ASSISTED SUICIDE

I give credit where credit is due. I took this topic word for word from the IDEA website.
Assisted Suicide, also called Voluntary Euthanasia, is currently a contentious issue in many countries. The question in the debate is this: if a terminally ill person decides that they wish to end their life, is it acceptable for others to assist them? This would normally take the form of a doctor administering a lethal injection, which would end their life painlessly. A clear distinction must be made with involuntary euthanasia, by which someone is ‘put down' against their wishes, and which is simply murder by another name. In the United States, Dr Jack Kervorkian â€" nicknamed ‘Doctor Death' for his actions beliefs â€" has been campaigning for a change in the law for many years, and has assisted in the suicide of at least 45 people; he was recently found guilty of second degree murder and imprisoned after a widely publicized trial. In the Netherlands, on the other hand, voluntary euthanasia has been legal since 1983, with some 3,000 people requesting it each year. In Australia, assisted suicide was legalized in the Northern Territories with the backing of a substantial majority of the local population, but was then overthrown by the Federal Senate before anyone could actually use the new law.
In this thread discuss : if a terminally ill person decides that they wish to end their life, is it acceptable for others (physicians) to assist them?

Let's find a rock
I mean a big-ass rock
Or maybe something like
A cinder block is better
I'll hoist it up
And drop it on your face, my buddy
And just before the lights go out
You'll see my smile and you'll know
You've got a friend
With a rock
Who cares
I mean a big-ass rock
Or rope
I got some quality rope
Made for a man who's devoid of hope
Like you are, my buddy
Michael -
Unh, that's Malcolm.
Malcolm. Right!
And I won't leave you swinging there
Twitching like a fish while you claw the air
I'll grab your feet
And pal o' mine
I'll pull real hard
And snap your spinal cord
The world is cold whn you're alone and
They ignore you
But don't kill yourself
We'll do it for you
You've got a friend
You know, I asked a guy once if he'd mind putting me in a barrel
and sending me over the falls.
You know what the son of a bitch said? "Drop dead, asshole."
People are pricks. I asked this guy to take his air compressor
and drill me with a six-inch nail right through the eye...
What'd he say?
"I'm low on nails."
People are selfish pricks.
Another time, now get this,
I just lay down in front of a steam roller and asked the guy just to proceed,
you know, business as usual, and just squash me like a bug.
That's a good way to go, Jer, the ol' bug squash.
We could tie a plastic laundry bag over his head.
Naw, that's such a wimp suicide.
I stuck my finger in a socket once. It hurt real bad...but it didn't kill me.
Malcolm, stay out of this.
I've got a friend
Like Carole King
Or was it Carly Simon
Used to sing?
I always get those two confused
But anyway -
I turned around
And suddenly
I'm not alone
It ain't just me
I'm like a player on the team
I'm part of the gang...
A member of the club
Player on our team
Part of the gang
Welcome to the club
Oo ... let's get a club
I like the big-ass rock
Naw, one good swing and
I'll clean his clock forever
Let gravity do the work!
It's a man's way to die, Mikey.
Malcolm!
I got friends
Oo...
I've got friends
Oo...
Friends who will
Love you like a maniac
And lead you like a lamb
To the railroad track
And tie you down
Or tickle your wrist
With a single-edge razor
Or buy you a beer with
A Draino chaser
Or dump you in the
River with a rock
A big-ass rock
Here's a nice one right over here
Can I give you a hand with that? It looks heavy.
No Dave
It's ain't heavy...he's my friend
Come on, group hug.

Its not acceptable for physicians to kill a patient, but I have no problem with letting those individuals kill themselves. I mean, I would try and talk them out of it, but y'know, if someone wants to die, let him die if he wants to. Having said that, I think it is morally wrong for that individual to put the agency of the act of suicidce upon another. Let these people kill themselves or die the old fashioned way, by nature's cruel and agonizing embrace.

In this thread discuss : if a terminally ill person decides that they wish to end their life, is it acceptable for others (physicians) to assist them?
Well this depends on the ill person himself, if he do need some help that's not a bad choice sometimes. But all this things should be under the control of law.
Yeah, sure, they want to die, let them do it how they please, the others consenting. Besides, humans are over-populated. Why not let those that want to go go? Otherwise it's just a prison.
This seems liek my kind of thread XD
I partially agree with Blitzen, I don't think the physicians to have to live with that on their sholders, but I think the big issue is with the people who can't kill themselves. I think if you want to die, do it yourself, but if you can't do it yourself, have someone help you do it yourself. Like, set something up but have teh patient push teh button, you know?

I agree with 105% of this.
I think Blitzen hit the nail on the head, except he seems a little too casual in the "meh" department if someone does decide to take their own life.
Assisted suicide is the antithesis of what a doctor should be doing. Many of the people who request assissted suicide are those who are deemed "terminally ill", but in today's society "terminally ill" people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc frequently surpass their life expectancy and have seen their pains reduced by medical breakthroughs or other changes in society.
For some reason this topic makes me thing of a great essay by Stephen Jay Gould, The Median Isn't the Message. Gould was a famous biologist for those not in the know. In 1982 he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and given eight months to live. Well, he decided that was a bunch of mularkey and went on to live for another twenty years, leading a very productive life.

The desire for death is often a bizarre emotional response for those with bleak outlooks. While we cannot prevent someone from commiting suicide (hard to punish the dead), we can definitely make it unacceptable for someone else to "assist". Suicide doesn't solve any issues, it just leaves even more complicated issues behind.

But not impossible! I can think of a few things, for starters...
Think of all the poor youth in Asia, people. Their lives might be considered bad and yet they sometimes live on!
That was a really bad pun. Sorry.

If a person wants to die and they are deemed terminally ill, let them. It might be hard on the family, but chances are that they've already been taxed enough by the illness. Scrooge would support it!
...that was a really bad joke, too, but that's actually how I feel!

author=kentona link=topic=2176.msg36794#msg36794 date=1223579633I've heard that that's the case in like England or something. Dunno if it's true though.
It would be amusing if the penalty for attempted suicide was death.
