XENOGEARS APPRECIATION/DISCUSSION/WHATEVER THREAD.

A world war. Giant robots. Government conspiracies. A plan to find God for selfish reasons. Sand pirates. A guy with amnesia. This is Xenogears.

Xenogears is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and for a lot of reasons. For one, I definitely love the setting and atmosphere it sets for itself. Giant robots, Gears, rule the day, replacing men on the battlefield, and I love the atmosphere of the war between nations Aveh and Kislev. Second, the music is one of the best ever heard in video games. And third, the story is definitely one of the most insane I've ever played in an RPG. Seriously, the story is more complex and has more to it than several Final Fantasies combined, and that's usually the biggest draw to it.

Don't get me wrong, I know Xenogears is a flawed game. It's battle system wasn't quite as awesome in practice as it was in theory (although the Deathblow system and the Triangle/Square/X battle system was the absolute best I've ever seen), the story can get convoluted at times, and the 2nd Disk was well...But still, Xenogears has managed to be up there in rank in my RPG collection.

Discuss!
I think I would've enjoyed Xenosaga a lot more if I hadn't been constantly hoping it was going to be an opportunity to get Xenogears remade with a proper budget, and if I hadn't kept comparing it to some of the coolest aspects of Xenogears (and conveniently ignoring the flaws therein).

I love Xenogears, but it had so much wasted potential that it's a little depressing.

Squenix and Monolith Soft need to work out a deal where they give me the license and a few million dollars to make a proper Xenogears.
Indeed one of the bestest RPGs ever (me being a giant robot AND sci-fi/fantasy fan has a lot to do with it :P).

The story only falls on 2nd CD really, as the exploration too (which was awesome before that, I loved Bledavik, best desert town ever!).

The gears were mostly nice (not tottally awesome because I missed more armaments for then, I´d leave the kung fu for the pilots), not to mention that system option (coolest gear attacks) were quite lame in action (Yggdrasil bombardment should be the most damaging attack for a gear but it took less than Fei punching with his bare hands :P).

Also the deathblow blows off the need for Ethers after certain point. In fact, only used healing ethers. Even so deathblow really owns like hell XD Specially Barth, Citan and Billy :D (oh and Eme-chan too, Dark Beast and drill kick ftw!).

The setting is really well developed with great NPCs and a lot to see and do in great detail and my favourite graphical style: 3D objects/setting with 2D characters.

Xenogears is one of my inspirations for my project =^.^=

Btw Fel, ever got to read the Xenogears complete Works? :)

Shadowtext: As long as I can be the mecha designer I will hope for the impossible with you XD

Ether Doubler+Power Magic=9999 constant damage would like to speak with you.

Yeah, I've read a LOT of Xenogears Perfect Works, and there's translations all over the web. There's a complete translation that's currently in the works as well. Here's a cool site that contains translations, it's old, but it's still pretty accurate.

Oh I know that site too (and hey, Sigurd REALLY look feminine in that Element outfit...) =^.^=

And well yeah Ethers actually became helpful to me inside gear for the final battle, Emeralda with everything to boost Ether :D

But ouside gear... deathblows did 9999 without relying on mp and it was basically impossible to miss the commands (unlike Legend of Dragoon).

I could never finish this game, though I tried (and never when it was new). Everything about it (battles, dialogue, everything) just seemed long winded and tedious.

Man, I love this game, but I have to admit, it was so hard getting past the second disk. Watching some dude sitting on a chair and directing you to random places just got tiring after awhile, but if you have the patience, you are definitely in for a treat.
I only got as far as the sewers, I tried looking into gamefaqs or something, but it's just impossible to find out exactly where I am. Great game and story, it's like Gundam and final fantasy put together.

It's more like Evangelion than Gundam. Which, if anything, hurts it a bit.

UGH

Xenogears is not a very good game. The storyline is fueled with overly symbolic nonsense. You can give or take that one.

But the game plays slower than any other RPG I've touched. The menu takes about five seconds to even OPEN. The title screen takes forever. The messages take forever.

I must say I really enjoyed the in-engine cutscenes, however. But this is absolutely not a game anyone should aspire to create.
Like I said, it's not a perfect game. However, I never really understood the gripe with the symbolic stuff. The storyline is easily intact if you were to take it all away. If you were to change say, Kislev, Shevat, and Zohar to say, Bobtown, Lazy Village, and Giant Battery, the storyline would be exactly the same, so it's easy enough to ignore.

However, while I can understand the gameplay being slow, I for one was never bothered by it because if I'm playing a video game, I'm maxing and relaxing anyway, the world tends to slow down.

That's exactly the problem most people have with it. Because it's full of Abrahammic symbolism, people in the west get upset when it's used without making a point, even if they have no particular affiliation to Judaism, Christianity or Islam, because it's been such a big part of our history that it some people get a bit tetchy when it's treated the same way we treat the mythology of....well, every religion that doesn't descend from Abraham.
I dunno, a complex story doesn't necessarily mean its good. I frankly stopped paying attention to it halfway through after I lost track of who did what and why Fei and Elly had split-personalities or what not.

The music was very good though! The battle system was a good idea, but it could've been executed a lot better. This would actually be a pretty good game to remake, I think!

No, I really only illustrated that because there are a lot of stories that have overly simple plots when it could have been a little more.

And if you think Xenogears is too complex, try out the Xenosaga Trilogy. Those games are complex as FUCK.

Everything about it (battles, dialogue, everything) just seemed long winded and tedious.

wut

I can agree that Gear battles can be somewhat tedious at first. However, the character battles were the best presented thing ever at the time. Selecting 'Attack' and going into a long, customizable string of attacks that ends in a neat finishing move is tons more interesting than selecting 'Attack' and getting 'HIT ENEMY WITH SWORD'.

Yeah, I agree with Mog at the last point. Though Xenogears storyline was a bit over the top for some folks, I thought Xenosaga's storyline .... made no sense. The only other game that could rival the Xeno series's "wtf"ness is Chrono Cross.
Maybe it's just because I've read the Wheel of Time books, but I didn't have too much trouble following Xenogears' twists and turns. Maybe in part because I could tell characters apart just by looking at them.

Oh yes, the music is very good. They should find a different game to use the soundtrack for.
Oh come on. It wasn't that bad.
Also, I have to say that Xenosaga's visuals were a downgrade in comparison to Xenogears.

Not graphics wise, but in terms of environments. Xenogears had all sorts of various looks and locales, like the Middle Eastern look of Aveh, the gritty industrialism of Kislev, the beautiful landscape of Shevat, and so on. Xenosaga for the most part has just cold, sterile, and relatively boring space ships and facility corridors. Which is a shame because the large scale cities (that you never really get explore like you should) are nice to look at, and the few natural landscapes you do visit in Xenosaga III are just downright gorgeous.

Song of Nephilim in 1 wasn't bad.
