THE EROTICISM OF CHALLENGE

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you can kill enemies before they get even a single attack most of the time, then I completely understand redoing the same fight several times. Otherwise you'd miss out on experiencing most of them entirely. Sadly, enemies that die before they even get a chance to act seem to be the default in most RPGs. I really feel like the absolute easiest enemies in most RPGs should die in about 4 hits, and about 10 hits should be the average for normal enemies. That means the first enemy in each battle goes down after 2-3 rounds.
In a way, making the player redo the fight 6 times is the same as giving them that extra HP. I guess? It might be more satisfying for some people to get the extra VICTORY!!! screens. For me personally it's more satisfying for each individual fight to actually feel like a bigger challenge.

Challenge is sexy.
In RPGs, there is challenge both in the battle and in the planning, and different people find one sexier than the other. Most people who like RPGs lean more towards the planning side than fans of other types of games.
If you simplify the planning to a very small number of choices, you take all the challenge out of it. FF4's planning and long-term strategy is completely unsexy, even the equipment choices are almost nonexistant, it feels like watching my 90-year-old grandma trying to do a belly dance and accidentally dislocating her hip in the process. FF Tactics's planning and long-term strategy gets me so fucking rock hard that the blood vessels on the sides of my dick burst open, and I have to call an ambulance but all I can manage to say to the 911 operator is "oh god, ohhhh godddddddd" and they're like "sir are you all right?" and I'm like "yesssssss, I mean no, I'm not, but ffffffUCK YYYYEEESSSS"
Did someone say "sexy"?

I've had this same problem with the first fight of my game. I want the enemy to buff their strength and get at least one attack in before they die, but it drags out the battle so much to have to give them enough HP to survive until that happens. Then again, I designed this part back before RM2k3 got the official English patch that improved the way the ATB works, so maybe...?
What if enemies could trade their buffs? Like they start out with a high DEF buff then when the strength buff is applied they lose the DEF. Hold off taking too much damage until you want the desired effect of a attack buff.

This still wouldn't really solve the problem seeing as it's still padding out what should be a quick battle. Not to mention the DEF buff would feel arbitrary and its removal would just bring it back to square one.
i think you're not fighting design, but rather the archaic program that you're using, corfaisus (and the nature of the ATB system, which is the slowest form of combat imaginable)
Basing any of your design inspiration on Dark Souls is a great way to make a garbage game that a handful of people obsess about but almost everyone never plays because it's broken trash under the guise of "challenge."

Yes, if you hate a game, then you should avoid every single thing that game does. Clearly you shouldn't have 3D graphics, or level ups, or stat points, or healing magic, because Dark Souls did those things and piemunch hates that game.
