RTP VS. CUSTOM GRAPHICS

I don't feel like a game i make is truly mine if i'm using resources from other people. I don't know if anyone feels that way but that's how i feel at least.

That's absolutely how I feel.
Learning how to make art assets isn't going to hurt you, even if you don't end up going down the road of getting into pixelart or otherwise.

@Cap_H - I think The Longing Ribbon wants a word with you about the idea that only generic fantasy can use RTP tiles. ;p
Your two best rated games are Noble Quest and Dungeon Crawler by the way (I know I'm cheating and I know, I don't have two games to talk about).
I'm not against RTP by any means. I adore Corf's work, which would be worth an RTP Studies diploma. And Hero's Realm of course.
I'm just sayin that it is easier to stand out even with shitty customs made in MS Paint. Cavern of Doom would be solid if it was created with RTP. 15x20 resolution makes it a classic. From trillion of Halibabica's Spelunky clones the one using ASCII is the most notable.
Those ratings are less to do with the graphical stylings than the gameplay aspects, though (I mean, sure, they are a part of it, but it's mainly the fact that both games are quite different to the usual jRPG thang - one is a top-down dungeon crawler without battles and basically a dating sim, the other is a very fast-paced RPG, but was a collaborative effort). Also, they're some of the few games I've actually released. Most of my RTP-based games just aren't out there for people to play, so you can't really judge based on them.
I mean, the ones that people pester me about the most are the RTP-based ones (and Dungeon Crawl, but that's because it's such a different kind of game top-down puzzle dungeon crawl dating-sim-esque choice-based RPG). My highest scored one has no graphics whatsoever. The ones with the most reviews are RTP based - Wolf and Kid, Seer Dell, Realms Shattered, Celdran's Curse, Her Dreams of Fire...
In fact, my top five most downloaded games are (discounting the team games like THaNoY and Befuddles) basically RTP games. 5th is Dungeon Crawl (custom w/rips), 4th is RealmS (RTP w/edits), 3rd is Celdran's Curse (RTP w/edits), 2nd is Sound of Flames (no graphics) and 1st (by a long margin) is Seer Dell: Dragon (RTP-only game made in 24 hours >.<; )
It's a bit of cherry-picking on your part since the ones you cite as my best are equal in amount as those who use RTP/no graphics (of the 4-star games I have 2 are custom graphic, one is RTP and one is no-graphic). Not the best basis of an argument for. XD
Now that isn't me saying "Use RTP all day erry day". It's me saying "Don't use my games to support your argument by cherry-picking because it doesn't work - there's a lot more to it than just one or two people's personal opinions (reviews) which can be discounted by using other of my games to contrast." ;p
I find that RTP is fine, other people do not. That's 100% their choice. If you feel that you can't claim ownership on your own style because it uses RTP, that's fine - use your own custom work. (I have no problem with that particular issue, myself. )
I do recommend making a start on creating your own stuff, though. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll get better at it. In the meantime, if you want to use RTP, go for it. No one is going to fling shit at you for it (or at least, anyone who does is a fuckwit whose opinion shouldn't count.)
To be utterly honest, when I'm doing my own tiles, I'm checking on RTP all the time. It was cherry picking from my side, but I can't help myself, I like Girlpool too much.
I must that It is extremely different to use RTP style or RTP. I guess, that DS packs or REFMAP or Mac and Blue (I hope M&B are rips and not something from McDonald) are at least as overused as RTP Style. And for example I really dig Celdran's Curse. That one is beautiful or these games from Gibmaker all use RTP style with assets of his own.
RTP or not, you need to give your game a personality. Having a castle title screen or screenshot with vx ace grass as a game page picture doesn't help.
I would love to see another Map Madness episode.

Mack and Blue is REFMAP (and completely custom). >.<)b
maybe I'll revive Map Madness this year some time.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.
