WIN SOME // LOSE SOME - WHAT GAME DID YOU THINK WOULD SUCK WAS ACTUALLY AWESOME, AND VICE VERSA?
Posts
Dark Souls 2 I was soooo hyped for the second title... then it came out and in the first few minutes I "felt" it wasn't a "real" Dark Souls. Everything felt different. The atmosphere wasn't as tight as in the first game (expect for Majula), the controls had a strange way of responding (what often lead to my death), the character animations felt as if you would play a moving rock. Most enemies where just dudes with long ranged weapons or heavy tanks who roll on your face, when attacking from behind. The great leveldesign from DS2 was gone completely.
And it did look as if a bunch of kids made the graphics. Engine-wise it looked better. But it was a bit like beginners with RPG Maker. Big empty boring maps with lots of noticable tileable textures. DS1 had a way grungier look, felt super immersive and the levels looked like there could actually once lived some people in the areas. DS2 was just a bunch of randomly thrown together fantasy locations.... which you couldn't even explore a lot.
Dark Souls 3
After DS2 I didn't expected anything at all from 3. In the end... the game was much better that 2, but not nearly as great as DS1 or Bloodborne. Super unfair double-Bossfights everywhere included. (The ones, where you defeated a Boss just to see him fill up his healthbar again and enter into a complete different fight style -.-)
But all together I enjoyed the game.

Spore
Obvious. I was SO into this game. Didn't read reviews or anything leading up to nor during playing. So it was a true blindside to find every expectation I had for this game to fall on its ass.
Sadness.
Metal Gear Solid V
Same sentiment: It doesn't feel remotely like a Metal Gear game, and the story is all but absent. The point of the game was to BE Venom Snake. Really invest in his character, without being shoveled cinematics or dialogue to tell you who he is. Legend of Zelda's Link doesn't talk at all for this very reason. You are Link. Here, you are Big Boss. You run the base. You save the day. You do it all.
And then best of all...
spoiler:
The gameplay, however WAS something to write home about. I loved it. Even though it wasn't really MGS anymore, I still played the shit out of it. Loved it. Blew my mind away.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Fell flat. The series being so awesome to this point goes back to Liberty City, with a revised map, waaaay better graphics and controls, gets the worst, least interesting character I have ever had to play as. GTA4 had sequels/spin offs I had no interest in, after quitting halfway through the core game. Nico can choke on an American hotdog, for all I care.
RedDeadRedemption and GTAV are leagues better.
Disney Infinity
If you know anything about me, know that I spent years absorbed in LittleBigPlanet1&2&psp. Defining moment for gaming, for me. When game making and gaming become one and the same.
Enter Disney Infinity. Cool/nice statues of Disney characters, and a similar concept... buy IN DISNEY WORLDS?!?
Yeah, no. Expensive statues, over time, and the worst gameplay since movie adaptions for PSX.
And the Disney Worlds, are little more than laughable level editor messes. I seriously HATE Infinity. I'm happy they're discontinued it after Finding Dory.
Sonic series after Sonic Adventure
Oh, I should add this. I am a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I love the style of anthros, I love the Blue Blur himself. I watched the cartoons. and played the games. and even (sad to admit) had Sonic as a continuous mainstay cameo in an old fanfic I had.
Sonic was Sega. and Sega was cool.
Sonic Adventure showed up, and there was a playable demo in EB games. My jaw dropped, and I was among the many who were blown away!
After that, I had a Dreamcast. Of COURSE I had a Dreamcast. It was dope!
And then Sonic Adventure 2 came. It was prettier than Adventure1, but the levels were different, Knuckles had rap music dig levels, and a whole lot of weird changes. It wasn't even that fun! But ho, I persevered, because SONIC. The next and the next and the next came. Each one more and more disappointing. Each one worse than the last. I have now given up hope. And couldn't enjoy the Sonic 4 attempt. It's just... done. Sad. My favourite vg character. Done.
Shenmue
When my friend described the gameplay of Shenmue I looked at him funny and laughed. You walk around and look for sailors? Spend your days playing arcade games? You are a forklift driver? Da fuq.
I played it anyway. Single favourite experiences as a gamer was finishing that game. I haven't got around to 2 yet, but it's on my shelf, waiting for me.

It turns out you aren't even Big Boss at all! And the fact that you lead into NES Metal Gear as the doomed 'Big Boss' who dies by Solid Snake's hand, is just amazing. Amazing!!!
Such a pay off for an otherwise stupid story/game.

UnderTale, Eternal Sonata and Unlimited Saga are all games I liked, but also delivered exactly the expectations I had for them and wouldn't be suitable for me to list.
Dragon Quarter was probably my biggest disappointment ever. I never really like the Breath of Fire series too much because they were are all way too hard and tedious to play with lack of save points. Then my friend told me that Dragon Quarter is completely different and I'd probably like it (because he hates it and I had like the opposite taste of him) and when I read that it has on-screen combat like Chrono Trigger combined with a turn-based battle system in the style of Shining Force, I was kind of expecting the perfect game for me. In the end, in only 5 minutes play time, the game managed to ruin all my possible enjoyment I could have had with the game. I never hated a game this fast before and it's still my most hated game ever.
Brave Fencer Musashi is a game I usually never talk about but comes to my mind in this thread. I once played it over at a friend and didn't like it. I really hated Zelda and all games like it at that time. I was never into real time combat and the idea of only playing a single character for the whole game seemed horrible to me. Then two years later, my parents wanted to surprise me with a game I didn't even put on my wishlist, so they went to an import shop (since good games back at that time weren't released in Europe) and asked if there is any good RPG and the shop owner apparently suggested Brave Fencer Musashi to them, so they bought it. Needless to say that I couldn't hide my disappointed face when I got it and ever since then my parents are so branded, that they never dared to buy me any other videogame anymore ever. But it wouldn't be green if that's the end of the story, right? I didn't even touch the game for another two years, but then I was kinda bored and had nothing to play and I went through my games and found it again, collecting dust. So I was like, why not give it a second chance. So I played it again and suddenly I really got into it. I like the humor and the gameplay and learned to ignore the parts that annoyed me heavily (like the time system) and then the last dungeon... man it was so brilliant. I loved it so much that I did the final part of the game 3 times in row. Too bad I still couldn't convince me parents to continue buying surprise games for me anymore.
There are also pretty many RPG Maker games where I was like "Wow, I didn't expect them to be this good" like Whisper of a Rose, Star Stealing Prince and The Amber Throne.

Oh yeah, those game engines are clunky as fuck. Severely disappointed in the lack of effort into the physics and engine for INFINITY. Describing it as a PSX level 3D platformer is apt. The game worlds themselves are also very dull and mostly devoid of the charm of whatever movie they are based on. Not too surprising Disney is pulling the plug. Hopefully they learned their lesson about shoveling out shitty games. (ha!)
The figures are pretty sweet, though. And far more durable than Amiibos, let me tell you!
Oh, are the Amiibos kinda lackluster? They always looked pretty swank to me. I'm glad my kids weren't around to bug me about Infinity, Spyro, or Amiibos.
Amiibos are cool looking but they don't stand up to repeated beatings by a 3yo.
As for functionality, they are mostly irrelevant to whatever game they are supported in. But it is nice that they are supported in many games instead of tied to just one.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2
The reviews I kept reading were that the game itself was fine, but totally unmemorable and stagnant. I wholeheartedly disagree. As a fan of the series for about a decade now (my first game was RE DS, then the REmake, then RE4, then eventually every main game), Rev 2 is one of my favorite games in the series for two reasons:
Reason 1: It finally realized how cheesy and over the top the story and tone was and decided to run with the corniness rather than try to play it straight. From the groan-inducing puns to Barry's lame dad jokes to hilarious references to previous games, it was so exciting to see the game actually embrace it's B movie storyline and stop taking itself so seriously, which ironically made me take it way more seriously. It's like a cringy teenager finally learning to lighten up.
No joke, the final battle of the true ending might just be one of my favorite moments in all of RE history, because it perfectly encapsulated the tone, lore, and references with it's awesome new partner mechanics for a fight that I still remember to this day.
Reason 2: It found the perfect solution to Cc-op. RE5 and 6 were fine games, but the biggest problem was that there's little to no tension having two characters gunning down enemies. REV 2 takes away guns from a co-op partner, but gives them unique abilities that the traditional gun users don't, like detecting and marking enemies. In addition, finally giving single players the option to switch partners with the push of a button meant that you could finally make use of both characters' abilities, making them feel like an organic team rather than two copy/pasted characters.
I will be VERY upset if future RE games degrade back into cringe territory after having played this gem.

Bioshock 2 Went into this one expecting to hate it, as everyone said it was just a lame rehash of the first - ended up loving it more than the original. True, the story wasn't as great, but damn, the fights were sooo much better. I really felt like a nigh-unkillable bad ass by the end.
Honestly I never understood the hate for Bioshock 2, yeah its a little of the same but with minor improvements, but how is that a bad thing? I found the duel wielding much easier to use and much more fluid to use. And your playing as a big daddy how is that not the best thing ever?!
On that note.(Reminded me when he spoke of bioshock)
Bioshock When this game was being teased and coming out, I wasn't impressed. At all. I actually didn't play this game till 2014. When I did I discovered my favorite fps of all time, having plenty of abilities and guns. And giving free reign with all said abilities and guns. made it so much fun to play and I loved it instantly. I've played through it a good 2 and half times. Speaking of that I need to go back and play it sometime.
A few more, that I had just thought of.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Good God, this game. I bought this game just out of curiosity. But after many hours of playing it, and still haven't beaten it. This is probably one of, if not my personal favorite rpg of all time. I haven't decided fully on that one yet, because Xenoblade is also getting close to that status. The world, the graphics, the simple yet deep game-play, the side quests. Everything about the withcer 3 just ticks the right boxes for me. One of the 2 games that I actually scored a 10/10 in my life. and that other game is Red Dead Redemption
OnimushaBought this from a retro game store, for about 5 bucks. I thought it would be an okay game. Ended up loving it, I wouldn't say its perfect far from it. But its a fun game non the less, I really liked the game-play the most, the story and characters eh, it was interesting that they took nobunaga and made him into a demon overlord but it was okay at best. I really need to get the other 2 games when I can.
I don't remember the last time I was let down by a game, but there are some that gave me mixed feelings
Bioshock:Wow, a spiritual successor to System Shock 2? One of my favorites games? I have to try it!... but in the end, it was just "okay", I mean, the graphics are really awesome, the really set the mood, and it gives you freedom to try different weapons and skills builds, but... Many times while playing I keep saying "This is cool, but SS2 is better", I dunno, I just lost the interest after reaching Arcadia
Undertale: While I liked how original compared to standard rpg it was, I just... played... got the best ending, and... that's it, I don't care about it anymore, yeah, is something new and different, but it's... kinda overrated, and I don't even gonna mention the fandom...

Bioshock, there was so much hype around the game and I thought it would be good. People talked about System Shock as the best thing ever. I tried the abandonware version waybackwhen. Wasn't a huge fan. But I was a huge fan of Deus Ex which the game seemed a lot like to me. So I was probably dumb but thinking "hmm, maybe this will be as awesome as Deus Ex". But the only reason for that was that Bioshock was semi-but-not-at-all connected to System Shock (2), which had an interface similar to Deus Ex.
I've tried to like Bioshock. It has its moments. But... It's not for me. It's from that era when the "consolification" of FPSes were at its peak and it really shows.
Grand Theft Auto 3, this one I thought was overhyped and would probably be shit. But eventually after a couple of years I finally gave in and played the game in question.
And it was great. Like really, really great.

Have you seen the trailer and demo game-play to resident evil 7? .....As huge fan of the series as well, I don't know what to think about it..
Also I agree with you on Revelations 2, its better than people say it is. Its hilarious how self aware and dumb it is, its fantastic, I loved it.
Also I have one more
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion I have tried time and time again, to get into this game and never could. I'm playing it currently, and I think I know why....This game is boring!! The world is so flat, nothing interesting at all in this game, it really feels like someone made this with a computer than a real breathing world, I can't get immersed in. The dungeons are all horrible with loot that sucks, the character enemy models suck, the leveling system is broken, want to know how to level up fast? Pick Acrobatics as one of your major skills and jump every where you go, and it also doesn't help that if you don't level up minor skills you won't get enough level up points for your character and since the game scales with you, you will be fighting tough enemies that make the game a sudden spike of difficulty. Side quests are all boring and mean nothing because you don't earn exp from them, making them useless doesn't matter most of them suck anyway, I don't even want to try shivering isles because Its more less more of the same boring broken game play that Oblivion is. Maybe I would have liked this game more if I played it back then, but I didn't. It just does not hold up well at all.
Okay sorry rant over. Can someone please tell me if Skyrim is any better? Because I wanted to give this game a chance but I just can't.

Actually, I love Skyrim, and I frankly think Oblivion is far superior. The real appeal of these games is the ability to explore. Do you're own thing and you won't believe all the stuff you can do. Add a few mods and generally act like a dick to the NPCs and the games get hella fun. Add an invincibility mod and start breaking laws; hours of fun for the sadist in you. Once you start following the rules of the game and obeying the story line, they actually start to get kind of monotonous. Boring even. They're shitloads of fun if you run around starting crap with NPCs, though.
Eternal Sonata was a GREAT looking game (one of the best looking RPGs I've ever seen) but boy did it stink. The story was terrible (honestly, I only got like 25% of the way through so maybe it gets better?), the dungeons are boring (after a strong start they get weak really fast) and although the fighting is fast and fluid, it gets really repetitive really quickly. It also has the worst cutscenes I've ever seen. Terrible direction, pacing and dialogue (also dreadful voice acting). I was excited going in, then I saw the first cutscene. Then I got to the gameplay and got excited again, but quickly got bored after seeing how frequently you fight the same mobs over and over.
Spore was a game I picked up after it'd been out for awhile. I didn't really read a lot of reviews. It ended up being fun while I figured it out, and then it quickly got boring. The RTS segments stunk.
Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance isn't a bad game, but it really did not live up to my hopes. I love, love, loved FFT for PSX (it's why I bought a PSX!), but they changed too many of the mechanics in FFT:A and limited the job system too much by race. I really liked the graphics and music, and the game was still fun, but just really fell short for me.
Final Fantasy XII was the first 3D FF I'd played in awhile. I had mixed feelings about it going in, since for some reason I'd never really made the transition to 3D FFs and I'd heard a LOT of bad things about the game. I ended up loving the fighting system and the job board (I know you can eventually make all your characters super humans, but I just didn't and everything was fine), and I felt the dungeons were a lot of fun to explore (if confusing as heck). I still go back and play it from time to time.
edit: Oblivion is a great game exclusively for its exploration elements. The combat isn't that fun, the levelling system is hopelessly stupid (and punishes you for levelling your major skills), most of the quests are boring and just require fast-travelling everywhere in quick hops (not all of the quests, mind you), and the balancing is almost game-breakingly bad. I still have an absurd number of hours logged in it because I enjoy it despite its flaws, but I do tend to yell at my screen from time to time.

I'll add to this some more!
Yo-Kai WatchI thought this was a pokemon rip off when it first came out, months later I bought into it. I ended up really loving this game! The battle system is a little frustrating but unique and fun. The game has a charm, to it that makes it fun and addictive. I love the designs of a lot of the Yo-Kai, and the soundtrack is really fun and upbeat. I'm still a pokemon fan more, but this is a fun little game to keep the wait for sun and moon bearable, and call me a baby but the yokai watch toy is also really cool! Also I can't wait for Fleshy Souls and Bony spirits!

I recently have been itching for some puzzle gaming so I got Mr. Driller for the Playstation, which I thought was gonna be a neat puzzle game. Turns out it was decent... For about an hour. After playing it for that long you've basically seen all there is to see in the game and while you could probably spend a couple more hours getting marginally better, I don't feel like it since it's not very rewarding to do so... Sometimes blasts from the past aren't all that great.
Recently started playing some World of Warcraft
I find it to be relaxing, the games so easy I don't have to really think at all.
Just grind, or quest.

I played the DS Sonic collection, it was so-so but I played the games already so they were less annoying. The DS collection is probably not the best way to play the games for the first time since they cut off part of the screen in order to fit on the DS. For a game based around speed and being able to react, even trimming a few rows of pixels is very bad. But then again nobody seems to get this, and Sega continues to repeat the same flaw in every new 2D Sonic title including the upcoming Sonic Mania. (although at least that one is 16:9, and seems to have slower gameplay like the classics)
I recently played Tiberian Sun again, since it's freeware now and I never beat the Nod Firestorm campaign so I decided to do that. My, how this game aged poorly. I love the atmosphere, soundtrack, art direction, and unit design to this game a whole lot, and that makes it sort of a classic to me, so it kind of pains me to say that the campaign is poorly set up and a chore to play through, and many of the missions are abysmal, frustrating, poorly designed (Nod base mission that can easily be completed before even a single chemical missile becomes ready) or downright near impossible. (Hammerfest Base for GDI, Capture Jake McNeil for Nod, etc) The volume settings also also out of whack, but no matter how you adjust them it is impossible to hear anything during the FMV cutscenes. (not to mention the cutscenes are an optional download now, meaning why would anyone bother to download them?) However, afterwards I played the original Command Conquer and that game is far worse. It is pretty much unplayable.
Mr. Driller - I bought the PSone classic, I thought it would be a slam dunk since I loved each of the three Mr. Driller games I played up to that point. (Mr. Driller 2, Drill Spirits, and Drill Till you Drop) But this was a disappointment. The music was eh, the colors look crappy, and the PSP dpad felt a little too big to work well with the game. (although you could hardly blame the game for that) Chalk another one up to early installment weirdness.
