CRINGE MOMENTS IN RPGS
Posts
I'd definitely give FF10's VA work as cringey. afaik the direction was to try and lip sync the VAs to already baked cutscenes timed to another language entirely. There's a world of difference between Yuna and Auron's VA when one has to awkwardly cram in y'knows and the other gives no shits since you can't see their lips at all.
I'd like to offer the entire first act of Neverwinter Nights 2 for being made up almost entirely of boring garbage filler and a creepy stalker elf. Also the ending featuring Rocks Fall Everybody Dies. Also WRPG romance scenes which may feature creepy stalker elf. In fact just put everything in NWN2 except for the Phoenix Wright bit down the drain.
e: I cringed at everything in the Mugen Souls Z video, bweh!

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

FF6: That moment when the world is practically destroyed, and strago starts worshiping Kefka when he thought his daughter was killed by Kefkas act. Was I the only one bothered by this?
His granddaughter, but also ff6 is a shitty snes game so it's not surprising that most of the world of ruin is Not Good.
ff6: the game that could have been good, if only it weren't limited to a tiny cartridge. :,(
demonlord5000
Shadow Hearts Covenent: Any scene between Joachim and his coach.
TAKE IT
edit: tungermanu's avatar reminded me that sombra's entire release is cringe-worthy. at least the movie was good.
(not an rpg but idc anymore)
I love Guild Wars 1, but it truly had some of the most cringy and awkward cutscenes in all of RPG history:
Persona Q is a full game of cringe. The characters are reduced to bobble heads whose only personality trait is a single aspect of their character in the actual games, but intensified to the extreme. Akihiko is obsessed with punching things and eating protein. You found a chest? Cue voice acting: "I hope there's protein in it!"
The game is still rated M for Mature.
"The Persona series makes it's first appearance on a Nintendo system!" Aaaand it's a cheesy spinoff crossover with Etrian Odyssey.
Don't get me wrong, it's an okay game, but the character personalities ruin it.

i loved the idea of etrian odyssey with visible models attacking and voice clips. i HATED the shitty treatment of the characters and how truly awful Teddie is. he's in every scene, perving on girls!
one of the few games i've sold without finishing. what a shitshow.
thankfully 7th dragon iii code vfd did what i wanted ;V

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

@Milennin: Other than the viking guy doing a silly voice, I don't see what's bad about that scene. Silly voices are a thing I do really hate in voice acting, but they're in almost every single fantasy and scifi game and show, so I'm not sure what makes this specifically bad.
Considering the mediocre graphics, I actually think it's directed/choreographed quite well. And the human voice acting is pretty good.
It definitely does remind me of a Warcraft 3 cut scene, but that can only be a good thing. I love that game's cut scenes.

A long otaku life makes one widely immune to the fanservice in games but it gets difficult when I forget a friend of mine may be unprepared for something like Senran Kagura: Bon Appetite. So to all the otaku out there, try to remember to be considerate of your non-otaku friends and allow them to gradually acclimatise. Try seeing if they take offence to stuff like seeing the Neptunia girls' panties when they jump before going right into beating a kunoichi in a cooking contest, blowing off all her clothes, covering her in whipped cream and chocolate sauce and putting her on a giant cake where you have full camera control. It may shock them.

"nappy time". so inane
The Laugh in X never bothered me, because it's obviously contextualized as being weird and forced...
Tidus & Yuna have always reminded me of dorky friends from high school experiencing their first mutual romance.
I liked Seymour as a villain. I didn't find him gratuitous.
More on topic:
Any time Cullen appears naked in DA:I. Just... any of those scenes. Personally, I felt his romance graduated into excruciating levels of cheese (the "good" version of his romance, anyway). In a mildly entertaining way, though, much like everything else cheesy about DA:I. Uhh of which there is quite a lot.
The viera village in FFXII induced more of an eye-roll than a cringe, but it's still stupid.
The massage mini-game in FFX-2. Why.
Part of me LIVES for these sorts of moments in games, though (not so much the creepy fanservice). Kind of like bad-taste masochism. Those OP videos are incredible. Except the KH one. I hate you Hexatona.
Cullen might be worse in memory than in reality. I think there were only two scenes, and one was independent of a romance with him. Well, I cringed all the same.

The issue with the card game scene is that it was really stilted and not as polished as the other cutscenes in the game. It could have been really funny, but it was just awkward. Also just needed more Cullen dick. It's a similar issue to why Star Ocean is even worse than its the sum of its shitty voice acting -- since DA2, they got really good at using the camera. (Star Ocean has never learned what a camera is.) The DA2 scene with Flemeth on the cliff immediately comes to mind. DA:I continues this, using the camera to excellent effect... except in a few scenes that are incredible awkward, like the card game scene.
the massage mini-game in ffx-2 is an essential part of the game
edit: that link has some medium DA:I spoilers but it's not gonna ruin the ending or anything

No mention of Final Fantasy VIII's Orphanage scene yet?
Really everything after the end of disc 2 in that game is pretty cringe-worthy.

Well, yeah, I would be happier if there actually was dick in the game to balance out weird inquisitor boobs?
All scenes with Flemeth ever are great
I think DA:I occasionally suffers from that uncanny valley thing, where the characters move really awkwardly, or their faces are TOO detailed (although I do like the blemishes).

FFVIII is kind of an awkward game. I feel more ambivalent about it than maybe any of the other FF games I've completed.
Headmaster Cid is sort of the complete opposite of the zany nonsense that's been mentioned so far - he's dull, plain, meek - but I've never liked him. He is just such an uncharismatic man. Possibly the point of his character, thinking back on it... he wasn't cut out for leadership so forced it onto Squall? But ehh
So I suppose his romance reveal with Matron was a bit uncomfortable.

I think the number one thing I have learned from this thread is that one person's cringe is another person's raison d'etre.
Also, Dragnfly, is there a video of this ninja clothes whipped cream chocolate sauce encounter?

The huge difference between the high detail of the models and the low detail of the animations is one of the things that always kept me from a lot of the newer wRPGs. You don't get the uncanny valley effect when the characters look toon or anime.
I've been trying to remember a time when a parent or something walked in on me when I was at a weird or embarrassing part of a game but I'm having a tough time. By the time games commonly got voice acting in them I was already living away from family, safe for a tiny handful of them. The only time I lived with a girlfriend, she was far more attuned to perverted content than I was.
Maybe the audio-only sex scene in 7th Guest, but I don't think my mom ever heard that.
And cringe-worthy bad voice acting and script was washed out of my system from old anime dubs and in the case of stuff like Castle Shikigami 2 I spent the time laughing instead of cringing.
EDIT: Hexatona, pretty much any LP on Youtube should have it.
