, the first version was big and square and there were a lot of faulty units, any of these nowdays are probably not working.
Then there's 2 smaller models, both of these overheat due to their size so you shouldn't play them for more then a couple hours at a time.
You want the second model, called V12 model number SCPH-700xx, the third and last model has compatibility issues and doesn't play some games.

So it's a great console due to the games it plays, but I'm worried you might not get as much out of it before it fails.
So don't spend too much money on the console if it's secondhand, if you manage to find a sealed new console for little money go for it.

You also need a PlayStation memory card to save in PlayStation games and a PlayStation 2 memory card to save on PlayStation 2 games.

The original PlayStation console only plays PlayStation games, but it's much more durable, if you find one nowdays secondhand it will still work fine as long as it was handled with care by it's previous owners. But it only plays PlayStation games, no PlayStation 2 games.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask ;)

Eat crow, emulator supporters!

You seem to mistakenly believe this is a competition. It is not.
You could, however, have used the space for that comment to answer Linkis question...

I'm actually pretty huge on emulation. Thanks (or no thanks?) to it, I've literally never touched a SNES in my life, but still managed to play FF4-6, among other games. However, this thread isn't necessarily about the benefits/complications of emulation. At least... I think it's not supposed to be?

On-topic, I would tend toward the Sony camp of this equation. Of course, I only had a PS2, and not an XBox or Gamecube (or Wii), so my opinion is notably skewed. Saying that, and can vouch for a number of games on/for PS2, plus various PS1 titles, thanks to the backwards compatibility that the PS2 had.
