[FUN] WORLDBUILDING 101: BUILDING TYCHO
Posts
The idea of this topic is to do some collaborative world-building. The world is called Tycho. What you do is type an entry into the Encycatlas of Tycho, like the following, and then highlight a bunch of terms that other people can choose to build thier entry off of. We should not take this too seriously but still try to keep Tycho as a cohesive and relatively constant world, so that the articles will reference each other and we will develop a fairly deep world/history/geography/ecology/whatever for Tycho. I've done this on a couple other forums and its usually pretty fun, and people get the chance to be creative, so let's give it a try. It is usually more interesting if you do articles that surround the most important topics rather than the most important topics themselves. Lets try not to contradict or dispute each other's articles. Be as detailed as you think nescessary and be creative!
So
THE RULES:
1. Select a italicized term from a previous article.
2. Write an article for it. Try and include other terms and keep in mind what has been said already, so we don't have contradictions or incoherencies.
3. Include at least one new italicized term for someone else to write an article about.
4. Keep in ming this is WORLD BUILDING and not MYTH WRITING. Note the difference. If you decide to write an article, remember we are building a world, places, cultures, economies, creatures, peoples first and not theogonies or ephemerals. Religions, folklore and myths have thier place in Tycho, but should be clearly indicated as such.
5. As the OP, I'd like to reserve the say to exclude, retcon, or request rewrites of topics or terms. If they don't follow the rules, conflict with another article, or we have multiple submissions, in an effort to keep things contigous.
Craze was awesome enough to actually compose for us a hypertext version of the Encycatlas of Tycho.
Here are two entries for you to start with:
The Brehaig
The Brehaig is a region of dense forest and foothills to the south of Mount Altyra. Its primary resources are timber, fruit, high numbers of fob support extensive hunting and trapping for thier fur. The area is rich in mineral wealth and was known to support firium mines in the days of the Old Empire.

Based on the large article I have written on the Old Empire and the Grand Rediscovery, here is a general timeline...
700 years before D.C.
Invention of writing, Old Empire (Rocci Empire) rules over vast areas of Tycho
500 Y.B.D.C.
Emperor Tykran of the Old Empire, who seemes to have lived a supernatually long life, dies. Empire descends into chaos.
350 Y.B.D.C.
Old Empire collapses, social turmoil, plague, reversion to near-primitivism
100 Y.B.D.C.
Kingdoms of the Old Empire reemerge in the east (Embria, Agar, Rochemont...)
0 D.C.
The Grand Rediscovery
(Embria rediscovers the west, Embria's "rescue" of Altyria/Altyrians from the Vach, push the Vach westward to recapture the lost provinces of the Old Empire)
435-441 D.C
Lariat's War
(western natives of the Vach Confedereacy under Kornrike and Lariat attack Embrian colonial provinces)
450 D.C.
Present Day...? (we can always move present day forward if we want to explore what would happen)

Battle of the Brehaig
During Lariat's War (435 to 441 D.C.), it was the site of a fierce battle between the established Embrian colonists and the increasingly powerful Vach Confederacy. The Embrians under General Pallas March were routed and forced to withdraw coastward to the Breese River, where the war proceeded to a stalemate.

Lariat's War
- A great war that was advocated by Master Lariat and the prophet Kornrike of the Vach Confederacy, this war was mainly fought to retain the holy crown from King Tykran of the Old Empire which had been conquered by the new Kingdom of Embria. Kornrike would later govern this war along side Sezer Lariat. The war would lead to the Vach Confederacy making a foothold of power which would allow them to survive. It was in Lariat's War which in great warriors such as General Pallas March, and great strategists and minds such as Kornrike. Sezer Lariat came to be known as a great military leader and such a small force that would later come to a stalemate with the Kingdom of Embria's huge army.
I might mention that every article must reference something from an article before it, if it wasn't clear. Loner articles won't count.
EDIT: I don't think you get the point of this, you are supposed to build off of what has already been said not just make shit up and tack it on. If we all do that the thing won't make any sense.

I did Lariat's War which was a term, was mine ok?
Yes, yours was perfect. Lets not spam up the topic though.
General Pallas March (b.402-d.449 D.C.)
General Pallas March was born in Verchess in South Embria to an aristocratic family, he excelled in study of economics, military tactics, and musketry through military school. He made his name during the Rebellion of the Foss where he earned a reputation for having an unshakeable calm while under seige at Arda. He was then dispatched across the ocean and served second in command to Marshall Verho in the Embrian Colonial Army before and during Lariat's War. At war's end he sailed back home and died of injuries arising from a fob-riding accident while training military cadets. He is buried in Rychas Mound next to the empty Tomb of Princess Larivee.

Firum
A subterranean creature of strange properties; during its larval stage it consumes darkness in the depths of the earth, but upon reaching maturity it transforms into a foggy crystal and enters permanent stasis. It then proceeds to consume light instead of darkness, multiplying what it consumes until it melts itself from the inside. Grouping vast quantities of firum in one place tends to cancel out this unfortunate effect, as the crystals tend to absorb light from each other and therefore remain stable. Those who worked with firum often wore blindfolds to prevent themselves from becoming fatally dazzled. Those who did not wear blindfolds were, more often than not, blind. Many of these people were children, as they were considered to be the only ones pure enough to touch the stuff. A number of them were blinded by their parents for this very purpose.
Despite its obvious potential as a weapon of war, the Old Kingdom instead used firum to pave the roofs of the rich and famous and the roads with so-called "holy" light. There is very little left nowadays.

Old Empire
The legendary realm of King Tykran from which the Holy Crown descended. Founded at the gates of Muspelheim and the Beginning of History by Avia, it was to keep an eternal vigil against Wyrn's malice and miasma. However, one night in ages past, Wyrn's foul mist issued forth from the Gate, and the next morning, the vast Old Empire had vanished into thin air: buildings, homes, people, everything.

The Gate
A legendary gate that had been said to lead the Abyss. In legend it was stated that during the mythical War of the Clans the clans that it was constructed to summon the "Shadow Goddess" from her sleep. The Gate was never found and is believed to be a place of fiction, though many people have tried to find this legendary place, most of them have failed. It is however rumored to reside in Cavern of Dreams where it lies in it's lowest floor protected by the ancient guardian Halprog.

The Abyss
In common mythology and religious teachings it is believed to be the place where the evil and unrighteous are sent after judgement. It is said to be ruled by Mastula, King of the Shadows, a horrible demon whose eyes are as 'dark as a thousand sorrows'. Its image as a place of debauchery and sadistic pleasures became widespread due to the Cellian Chronicles, written by the famous poet and author Minthet Haria.
Its counterpart is Luthiua, the heavenly kingdom where only the truly good and righteous rejoice in the Afterlife.
Fob
Large lumbering beasts of the bovine family that live in the forests of Brehaig. They are hunted for their hides which are very thick and dark purple in colour. This is believed to be because of their prediliction towards the Tov berries, grown only in that region. Usually a herd animal, lone bulls often visit the Veriag plains during the early spring to gorge themselves on said berries.

It's 1am for me, so if it don't make sense... that's my excuse.

Veriag
Veriag is a city in the southern extreme of the Embrian territory of Xeitas, on the edge of the Great Market Road which leads from the capital of the empire to Ferien.
Veriag is also the name of the plains that surround it.
It is one of the largest cities in that territory at over 100,000 inhabitants. It has an agricultural economy based principally in cattle ranching and raising crops. The city is also a regional commercial center, serving approximately 12 municipalities. The city had its origin as a crossroads, and has always maintained its character as a place that draws entrepreneurs from other regions. Major expansion of industry in the area, combined with the growth of tobacco plantations, has adversely impacted small-scale agriculture in the surrounding rural areas, resulting in declining population in those rural areas. Veriag also has a busy commercial district and the economy has devoleped a lot lately thanks to the migration of the population from all the surrounding towns.
It has been said that since ancient times, the Embrian kings always demanded the finest tobacco from the farmers of Veriag, as such, a yearly festival of tobacco is held to determine which plantation had the best crop that year. It is also considered a strategic location, and great measures have always been taken to protect it from other empires.

The Great Market Road
The Great Market Road is the primary sea and overland trade route between the Embrian homeland and the overseas colonies across the ocean. It begins in the capital and moves through Verchess and then westward to Castle Stormont, where merchants working under the aegis of the Embrian Colonial Corperation then transport goods and people across the ocean to the colonies. Many men used to make thier fortunes as oceanic traders, like magnate Isaac Barss and voothing tycoon Camb Welloy, who owned practically all coastal voothing camps south of the equator.
After arriving in Allox, the road then heads north-west through the Brehaig and into Xeitas and then through the Veriag plains, then towards the deepest inland city of Veriag. Because of the Great Market Road, Veriag became a trading center, moving goods into and out of the Vach Confederacy to the south and west.
For a breif period during and after Lariat's War, a sharp decline in trade emptied newly settled towns and villages along the trade route, people flocking to nearby metropoles for work.
Over the past hundred years, the northern pack-ice has descended into the oceanic road, due to the rapidly cooling global temeratures. This has severerly limited trade along the Great Market Road.

Unrelated post, this is getting to be BADASS quick. Nice job, Blitz.
Veriag Chronicles
Veriag Chronicles is a weekly newssheet produced in Veriag. It mainly deals in local gossip and is a huge hit amongst people in the upper class as well as people in the lower classes that feel like they want to keep up.
The Veriag Chronicles (Commonly also called Vercro, sometimes mockingly but also from the readership. The name is a play on the publication Vermo which is a completely different scholarly publication that comes from Verchess University) is managed by the siblings Johanna and Kieron Nuerg. The two are lower aristochrats, originally with little standing but with enough money to start the publications. Over the years the two have gained a substantial amount of both enemies and allies. Johanna is the more reserved of the two and rarely appears in public while Kieron has taken the role of playboy and the public face of the newssheet.
One of the great sponsors of the Veriag Chronicles is the art gallery Hottentot Gallery on Scaffolder's Street, which hasn't actually been present on Scaffolder's Street in many years but instead is located at the Miner's Road. The sponsorhsip originally sparked great controversy in Veriag and is said to be a reason for the Noble's Shuffle where many noblemen and -women moved around in Veriag. Much to the readership's delight.
The Brehaig Rangers
The Brehaig Rangers are a small and very secretive order residing in the forest of the Brehaig. They act as protectors of the forest though what they actually do is anyone's guess. During the Battle of the Brehaig it is said that the rangers supported different sides at different times.
Legends of the rangers tell of Iljana Kuo a great master of the order that was possibly a master sorcerer or a personification of a god. It is from here that most of the ranger legends come though texts imply that the order is much older than Kuo and that he was by no means the leader of the order at the time.
It is unknown whether or not the order still exist today but people around the Brehaig tend to explain most strange phenomenons on the rangers. And there is no denying that hunters hopelessly lost have suddenly found their way out and that other experienced hunters have lots their group never to be found again.
The scroll Altür found in the monastery of Altyraborgen is the oldest written mention of the rangers. Although scholars debate whether or not the text actually refers to the Brehaig Rangers.
When the mountains sunk into the mouth of Prehg.
The caves of Altür opened their mouths.
And men of wildur came.
To seal the mouth and keep it shut.
Prehg claimed some to itself.
Most scholars assume that Prehg means the Brehaig and that the story is an origin story of some sort. The rest of the scroll deal with the early history of Altyra.
Edit: This is so fun I'll make another one, let's do something actually mentioned... Goddamn what is present day?
Minthet Haria (b. 380(?) - d. 433 D.C.)
Minthet Haria was born in the small village of Haria. Born into a poor family but a child with dreams and aspirations he quickly moved away from Haria, never mentioning the village except adopting his last name the same as the village. LIttle else is known about the early days of Minthet but he appeared in Verchess in his late teens, quickly creating a reputation in the shadier areas of Verchess. It is said that he was mugged and left to bleed in an alley when a stranger made him an offer in exchange for his soul. There are many takes on the story and what actually happened is unknown. Minthet was always very quiet about his past, always saying that "It is the now that is important."
What is known however (and something that is explored in 95% of the biography "Minthet - Sin and Retribution" by famed biographer Hugo Lufitte) is that Minthet became inspired by his near-death experienced and begun his writing earnest. Previously he had tried his hands at poetry but in the collection "Secrets from Minthet" where poems from Minthet's life previous to his experience were published it can clearly be seen a huge difference in quality.
Minthet's production is a long one and also very varied. In the early years he found fame with the Cellian Chronicles that spawned much controversy as well as a new cultural movement of copycats and similarily themed texts. Minthet wrote a number of sequels and spinoffs to the Cellian Chronicles and Minthet became a rich man quickly.
He also wrote numerous poetry collections as well as some exclusives to aristochracy, some of which has never been read in public and are highly sought after. Some of his early collections include: The Eyes of The Abyss, Confessions of the Succubus, Halprog's Tongue.
Minthet became a huge public figure with thousands of fanatic and admiring fans but countered the popularity in the middle of his career by making parodies of his own work where the most famous one is Matsula vs Harry the Shoemaker. The newfound irony was again controversial and alienated countless of fans who preferred the older material but it also amused lots of fans who liked the new take on something that had become such a huge culture and following.
In 430 D.C. Minthet did his most controversial work and announcement which came to hunt him the rest of his life where he publicly ridiculed the prophet Kornrike, which made Mithet the enemy of many influential people. He managed to release a number of his writing until the publications came to a sudden halt in 431 whith the release of "The Apologetic Beggar", a confusing work which left much of the public scratching their heads. Minthet retired from public life after an assassination attempt in late 431 and hid in a monastery until his death in 433.
Minthet and the monastery he hid in was destroyed thoroughly in 433 and there were no survivors. A week before a supply caravan had gone through the monastery and found nothing strange. The next time someone visited the monastery only ruins were left.
Edit2: This was probably a bit long. I'll understand if you don't want to read it. Most of it is useless details anyway.

Tov berries
These violet-coloured berries grow in abundance across the vast plains of Veriag mainly on round bushes. It is found to be poisonous but many wonder how the fob manage to survive it's harmful effects while humans die from spontamach within a day of consuming these berries.

Spontamach
A grotesque stomach condition that occurs when a living being consumes the seeds of a Tov berry or its lesser-known cousins. Upon ingestion, the seed absorbs certain fluids present in the stomach and proceeds to rapidly increase in weight until it literally falls through the digestive system, rupturing organs and swiftly granting the victim a rather painful death. Some have attempted to manually remove seeds from Tov berries before eating to avoid this unfortunate effect, but as the seeds are plentiful and difficult to see this method is not advised. The native fobbads ("pigmen") who wander the plains have learned to deal with spontamach by crushing Tov berries into a purple juice, running the juice through filters multiple times, boiling it and then inhaling the vapors, causing strange gastronomic sensations. They also use Tov berry bushes as lures while hunting fobs for their hides, which they often sell in markets, and their meat, which is (to put it mildly) an acquired taste.
Some have suggested that the stomach of the fob is strong enough to digest Tov berry seeds before spontamach occurs. For this reason, fob stomachs are often sold in the markets of Veriag as a cure for stomachaches and sexual ineptitude.

Spontamach
Spontamach, or Rotflesh, as it is commonly known, is a disease usually contracted by humans foolish or suicidal enough to eat Tov Berries. Once infected, the victim lasts usually no longer than a day, although longer periods of agonizing suffering have been reported and recorded throughout history (Notably the death of Marquis D'Avola who was given wine made from Tov Berries by his enemies).
The infection begins upon ingestion, which may be severe, minor, or even non-apparent at first. Patients usually complain of intense pain that may seem in excess given the fact that nothing happens right away to the outward appearance
of the victim. With progression of the disease, tissue becomes swollen, often within hours. Diarrhea and vomiting are common symptoms as well. Inflammation does not show signs right away if the poison is deep within the tissue. If they are not deep, signs of inflammation such as redness and swollen or hot skin show very quickly. Skin color may progress to violet and blisters may form, with subsequent dying of the outer layer of skin. Patients with Spontamach typically have a fever and appear very ill. Mortality rates have been noted as high as 96 percent. Only one recorded case of survival exists, the case of Tomath Pfefferdern, a farmer who claims to know of a cure.
The first known case of Spontamach is recorded in A History of Embria and is described in detail in the Battle of Xeitas, where many men fell to arrows tipped with Tov Berry paste.

Gah. I was afraid something like this might happen! Blitzen?
(20 second difference. What were the odds we BOTH happened to be writing our entry at the same time?)
The entries don't necessarily contradict each other, though. One could say mine describes what happens to HUMANS. Mine also gives a "what happens on the outside" whereas Orochi's describes a stomach condition. Judges?

Halprog
A gigantic, ancient amphibian believed to be guarding The Gate in the nethermost floor of the Cavern of Dreams. It's hard, scaly skin makes it impenetrable to most weapons. It is also said to be a playful creature, often making others fall into a deep slumber (coma-like) only to wake up tired and exhausted from another one of it's tricks.
Most of this information has come from a single bottled message thought to be sent from the Phlegmatic Pond in which Halprog resides. The letter was signed by none other than Mastula, King of the Shadows. Although some scholars argue that this is a forged letter as there's no way to trace it's source, many others point to this as a warning of what lies below for those eager to reach The Gate.
