So, some more characters to add to the ones you already have?

- A dude in his forties, drab and unassuming but with a warm and gentle manner. Self-deprecating and frustrated at his own shortcomings, of which he is convinced there are many. Sees where those teens are struggling, tries to help them in his own way. Does things, feels like he was inappropriate, apologizes, feels guilty for drawing attention to himself, feels as though he is selfish after all rather than selfless, and on and on. He fights hard to keep these feelings internal though, not wanting to bother other people with his own problems. Part of the circular pattern of behaviour is not wanting to reveal his neuroticism even though he feels he's made a particular mistake and is compelled to correct it. Dislikes arrogant and/or aggressive people.

Had a domineering (but caring, in his own strained way) father and a more passive, gentler mother. Father's brother became terminally ill and died slowly. Father did not cope and lost much of his aggressive confidence. Dude, as a helpless child, was disturbed by his uncle's illness but more so by the decay of his father.

- A woman in her fifties: assertive, stern, just. Impatient with endless arguments and situations that never reach a resolution. Urges people to make a decision, and be done with it, for better or worse - inaction is as much of a choice, anyway. Meek dude above frustrates her, but she sees his kindness and appreciates him, and will tell other people to shut up so he can be heard for a moment. Dresses in brown and black. Dark hair is rapidly going grey. Likes very spicy food.

Had a frustratingly indecisive older sister who was unable to make pragmatic decisions about their welfare when they were orphaned. The sister was old enough that she "should" have been able to (early-mid twenties or so). Even though this woman was considerably younger, she found it was far more efficient for her to make decisions for the both of them. She kept her older sister close out of fear she wouldn't be able to look after herself, though she sometimes tried to push her out of her comfort zone, but this usually made her feel guilty and controlling. Sister is now dead, from sudden illness.

- older boy (18 - 22ish), attracted to arrogant, angry and "complicated" girls. Tries to draw them in with aloofness and sarcasm. Not particularly good-looking, but has a striking enough face, if a bit severe. Pointed, thin nose, and a missing canine tooth from poor dental hygiene (possibly from parental neglect) in late childhood/adolescence. While he used to be visibly ashamed about his appearance, he learned to mask insecurity with coldness as a way of simultaneously distancing himself from certain types of people, and drawing other types in. His very last/current girlfriend's parents did/do not like him because of his thinly-veiled irreverence and smugness (which obvs attracts the girl who is at odds with her overbearing parents).

Parents are tumultuous people. On-off relationship all through the boy's life. Has spent time separately with each of them. Obvious that they were still possessive of the other, jealous, bitter, angry, etc. Whatever drew them together in spite of themselves was a mystery to the son, though he now wonders if it's because no one else would put up with either of them, so they really only have each other.
