NINTENDO'S NEXT SYSTEM IS... THE NES!

The Nintendo Entertainment System, unarguably one of the most iconic game consoles of all time, is relaunching this fall, the game company announced on Thursday. Dubbed the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic, the console will ship to stores on November 11 and come in at a retail price of $60.

The full list includes Balloon Fight, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Final Fantasy, Galaga, Ghosts' N Ghoblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, StarTropics, SUPER C, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

The controllers will also be able to be plugged into your Wii controllers, for use on the Wii/Wii U. It's a smaller replica of the original NES. It doesn't have the ability to play NES catridges (pity!). It's like one of those Atari or Namco themed "controllers" that you'd plug into your TV and play PacMan or Super Breakout.

I wonder if the list of games is expandable somehow...
Can you use original nes cartridges?

Edit: I forget reading that. Oh, that's bad.
As a filthy nostalgia grognard... I'd totally buy an emulation box with some NES games for it for $60! That's right up my alley!

I'd assume if sales (and licensing) works out the games library'll be expandable. The whole thing is probably just a stripped down Wii/U that only has the virtual console accessible on it. Make sure it has wifi and open up its store to the rest of the Wii/U's virtual console library for the same price and rake in the dough!
The money is on it being a stripped down 2DS, which means that SNES emulation isn't in the cards.

I still might buy this for the boys, though. We'll see. If it is expandable, I'd probably get it (despite already owning a 2DS, 3DS, Wii, and Wii U, and 3 NESes and an SNES and a N64 all handy). I'd buy an SNES one in an instant, though.
2DS makes sense, yeah. No need for all the Wii/U's power and cost when it's just running an NES emulator. I'd totally buy a SNES one too, the SNES owns.

(really one of these days I should just get a HTPC and a frontend for emulators or something, but I guess part of the price of Nintendo's offering is not having to roll out your own shit)
I have a SNES but I'd still buy the hell out of a SNES one because yes please.
I've got two SNES consoles. One American and one European. ;)

It makes sense. They haven't made a fun game in ~15 years, so might as well go back to what worked for them.
Kinda scratching my head at this move.
Are they cashing on nostalgia? I do not see any other reason.
All those games can be easily emulated or bought on virtual consoles. Not sure how many are there on VC but still...

This is a neat thing, though one which doesn't directly appeal to me for specific reasons.

It would be grand, though, if console makers would instead put out their own "retron" systems. Systems which would allow the customer to play original carts and discs (or buy and download) of all their previous out of print systems.

I was really excited to buy a retron system until I realized they were just emulators that download the roms from the carts.

If these systems instead were the actual hardware all bundled together, it would be... so amazing.

Can you still buy slim PS2's? I dont' know, it's been a while since I've seen one in the wild.

It looks cute, but I would prefer to have a original one with cartridges. Cartridges rule and should return.

Just let the baby have his bottle. He's not harming anyone.

This seems pretty cutesy, for 60$ it's not really terrible either, although I doubt that I'd drop that much on it personally. I'm definitely on board with Hexatona in that it'd be interesting to see an official retron type thing come from either Sega or Nintendo in the future. Having an expandable games list would be neat as well, but being a plug-n-play console it seems pretty out of the question.

I'm just imagining sitting it on top of a normal NES. The NES pyramid.
I think it's a cool idea.

It's not marketed toward you or me or most of the people on this forum, no. It's for your friend who doesnt play much, your cousin, your mom who played one or two games and would like to relive them the way they remembered.

It would make a great holiday gift for a family member.

You're in luck. Nintendo are rumoured to be considering cartridges for their next-gen console. It actually makes sense now that flash-storage can easily compete with discs in terms of raw memory, and cartridges would make it much harder for pirates to copy games.

This also lends credence to the rumour that the NX is also portable, as cartidges don't 'skip' like a disk would.

Nintendo REALLY has to release some details here. The rumours and expectations are going to bury them.

It will sell. Because nostalgia and because cool selection of games for $60 with little hassle to setup.
I think all of those are on VC, but you'll spend more money buying each one individually, and unless you buy an old school NES type controller you'll have to play with a different one.
Sure, they can be emulated easily, but I would consider buying one for that price, specially since I never got to own a NES.
I wonder about the video out options.
